# Chapter 18: Starry Night Schemes

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 18 of "When the truth unravels read online" — a chapter full of glittering gowns, hidden agendas, hacked voting apps, and the kind of high school secrets that can destroy a reputation before the last slow song even plays. So get comfortable, because tonight prom is anything but simple.

There is something about the night of a dance that turns a high school gym into a kingdom — and Jenna Sinclair was, without a doubt, the queen of details. Every strand of warm white Edison bulbs draped across the ceiling, every balloon that made the ugly brick walls disappear, every cucumber-lime punch flavor chosen precisely because it was too hard to spike and too pale to stain. She had planned every second of Starry Night prom. The lighting sequence. The playlist restrictions. The ban on unironically ironic songs. Even the DJ had written back to her: *“I like your style, kid.”*

So when her phone buzzed with a demanding text from Hannah Larson — *WHERE ARE U??? We have a problem. Meet in the east girls room.* — Jenna should have felt her blood boil. Instead, she felt an almost dangerous wave of giggles rising in her chest. She had a pretty good idea why Hannah was upset, and it had nothing to do with the light check.

Jenna had been working school dances since her sister Holly dragged her into student council freshman year. She loved every part of it, despite the way her friends couldn’t understand why anyone would do more than the bare minimum. Student council was full of people who high-fived over under-budget projects and took criticism of assemblies personally — people like her, who saw nothing wrong with wanting perfection. Sure, there were Josh Bowmans of the world — résumé-sniffing opportunists who ran for class president just for college applications. But Jenna had learned how to handle them. Let them take the credit. She took the control.

Hannah Larson was a different story. The junior class president was a brat — a tremendous one, actually. Hannah had suggested hiking prom ticket prices twenty dollars to subsidize *next year’s* prom, and when Jenna pointed out why that was ridiculous, Hannah just stared at her blankly. But tonight wasn’t really about Hannah. Jenna knew exactly what she’d done, and strangely, she didn’t regret it.

She took her time wandering toward the east wing bathroom, letting the whisper of her dress against the tile and the soft click of her heels make the shadowy school feel almost regal. For a moment, she let herself love this building, this institution — all the learning that made her pulse pound in ways a tennis victory never could. She had worked too hard and too long for it all to be ruined by a bratty junior.

When she pushed open the bathroom door, Hannah and Sings Praises were waiting like two cats rehearsing a pounce. Jenna almost laughed at their faces.

“What’s up, ladies?” she sang, checking her reflection in the mirror. Her hair was still perfect. Thanks, Rosie.

“We have a problem,” Hannah announced.

Jenna furrowed her brow, milking total innocence. “Oh?”

“The prom queen results are … off.”

They were off, of course. Jenna had made sure of that. But no one was supposed to see those results before Josh opened the envelope. Hannah and Sings Praises exchanged a glance, caught. Jenna kept her face perfectly naive while peeking at the mirror.

“Irregardless,” Sings Praises began.

“Regardless,” Jenna corrected.

Sings Praises pursed her lips as a couple of sophomores wandered in. Regardless — she felt certain there was a mistake. Elin Angstrom had apparently been elected prom queen.

Jenna smiled. “Well, that’s nice!”

Hannah curled her lip. She wasn’t buying it. “Give it up, Jenna. Elin is your best friend and there’s no way she won. You did something, and I’m going to prove it.”

“A computer program tallies the voting results,” Jenna replied with studied patience.

“No one is going to believe that a coke whore like Elin got the most votes,” Hannah snapped.

Jenna’s cheeks burned. Her studied patience cracked. “Well, if the computer says she won, she won. If you want to cause a big scene, be my guest.”

Of course Elin hadn’t actually won. Jenna had gotten more votes herself. But high school democracy had never impressed her. Fisher Reese had already been Homecoming Queen — why did she need this title, too? Elin deserved something bright to remember from senior year, something besides hospital rooms and bad grades. So Jenna had re-coded the prom royalty voting app under the elegant rule: if no candidate won a majority, any candidate with less than ten percent of the vote would register as a vote for Elin. Sings Praises had dropped computer science after two days. Hannah had followed directions her entire life with pathological enthusiasm. Neither of them could prove anything.

Hannah crossed her arms, threatening to tell Josh they should skip the crowning entirely.

Jenna stepped closer, forcing them backward against the stalls. Her voice dropped low, dangerous. “Crowning is prom tradition, Hannah. You can’t forgo it. Besides, if you talk to Josh, he’s just going to ask me what to do. So what is the point?”

Hannah’s resolve began to crumble. Jenna saw the defeat flicker in her eyes. Then a lightning bolt of pain cracked through Jenna’s skull.

The sophomore at the sink was still washing her hands, listening to every word. Jenna’s face twitched.

“Could you finish washing your hands and turn that water the fuck off already?” she snapped, yanking bobby pins out of her hair. Fuck. This hairstyle must have been pulling too tight.

The sophomore jumped and fled, red-faced. A twinge of regret hit Jenna, but that only made her angrier. The girl was the eavesdropper, not her. “This is a desert and we are in the midst of unprecedented national drought,” she snapped after her. Then her brain derailed. Now she’d have to find this girl and apologize, and she didn’t even know her name. She imagined an announcement during Monday’s PSA: *Snoopy blond sophomore, please report to the office. Jenna Sinclair would like to say sorry and inform you about the dangers of desertification.* She choked back a giggle.

