Sometimes, a perfect day can feel like the calm before something you can’t name yet.

Jenna’s grandmother was the kind of woman who could have popped straight out of a storybook. She wore hand-knit sweaters and gave hugs as freely as if they were candy. Her grandfather was never far behind, wearing his old Buckeyes sweatshirt with pride, cracking jokes he always conveniently "forgot" were about Jenna’s vegetarianism. And Elin? Elin loved borrowing Jenna’s grandparents for the day.

Upstairs, she lingered in the quiet of the bathroom, washing a cut on her finger. It was deeper than she had first thought. Unlike Cat, Elin had never been squeamish at the sight of blood. She simply studied it, wondering if it might need stitches, taking her own sweet, dawdling time to sort through the medicine cabinet for Neosporin. She wasn’t any good at food prep anyway, so why rush down to the kitchen?

But Cat’s voice rang up the stairs, pulling her from her thoughts. "Elin, hurry! We’re ready to go, and Mom’s baked brie is getting cold!"

"Coming!" Elin called, wrapping her stinging finger in a Band-Aid before racing back downstairs. Her parents and Cat were waiting, laden with pies and appetizers. How long had she actually been in the bathroom? It had felt like only a couple of minutes...

Perhaps that was the thing about Elin lately — time seemed slippery, and so did joy.

She had been looking forward to this day for weeks. School had begun to feel like a slog. It was as if the teachers had no idea that senior grades hardly counted for anything. Ben and she had been bickering constantly about how she just couldn’t summon interest in classes anymore. And her friends? They were scattering like startled birds. Cross-country had ended, and Rosie had been spending more time at her dad’s place, arriving at school each morning looking wrecked by the long drive. Teddy was practically glued to his guitar. Jenna was swallowed by student council obligations. And Ket was around, yes, but spending time alone with Ket always seemed to require more energy than Elin had left these days.

Thanksgiving, then, was her reprieve. A delicious, golden, much-needed break from the mundane, wearying weight of ordinary life.

The Angstroms lived only a few blocks from the Sinclairs, so the whole family walked through the crisp autumn air, balancing dishes and desserts. Jenna greeted them at the door with red hair pulled back in two braids, glasses perched on her nose, no makeup, looking like the hometown girl she never tried to pretend she wasn’t. "We just put on *Princess Bride*," she told Elin, taking a pie from Elin’s father, adding with delight, "Did you make the caramel apple one again?"

It was everything Elin had hoped for.

They watched movies in the basement beneath the hum of football from the living room. The turkey roasted to something golden and sacred. Jenna’s grandmother gushed over Elin’s blonde hair and heaped extra mashed potatoes onto her plate, even when Elin laughed and said she was full. Under the table, Lily, the family dog, snuggled between Elin’s and Jenna’s feet, waiting patiently for turkey scraps that she knew would come. Elin ate until she felt like she could burst.

After dinner, Jenna’s grandparents retired for a nap, and the real battles began: Monopoly became a war zone around the coffee table as Jenna and Elin’s father fought fiercely for control of the board, until the rest of the room eventually rebelled and demanded they call it quits.

But as the night stretched on, Elin felt something fraying underneath the laughter.

It made no sense. She was so happy today. So why did a creeping sense of disquiet keep snaking around her ribs?

She told herself it was nothing. Maybe it was just sugar. When it was time for dessert, she helped herself to a slice of butter rum cream and another of pumpkin, hoping a generous hit of sweetness might cure whatever this feeling was.

Jenna’s dad won the fight over the post-pie movie. Unfortunately, his choice was a subtitled kung-fu movie — and he had to pause it roughly every ten minutes to explain what on earth was going on. "So Biyu has saved Po’s life, which means she is now responsible for him," he announced with the solemn energy of an amateur film professor.

"Isn’t that Wookiees?" Jenna asked without looking up from her phone.

"No, if you save a Wookiee’s life, the Wookiee owes *you* a life debt," Jenna’s dad explained patiently. "But in kung-fu movies, if you save someone’s life, *you* are responsible for them forever, because you’ve changed their destiny."

