# Chapter 22: A Promenade of Secrets, Sushi Promises, and a Silent Torment

Hello, everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing today? I hope you’re ready, because tonight we are stepping into the sequins and shadows of Chapter 22 of *When the Truth Unravels*. The music is playing, the dresses are shining, and under all that glitter, some hearts are racing for very different reasons. Let’s dive in.

The gymnasium had been transformed into something almost magical. Soft lights, careful decorations, a dance floor full of people trying to be happy. But I couldn’t feel any of it. My jaw was tight, my teeth clenched, and I refused to give him the words he wanted.

Ben.

He was standing there like he belonged, like he hadn’t broken Elin weeks before their breakup. Like he hadn’t left her in pieces. And now, here she was, her eyes unable to leave him, her voice still defending him relentlessly. She’d told me herself—she didn’t even like having sex with him. She denied he’d pressured her, but I knew she was hiding something. Every kind word she threw at his character only sharpened my suspicion. The more she defended him, the guiltier he looked.

I had told him to get lost once, at Fisher’s party. Told him to leave Elin alone. I’d felt guilt about being so harsh. But seeing him now? Watching Elin practically vibrate with unresolved pain whenever he got near? Any shred of guilt evaporated. He was not the guy I’d thought he was. He never had been.

I looked around, scanning the dance floor for a rose gold mini dress with a poof of hot pink. Jenna and Ket were nowhere in sight. Seriously—why did Jenna insist we all come to this dance if she wasn’t even going to be around for it?

“If you’re not having fun,” I said suddenly, the words tumbling out before I could stop them, “we should ditch prom.”

Elin blinked, surprised. I pressed on. “Will gave me his credit card. We can call a cab and go do something else. Anything else.”

For a moment, hope flickered in her tired eyes. But then she said, “Maybe.” Except it wasn’t a real maybe. I knew her well enough by now. That was her soft, quiet way of saying *I don’t think so*. She glanced over at me and finally cracked the faintest smile. “So you really hate this, right?”

I opened my mouth. Closed it. “Kind of,” I admitted. “It’s just not my thing.” And inside, a small voice whispered, *I wish it were my thing.*

Elin’s smile grew a little more. “Jenna’s making you?”

I grinned. “Maybe.”

She shook her head, that hint of warmth returning. “Let’s get some pictures and spend at least an hour dancing,” she said. “Then we split. My dad gave me cash this week for a spa day, but we can go blow it on sushi instead. If Jen needs to stay until the end, we can come back for her. Deal?”

It felt as if an invisible weight had lifted off my entire body. “Deal,” I said, and I meant it.

Elin turned toward the doors. “I’m going to go find Ket,” she said. “She thinks I’m mad at her.”

And just like that, she slipped away through the crowd.

Across the room, under the glow of fairy lights and the sound of slow bass, Jenna Sinclair finally spotted the person she’d been looking for all night.

“Miles!”

He turned, and his smile lit up the entire space between them. He wore dress pants and a crisp white shirt tucked in, with the sleeves rolled up like he was already done with the formalities. His jacket and tie were gone—discarded somewhere in the chaos of the night. He looked like a black teenaged James Bond. *Oh my gosh,* Jenna thought. *They should totally make that movie.*

“Hey, J,” Miles called, walking toward her. “I’ve been looking for you—I just saw Elin, but I haven’t run into anyone else yet. Is everything going great up in the gym?”

But she couldn’t answer properly. She picked up her skirt and ran toward him, slipping just slightly on the polished floor before slamming into him. She couldn’t stop giggling. Everything felt warm and light and dizzy.

“It looks so pretty!” she said, grinning into his shoulder. At least, she hoped she was grinning. She could barely feel her cheeks. “I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Miles wrapped his arm around her waist and bent to whisper in her ear. “What is with you tonight?”

Jenna wrapped her arm around his neck and stared up at him. And in that moment, her giggling evaporated. It melted into a sense of calm and peace that had been eluding her all night. Damn, she loved Miles. She should have found him the second she walked through the doors. Around him, even at her most raw-nerve anxious, she could find herself again. He was a panacea—a cure for all difficulties.

But not for all secrets.

Not for the first time, she wished she had told him about Elin when it all happened. When the truth had been fresh and terrifying and begging to be shared. But she hadn’t. She’d kept it locked inside. And now it was too late.

Too late to undo the silence. Too late to pretend she hadn’t carried it this long. And as she stood in Miles’ arms, surrounded by music and laughter and glittering promises of a perfect night, Jenna wondered just how long she could keep pretending the truth wasn’t still unraveling right behind her.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

Oh, this chapter pulled at my heart in such a bittersweet way. I love the contrast between the two scenes—one filled with guarded pain and an escape plan whispered over dance music, the other overflowing with love and joy that still can’t quite bury the secrets underneath. Elin is breaking and I just want to hug her. The narrator’s protective rage is so real, and Jenna? Jenna is glowing with Miles, but that shadow hanging over her about Elin? It gave me chills. You can feel the storm gathering beneath the pretty surface of the prom. Beautifully tense, emotionally deep, and completely impossible to stop reading.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.7 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

The night is far from over, and I think Elin’s search for Ket is going to lead her somewhere unexpected—somewhere Ben is waiting, or worse, somewhere she isn’t ready to go emotionally. Meanwhile, Jenna’s bliss with Miles won’t last long. I predict the truth about what happened to Elin will slam back into the spotlight, maybe right in the middle of the dance floor, and Jenna’s secret will finally start cracking open—whether she’s ready or not. Someone is about to see too much.
