# Chapter 30: The Bitterest Word of All
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 30 of *"When the truth unravels read online"*. If you thought the night had already cracked wide open, hold onto your heart—because this chapter drags us out into the cold, empty streets after a girl who has vanished into thin air, while the friends she left behind begin to shatter like glass thrown against stone.

There are moments when you realize the whole world has shifted sideways, and your brilliant idea was never brilliant at all. Jenna knew that feeling as she sat on the rough sidewalk, pressing her palms so hard into her eyes that she saw stars. *What was the word that meant making a grave error in worldview?* She would have bet anything the Germans had a word for it—something long, brutal, and too precise for comfort. Because there she was, convinced she had solved the impossible, only to look up and see her best friend's mouth pressed into a thin, white line of pure fury.
“Look,” Jenna said, forcing her voice calm. “We aren’t going to find Elin if she doesn’t want to be found. What we need to do is give her a reason to come back.”
“What are you talking about?” Rosie asked, her voice rising high and shrill.
Jenna pressed her fingertips against her temples, trying to clear the fog from her brain. “Ben,” she said. “She wanted to talk to Ben all night. She never got to. So what we need to do is get Ben into a position where Elin can talk to him. We need to wingman Hannah right back away from him.”
She opened her eyes, expecting relief. She imagined Rosie and Ket staring at her with proud, hopeful expressions. *Thanks, Jenna. Way to solve our problems again, Jenna.*
Instead, Rosie looked like she wanted to burn something to the ground. All of Ket's attention was fixed on Rosie, not on Jenna.
“That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard,” Rosie said.
Inside Jenna’s head, the vocabulary flashcards started spinning—bitter, precise words for bitter, precise feelings. *Abjure: to reject or renounce. Acrimony: bitterness or discord.* She swallowed them all down.
“Look, Rosie,” Jenna said, her temper flaring underneath her calm. “I know you’re not a Ben fan, but Elin is. She wanted to talk to him all night. All we need to do is get him to call her, and she’ll answer.”
*Adumbrate: to sketch out in a vague way.*
“We don’t know that!” Rosie exploded. “And why would we want to expose our friend to that … that …”
*Anathema?*
“Asshole?” Ket supplied helpfully.
Jenna shot her a glare. Ket glanced away, muttering, “Just trying to help,” while staring at her phone screen as if it could rescue her.
Rosie planted her hands firmly on her hips. “Yes, asshole,” she said, biting off every syllable. “What we need to do is just find her and forget about him!”
Jenna’s voice rose to match the edge in the air. “Where do you suggest we start looking, Rosie? She’s not here. She left, and now we really have no idea where she is. We need to just do what we can—and that means getting Ben to find her.”
For one beat, the night went quiet. Then Ket blew out a long breath. “I agree with Jenna,” she said, as if she couldn’t quite believe the words were coming out of her mouth.
“Fine!” Rosie shouted. The word cut through the cold air like a blade. “I will go find Elin myself. You guys go back to the dance.”
Ket turned toward her, eyes bright with worry, but Rosie was already striding away down the dark sidewalk. “Rosie, we’re not just going back to the dance!” Ket called, rising up on her toes as though that would help her last words travel farther.
Jenna didn’t move. She slumped down onto the hard concrete. “Let her go,” she mumbled. “She’s not going to be happy unless she can be unhappy about something.”
---
*Rosie Winchester* *April 18, 10:45 PM*
Rosie stalked down the sidewalk, every step filled with fury—fury at Jenna, fury at Ket, and mostly fury at herself for being part of a night that had unraveled so badly. Behind her, she heard footsteps.
“Hey, where are you going?” FDR called.
She whirled around to face him. “We’ve found your car,” she said, her words like chips of ice. “You can go back to the dance.”
“And leave you wandering around here by yourself?” He shook his head. “No way.”
“I don’t need your help.”
But her heart betrayed her. *Yes, I do.*
FDR didn’t stop walking. “Maybe not, but I’m not leaving,” he said, matching her step for step.
She wrapped her arms around herself and turned away so he wouldn’t see the tears springing into her eyes. Even still, she could feel him standing just behind her in her blind spot. People streamed around them on the sidewalk like they were stones in a river, and not a single one cared that she had let her friends drag her into the biggest mess of her life.
“I just don’t know where she could have gone,” Rosie whispered, her voice cracking.
There was no reply.
For a second, she thought FDR had left her—stranded alone on a sidewalk in the middle of the night. But then she felt something warm settle around her shoulders. A suit jacket.
Rosie ducked her head, shame burning in her chest. Was it really possible? The only person who was ready, willing, and able to help her find Elin was some stranger she had been horribly rude to all night long?

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
What a chapter of raw emotions and divided loyalty! Watching the group tear itself apart under the pressure of Elin's disappearance felt absolutely heartbreaking. Rosie’s sharp anger is painful to read, especially because it comes from a place of love and fear. The shining highlight of this chapter, though, was that moment FDR placed his jacket over Rosie’s shoulders—after all of her rudeness, he chose to stay. It gives you chills.
I have to give this chapter a 4.8 out of 5 stars.
## Next Chapter Prediction
I predict Rosie will stop fighting FDR long enough to realize he knows something—or can help uncover something—about Elin’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, Jenna and Ket may actually reach Ben, only to discover that he is not the key to drawing Elin out, but the reason she ran even further away. Nothing in this story is ever simple, and the deeper they dig, the darker the truth could get.