Hannah stared at her like she’d grown a second head. “What is wrong with you?”

Elin’s laugh bubbled up Jenna’s throat. She bit her lip hard. “Nothing.”

Hannah took a step closer and sniffed the air, eyes wide with glee. “Are you drunk, Jenna?”

Jenna pulled out a tube of gloss and reapplied carefully, steadying herself against the urge to laugh. Then she pursed her lips. “It’s prom, Hannah. Unbunch your panties.”

“You’re senior class vice president!”

“And you’re embarrassing yourself. Elin won. Get over it.”

Desperate, Hannah played her final card: “I’m going to tell Vice Principal Seelig.”

That threat used to terrify Jenna. A suspension would mean no state competition, no graduation with high honors, no senior party, no campaign internship before New Jersey, no China. Yesterday, this would have made nausea rise in her throat.

But as she looked at their reflections in the mirror, Jenna Sinclair realized something magnificent: *that was yesterday.*

Tonight, she was in no mood to be fucked with.

She raised one eyebrow and gave Hannah one last chance to save herself, knowing full well Hannah would refuse. “I’d be careful. Threats are beneath the dignity of the institution of prom.”

Hannah rolled her eyes. “I have never met anyone who cares as much as you do about everything. So take your pick, Jenna. Prom queen or suspension?”

Jenna shrugged, a half-smile quirking the side of her mouth. “It’s up to you. But if you get me suspended, I’ll tell everyone what you did with Josh after the pep rally cleanup last week. I bet Ben will be super impressed.”

Hannah jerked back as if slapped. Sings Praises’ judgey little ferret face dropped — suddenly registering her disapproval at Hannah, not Jenna.

Jenna ran her fingers through her hair one final time and retied her headband. “I don’t like you, Hannah, but here’s some advice,” she said, never taking her eyes from her own reflection. “If you want to fool around, fool around. Just pick a guy who’s more discreet than Josh Bowman. And don’t bait other girls with words like *whore*.”

She turned to leave before the crowning, practically hearing Hannah’s heart shatter into a million itty-bitty pieces. And Jenna couldn’t help but grin a little.

She had won. For Elin. For the idea that someone who had been through hell deserved one perfect, shining, completely fabricated moment of glory.

Ket West-Beauchamp April 18, 7:55 PM

Ket didn’t know what she expected prom to look like. Magical, maybe. But when the four of them stepped through the tulle-wrapped archway and into the gym, her first impression was mild disappointment.

Jenna ran off immediately — presumably to do Important Jenna Things — leaving Ket with Rosie, Elin, and the overwhelming urge to disappear. Rosie chewed her lip, clearly wishing she could vanish too, looking like a girl treating a dance as if she were about to join the Marines. Ket knew she should stay and ease Ro into this normal experience, but she had to act fast if she was going to convince Vaughn to keep his mouth shut.

“I’ll be right back!” she yelled over the music. “I left something in the car!”

Then she grabbed Elin, leaned close to her ear, and hissed, “Talk to Ben ASAP.”

She ran off, leaving Elin in Rosie’s ever-capable hands.

Elin, though, had been different all night. On the ride to the dance, she had chattered nonstop — joke after joke, fillings the air. Ket matched her energy, all too aware that if Elin was angry after their conversation at Fisher’s condo — where Ket had Ever-So-Delicately explained she had shared a Few-Too-Many details of Elin’s spring to Vaughn — she was hiding it spectacularly well. Jenna had laughed until she snorted. Even Rosie had cracked a smile or two from behind the wheel.

Ket had expected Elin to be hurt or furious. But that was the problem, wasn’t it? Elin was hyper-focused on her Ben Plan. And Ket was hyper-focused on the wreckage of her own choices. The sparkle of the gym, the stage lights, the thrumming bassline — none of it felt like magic. It felt like a bomb waiting for the clock to hit midnight.

She had to find Vaughn. She had to make him keep his promise. And if she was honest with herself? She had no idea what she would do if he wouldn’t.

The night was still young. The DJ was about to spin another track. Somewhere in the glow of the gym, a hacked app was about to crown a girl who didn’t win, a boy named Ben was about to hear a truth he wasn’t ready for, and Ket West-Beauchamp was about to discover how far a single whispered secret could travel.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter is absolutely delicious in the way it layers control and chaos. Watching Jenna manipulate prom results for such a personally meaningful reason is both thrilling and unsettling — you want to root for her, but the cracks in her composure are starting to show. The scene in the bathroom is tense, darkly funny, and oddly touching. And Ket’s narration provides a perfect shift in perspective, reminding us that Jenna’s shiny victory might not be the only secret that comes undone tonight. I loved every minute of this prom-night chaos.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.7 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Now that Elin is about to be crowned prom queen, Ben is bound to find out the truth about her past — but probably not in the way anyone expects. Ket still has to face Vaughn, and if he decides to spill what he knows, all hell will break loose in front of the entire school. I predict the crowning moment will be dramatically interrupted — and Jenna’s carefully constructed lie may come crashing down just as Elin starts to believe she finally deserves a happy ending.
