# Chapter 16: The Poison Garden Party

Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I continue to walk with you and review Chapter 16 of "The Housemaid" — and oh, what a chapter it is. Let me tell you, if you think the women at your neighborhood barbecue are catty, wait until you meet this PTA crew. It's a scorching afternoon of passive-aggressive comments, gluten obsession, and secrets that should never be whispered — but you know people always whisper anyway. So sit back, grab something cool to drink, and let's dive into this deliciously tense chapter together!

## The Backyard Battleground

Millie stands in the blazing sun, pressed into the corner of the Winchester backyard like furniture. Her face is flushed, sweat drips down her temples, and she's terrified she has pit stains. Before her sits the PTA meeting — four women who have turned an afternoon social into a battlefield of social status and judgment.

There's Jillianne (pronounced Jilly-anne, thank you very much), Patrice, Suzanne, and of course, the hostess herself — Nina Winchester. And Millie hates every single one of them. Not because they're terrible people (though, let's be honest, they kind of are), but because Nina has stationed her like a silent soldier, constantly at attention to fetch whatever these women need.

The only bright spot? The hors d'oeuvres. They're a success — and Nina has absolutely no idea that Andrew picked them up for Millie. A small secret that matters more than it probably should.

## Gluten-Free Complaints and Hidden Insults

" I'm just not happy with the field day menu," Suzanne says, tapping her pen against her chin — clearly taking this responsibility far too seriously. "I feel like there needs to be more than one gluten-free option."

Jillianne chimes in, "And even though there is a vegan option, it's not vegan *and* gluten-free. So what are people who are both vegan and gluten-free supposed to eat?"

Millie's internal response is dry as dust: *I don't know? Grass?*

She's never seen women more obsessed with gluten in her life. Every single hors d'oeuvre she brings out is interrogated about its gluten content, as if Millie would have any idea what gluten is anyway. And it is *sweltering* out here. Millie would give anything to be back inside under the air conditioner — or worse yet, to have a sip of that pink sparkling lemonade the women are sharing, laughing and chatting like they're on some luxurious vacation while she stands there baking like a casserole.

Then Patrice strikes with her high-class insult: "This blueberry goat's cheese flatbread should have been heated up. They're barely lukewarm."

Nina sighs with fake regret. "I know. I asked my maid to take care of it, but you know how it is. It is *so* hard to find good help."

Millie's mouth falls open. Nina never asked her to heat anything. And does she realize Millie is standing *right there*?

## The Cruelty of Polite Society

The women dive in, each one trying to outdo the other with complaints about the help.

"You just can't hire anyone good anymore," Jillianne says sympathetically. "The work ethic in this country is so horrible. You wonder why people like that can't find better jobs, right? It's laziness, pure and simple."

"Or else you get someone foreign," Suzanne adds. "And they barely speak the language. Like Enzo."

At least Patrice finds a silver lining: "At least he's nice to look at!"

They laugh together, gossipy and cruel, while Nina stays oddly silent. Millie notices her hesitation around Enzo — perhaps jealousy, perhaps something else entirely.

Millie feels her blood boiling. These women are bad-mouthing her *right to her face*, pretending she's invisible. She's worked her butt off for this job. She's never complained. She deserves better than this. Taking a breath, she clears her throat.

"Nina. Do you want me to heat up the hors d'oeuvres?"

The temperature drops ten degrees. Nina turns to face her, eyes flashing with something dangerous. "Millie," she says, her voice deceptively calm. "We're having a *conversation* here. Please don't interrupt. It's so rude."

"I — "

"Also," Nina cuts her off, "I'd thank you not to refer to me as Nina — I'm not your drinking buddy." She snickers at the other women, feeding off their attention. "It's *Mrs. Winchester*. Don't make me remind you again."

Millie stands there, completely flabbergasted. On the very first day, Nina told her to call her Nina. She's called her that for weeks — and now suddenly she's taking liberties? And the other women are looking at Nina like she's the queen of England for putting the help in her place.

It gets worse. Patrice launches into a story about how her cleaning woman had the *gall* to tell her about her dog dying. "I don't want to be mean," Patrice says, before being utterly mean, "but what do I care if Juanita's dog died?"

This is the world Nina lives in. A world where the help should be seen, not heard. Where feelings don't matter. Where a woman's worth is measured by her prenup and her roots.

## The Pregnancy Announcement That Wasn't

Then Nina changes the subject, popping another of the unacceptable hors d'oeuvres into her mouth — Millie's been counting, and Nina's eaten half the tray while the other women nibble like birds. "We definitely do need the help though. Especially when Andrew and I have another baby."

Gasps. Screams. The women nearly lose their minds. "Nina, are you pregnant?" Suzanne cries.

