# Chapter 40: Seven Years, Secrets, and the Night That Refused to End
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 40 of "When the truth unravels read online." This chapter is one of those beautifully devastating ones—the kind that wraps you in a warm, painful hug and then yanks the floor right out from under you. We begin with two tired hearts trying to hold each other together, and we end with a frantic midnight warning that flips the whole night upside down. So buckle up, friend. We’re going in.
---
The night was no longer young, and neither were Jenna’s spirits. She sat there next to Teddy, the air between them thick with everything they had survived and everything they still didn’t know how to say. Jenna’s mind wandered to that stupid article she’d been reading before the world crashed in around her—the one about friendship. About how a friendship that lasts seven years is supposed to last forever. Seven years. That number should have been a comfort.
But then she’d finished reading, and her heart deflated. The findings only held true for people who met *after* high school. For people like them? For people who became friends in the fiery, messy trenches of adolescence, where everyone is still figuring out who they are? No guarantee.
“Seven years of friendship,” she murmured, more to herself than to Teddy. “It makes you think everything will be fine. That we’ll be fine. And then life reminds you that you’re all just walking around with hearts that can be broken by anyone, at any time.” She worried about Elin. She worried about Rosie. She even worried about the way all of them seemed to spin on separate axes lately, barely orbiting the same sun.
Teddy stayed quiet for a moment, letting the silence hold her. Then he cleared his throat. “Jen?”
“Yeah?”
He looked at her, and the softness in his eyes was enough to crack her open again. “I can’t promise you that we will be friends forever,” he said.
Jenna’s chin trembled. Of course it was the truth. But it still hurt to hear it out loud.
Then, like the Teddy she’d always loved, he finished: “But I promise you that I will stay your friend for at least seven years after graduation.”
Jenna burst out laughing. Tears spilled down her cheeks even as laughter bubbled out of her. “Thanks, Teddy,” she sniffled.
He threw one arm around her shoulders, and she sank into his side like a tired child finding shelter. “No problem,” he said gently.
She rested her head against his shoulder, shut her eyes, and let the world go quiet for a bit.

**April 19, 12:40 AM**
Jenna jerked awake with a gasp, clumsily wiping her mouth. Her eyes blinked open in the dim light, disoriented, her cheek pressed against something stiff and patterned. “Did I drool on you?” she asked, mortified.
“Nope,” Teddy said, his voice smug. “But you did snore.”
“I did not,” she said, indignant.
“Did so.”
She rubbed her cheek and felt the unmistakable imprint of Teddy’s houndstooth coat etched into her skin. Great. She’d be carrying a fashion statement on her face for the next hour. “How long was I out?”
Teddy shrugged and held up his phone. “Long enough for me to watch two episodes of *Golden Girls*.”
Jenna groaned. “You too?”
Teddy cracked a real smile. “It’s funny. You’d like it.”
She winced, rubbing her stiff neck. The night had taken its toll on her body, but more than that, her mind was a tangle of loose threads and unanswered questions. “Do you think you could take me home in a little bit?” she asked quietly. “I don’t want Miles to see me like this.”
“Of course. Bros before hos.”
A tired smile broke across Jenna’s face. “Are we bros or hos?”
“We’re bros,” he said without hesitation. “Miles is a ho.”
She laughed weakly, then took a breath. “Can I ask you a question, bro?”
“Shoot.”
Jenna looked at him carefully. She wanted to ask something she knew was dangerous, something that could crack the fragile peace they’d just built. But maybe the alcohol had loosened her tongue. Or maybe she just needed to know. *If it doesn’t go well, I’ll blame it on being drunk,* she told herself.
“Do you really love Rosie?” she asked softly. “Or do you love the *idea* of Rosie?”
Teddy froze. For a long moment, neither of them breathed. When he finally spoke, his voice was raw, uncertain. “I think . . . I did,” he said. “One of those two. I don’t know.”
Jenna nodded slowly. It wasn’t much of an answer, but she could hear the truth in it. Sometimes the truth didn’t make sense. Sometimes it was just a shattered pile of feelings that you couldn’t put back together no matter how hard you tried.
She inhaled, held the breath, and then slowly let it out. “Elin tried to kill herself,” she whispered.
The words hung in the air like a stone dropped into still water. Teddy’s arm tightened around her shoulders. “I . . . I thought that might have been it,” he said, his voice barely audible. “Hoped it wasn’t, but thought it was.”
“Why didn’t you ask?”
“I didn’t want to know.”
Jenna stared at her feet. The weight of everything she had carried tonight pressed down on her shoulders. “I’m sorry I told you what I did. About Ket,” she said. “Please don’t let it make things weird. I should have kept my mouth shut.”
Teddy opened his mouth, then closed it again. Something shifted in his face—a shadow of complicated thoughts. “The thing about that . . .”
Suddenly, Jenna’s phone rang, and they both jumped. The screen lit up with an unknown number. Teddy nodded toward it. “You should answer. What if it’s Elin?”
Jenna nodded, her heart already pounding, and swiped to answer. “This is Jenna,” she said.
The voice on the other end was unfamiliar and urgent—breatheless with alarm. “Jenna? You need to get over to my place STAT. Ket is about to make a huge mistake.”