Jenna’s mother raised a forkful of pumpkin pie and arched an eyebrow. "Not sure that’s an entirely accurate representation of Chinese culture."

"Probably not," Jenna’s dad said, shrugging as if accuracy was beside the point.

Elin’s dad chimed in, his Swedish accent slipping a little thicker after a couple of glasses of wine, "Heaven forbid Americans read subtitles."

Elin’s mother swatted his arm, and the room laughed. Cat, though, frowned into her dessert. "That doesn’t seem fair, though. Why would anyone save anyone if it meant they had to watch out for them for the rest of their lives?"

Elin leaned toward Jenna, a knowing grin tugging at her lips. "With great power comes great responsibility. *Really* great responsibility."

Jenna choked back a laugh. And Elin grinned too — but there it was again: that small, cold flicker in her chest, like a draft cutting through a warm house.

Even with all the warmth around her, Elin suddenly knew what the feeling meant.

Her stomach churned. Her mouth felt sticky and sweet in the worst way. She set her unfinished plate of pie on the floor next to the armchair, unable to force another bite.

Tomorrow, it would be back to regular life.

But there is something restless beneath the surface of this chapter, and it isn’t only Elin’s quiet ache.

The pages spin forward, pulling us from the amber lights of Thanksgiving into an entirely different kind of room — a condo party, in mid-April, at Fisher’s place. The date is April 18, 6:10 PM, and we are now sitting inside Jenna’s diary.

Not five minutes into the party, Ket had wandered off to flirt with whatever hot loser she was currently hooking up with. Rosie had planted herself on the couch like a statue, pointedly ignoring the entire celebration. And Elin? Elin had vanished into a private tour of the infamous condo with Fisher — leaving Jenna alone in the kitchen, hugging her own awkwardness like a shiver.

Jenna tried to be fair to herself. She loved her friends. Honestly, she did. But sometimes their thoughtlessness made her want to scream. She had come here tonight without Miles, all because Elin had wanted some "girls night" prom experience — and now Elin had ditched her anyway.

She realized she had been staring at the running kitchen tap without actually filling a glass. She shook herself. Her eyes landed on a tray of Jell-O shots, and before she could think better of it, she grabbed a red one and let it slide right down her throat.

Of course, that was the moment Vaughn decided to sharpen his tongue.

"Hey, check out Jenna," he said.

She looked over her shoulder. Vaughn Hollis and his cronies. Great.

Vaughn smirked. "Didn’t realize you had no gag reflex."

Jenna forced a smile, even though every muscle in her body wanted to slap that smug expression right off his face. For a glorious, dangerous second, she let herself imagine it — her palm cracking against his cheek, the impact rippling across his skin, the stupidly shocked look blooming in his eyes. A satisfying little fantasy.

But it was only a fantasy.

This chapter is a study of fractures hiding inside festive moments. While Elin savors a day that feels like shelter, something inside her already mourns its end. And while Jenna smiles at a party, her loneliness is sharp enough to cut. Two girls, two celebrations, two kinds of darkness waiting just past the edges of the room.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter is a quiet storm. I loved how peacefully it opens — that cushiony warmth of Thanksgiving, the familiar chaos of family and friends — only to let a thin, unsettling note creep in like a draft under a door. Elin’s growing sense of unease feels painfully human; it’s the ache of realizing that even perfect days cannot hold back the ordinary, complicated world forever. And Jenna’s diary entry cuts deeper than it seems at first glance: beneath her rueful humor and her fantasy of slapping Vaughn is a girl who feels abandoned by the people she loves most. This chapter doesn’t just slowly turn the knife — it places it precisely where you haven’t yet thought to look.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ — 4.7 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

The restlessness Elin feels seems like it’s pointing toward something much darker than ordinary routine. With Jenna’s April diary revealing how emotionally frayed this friend group has become — and how quickly Elin can abandon her promises — I predict the next chapter will show the fragile trust between these friends beginning to snap. Something is coming. Maybe someone will confess a secret. Maybe someone will go missing at a party, or a dangerous accusation will surface, forcing this group to close ranks — or to tear each other apart. After all, a truth that has been buried for so long cannot stay hidden forever.