"I knew you were eating like five times as much as the rest of us for a reason!" Jillianne adds triumphantly — and earns a sharp look from Nina that Millie has to stifle a laugh at.

"I'm not pregnant *yet*," Nina clarifies. "But Andy and I are seeing this fertility specialist who is supposed to be *amazing*. Trust me, I'll have a baby by the end of the year."

For a moment, as Patrice mentions what a great dad Andrew is, Nina's eyes go a little moist. She clears her throat, suddenly overcome, and excuses herself to the house.

*Nina dashes into the house*, Millie thinks. *Should she follow? Maybe Nina expects her to come wipe her hands or flush the toilet or do some other demeaning task.*

But she stays put — and that's when the venom really starts to flow.

## The Whispered Secrets

As soon as Nina is out of earshot, the women burst into quiet laughter. "Oh my God!" Jillianne snickers. "That was so awkward! I can't believe I said that to her. I really thought she was pregnant! I mean, doesn't she look pregnant?"

"She is getting like a house," Patrice agrees viciously. "She seriously needs to hire a nutritionist and a personal trainer. And did anyone else notice her roots showing?"

Millie's skin goes cold. She noticed the roots too — a good centimeter of dark roots against Nina's perfect blond. But hearing these women talk about it like wolves circling prey makes her uncomfortable. This isn't gossip. This is savagery.

"Like, I would be embarrassed to walk around like that," Patrice continues. "How does she expect to keep that hottie husband of hers?"

"Especially since I heard they have an airtight prenup," Suzanne whispers, leaning in. "If they were to get a divorce, she'd get practically nothing. Not even child support, because you know he never adopted Cecelia."

*A prenup!* The words hit Millie like a physical blow. These women know things. They're speaking them to the open air, assuming the invisible maid won't understand or won't care. But Millie hears every word, and she's filing them away like evidence in an investigation she didn't know she was running.

Patrice gasps at the audacity. "What is wrong with Nina? Why would she sign something like that? She better do whatever she can to keep him happy."

"Well, I'm not going to be the one to tell her she needs to go on a diet!" Jillianne says quickly. "God, I don't want to send her back to that mental institution. You know Nina isn't all there."

## The Truth That Cuts Deep

Millie stifles a gasp.

*Mental institution.*

She'd hoped when those women at school hinted that Nina was crazy, it was just *suburban* crazy. A therapist, a few sedatives, nothing serious. But this? A psychiatric institution? A serious illness?

Suddenly, everything shifts. The wrong information. The mood swings. The strange behavior that Millie has been privately rolling her eyes at — it all clicks into place. Nina isn't just difficult. She's suffering. Millie feels a sharp jab of guilt for every time she's gotten frustrated with her boss. It isn't Nina's fault. Her brain is wired differently, and she's been struggling this whole time without anyone truly understanding.

But then Patrice drops her voice — only a few notches, not nearly enough — and says something that makes Millie's blood run cold.

"If I were Nina, the last thing I would do would be to hire a pretty, young maid to live in my house. She must be out of her mind with jealousy."

Millie looks away, trying to appear deaf, dumb, and blind. She's done everything she could to keep Nina from feeling jealous. She doesn't want Nina to know that she thinks Andrew is attractive. She doesn't want there to be even a whisper of a possibility that something could happen between the two of them.

Millie's thoughts are honest as she looks at her own heart: *Yes, if Andrew were single, she'd be interested. But he's not. And she's staying far away from that man.*

Nina has nothing to worry about.

Or so Millie tells herself. But in a house full of secrets, in this backyard full of poison and pretense — the truth has a way of finding cracks in the foundation.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Whew. This chapter was an absolute masterclass in social horror. Watching these women tear each other apart while presenting a unified front of friendship is *bone-chilling* — and the way the narrator reveals the truth about Nina's mental health through their venomous gossip adds so much depth to her character. Suddenly, all her erratic behavior makes sense, and you can't help but feel a pang of sympathy for her. Meanwhile, Millie is trapped in the middle, an invisible observer to a game she never wanted to play. The tension is building beautifully, and that final revelation about the prenup and the mental institution? *Chef's kiss.* This chapter is a slow burn leading to what's sure to be an explosive payoff.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Now that Millie knows Nina has been institutionalized before, the dynamics of the house are going to change. I predict she'll start paying much closer attention to Nina's behavior — and what she discovers won't be comfortable. Perhaps she'll find something in the house that offers clues about what really happened, or Nina's jealousy over Andrew may start showing in increasingly alarming ways. With the fertility treatment on the horizon and Andrew's kindness toward Millie, the powder keg is ready to ignite. I wouldn't be surprised if something happens very soon that forces Millie to choose between keeping her head down and following her instincts.
