The dogs are huge!
They’re black and have white patches on their chests and the trainers who brought them are women and they say
the dogs’ names are Kami and Kamael. The dogs are both boys and are trained to guard our house.
One of the trainers says, We provide bedding. They’ll bring that in shortly. We also provide food for the first three
days, but if you want their services longer than that, then it’s on you. We’ve already trained them to acc ept the
three of you.
Acc ept? Daddo says.
Y ep. When we brought them in. It’s the first thing we did. All done with scent. Your wife gave us an article of
your clothing. Your daughter’s too. So there is absolutely no way either of them will attack any of you. At the
same time... if anybody else comes over, even a close friend of yours, you need to be aware that Kami and Kamael
have no reason to trust them.
And this is exactly what you want out of them. We’ll show you how to scent-train them in case you do have
someone coming by.
Where will they stay? Daddo asks. Are we supposed to play with them?
No play. Not like that. But like we talked about on the phone: you have a fenced-in backyard; let them out a few
times a day. Make sure to let
them out before you go to bed for the night so they can prowl the first floor alone.
We want them to guard the entire house, Mommy says.
The trainers look surprised.
Their job is to guard any way in, one of them says. There wouldn’t be a reason to think anyone had gotten in with
these two around.
And what about ghosts? Mommy asks.
I expect Daddo to say something when she says this, but he only waits for their answer like Mommy does.
What do you mean? One of the trainers asks.
What about something already in the house, is what I mean, Mommy says.
Nothing will get past them.
Kami or Kamael looks at me and I wave, and he looks back at the women who brought him.
No play.
The dogs aren’t trained to go upstairs in the homes we bring them to, one of the trainers says.
However, the other trainer says, if they hear a struggle, anywhere in the house, anywhere at all, they’ll come. Kami
and Kamael are without question two of the best dogs we have.
All right, Daddo says. Well, I’m glad they’re here.
I am too, I say.
The trainers look at me like they’re wondering if something else is going on. Something they aren’t used to.
That’s good, Bela, Daddo says. But give them their space. Let them do what they’re trained to do.
No treats, one of the trainers says. And absolutely no human food.
Kami and Kamael are working. They know this. Okay?
Okay, I say.
Mommy breathes de ep and looks to the cameras in the ceiling above us.
I hope we’ve done all we can, she says.
I’m sure you have, one of the trainers says. In fact, I don’t think we’ve ever seen a house as fortified as what
you’ve done to yours.
If I were you, the other says, I wouldn’t fear a thing.