**Ket West-Beauchamp — moments earlier**
The night air hit Ket’s lungs like a slap as she ran through the dark, desperate to escape the mess she had left behind. Nausea rose in her throat, but she swallowed it down. She didn’t know if Jenna and Teddy would follow her, and honestly, she didn’t expect them to. Not after the shitshow she’d caused. Not after all the truth she had unleashed.
And even if they did, she had no intention of turning back.
One thought ran through her brain—one thought and one thought only: *Find Vaughn. Fulfill my end of the bargain. Then go the hell home.*
The night had to end. She needed this night over with.
Ket scanned the crowd of kids streaming out of the gym doors, her eyes wild and hunting. Then she spotted someone she could use. “Sam!” she called, waving him over. He was grinning, one arm slung around his date’s waist. The girl wore the same stinkeye expression she’d had on back at the pre-party. Ket didn’t care.
“Are you going to Fisher’s afterparty?” Ket asked, trying to sound casual despite the desperation clawing in her chest.
“Yep,” Sam said cheerfully.
“Mind if I snag a ride?” Ket asked, falling into step with them as if she’d already been invited.
---
**April 19, 12:20 AM — Fisher’s condo**
The place was buzzing with bodies and loud music and champagne-fueled laughter. Everyone was celebrating something—anything—to wash away the strange and awful energy of prom night. But Ket moved through it like a ghost, her focus locked on one thing only.
She waited until Fisher was completely distracted, deep in conversation with Lauren Mendoza. Then she sidled up to Lauren, keeping her voice low and urgent. “I need to have access to one of your guest rooms for a half hour,” Ket said hurriedly. “Please. It’s important.”
Lauren glanced between Ket and Fisher, her eyes narrowing with a quiet, sharp suspicion. Her gaze lingered on Ket in a way that said *I don’t trust you*—but also said *I know trouble when I see it.*
The music thumped. People laughed. Somewhere in this beautiful, glittering room, Ket was standing on the edge of a cliff, and no one but her could see the fall.
But someone else could. Someone had already picked up the phone. Someone had already called Jenna.
Ket was about to make a huge mistake—and the night was far from over.

### Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
This chapter gutted me in the best way. The tenderness between Jenna and Teddy felt so real and so fragile—their little moment of laughter and promise in the middle of all that chaos was a beautiful reprieve. And then the phone call yanked the rug out from under us, followed by Ket’s chilling, desperate race toward an unknown disaster. I love how every POV shift raises the stakes and leaves me breathless. Ket is clearly not okay, and the “bargain” she mentions has me spinning with theories. This chapter was emotionally charged, perfectly paced, and brutally gripping.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars
### Next Chapter Prediction
I think the next chapter will show Jenna and Teddy racing to stop Ket just seconds too late—or maybe exactly on time to witness a terrible revelation. Whatever “bargain” Ket made with Vaughn is about to come crashing down, and I suspect she’ll be forced to confront the consequences of her choices in front of everyone. Elin’s fate, Rosie’s future, and the broken threads between this friend group are all about to unravel in the worst possible way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ket’s secret deal transforms her from villain to victim—or reveals something darker than any of them imagined.
