Life in an old car is far from glamorous. When you live in a Nissan with everything you own stuffed into the trunk, you have to simplify. No dinner parties, no friendly gatherings, and definitely no comfortable beds. For Millie, the biggest daily struggle is simply finding a place to wash off the grime of another lonely day. It took her three days after losing her apartment—which came just three weeks after losing her job—to discover a rest stop with showers. It wasn't clean. It smelled faintly of human waste. There was barely any privacy. But to Millie, it was salvation. She almost cried with joy when she found it.
Now, sitting alone in the back seat, she does her best to enjoy lunch: a ham and American cheese sandwich with a dollop of mayonnaise. Nothing more than cheap white bread and cold cuts. Her whole world is a cooler of options, bags of chips, peanut butter crackers, Twinkies—endless unhealthy snacks that barely fill the hollow ache in her stomach. With every bite, she tries not to think about how utterly sick she is of sandwiches. And fails.
Then, her prepaid flip phone rings. You know the kind—used by criminals or people who've been trapped fifteen years in the past. Millie has to accept it. It's all she can afford.
"Wilhelmina Calloway?" a clipped, businesslike voice says.
She winces. Wilhelmina. A name chosen by relatives long gone, by parents she no longer speaks to. A name that doesn't feel like hers. She's always been Millie, plain and simple. But this woman on the phone feels far from friendly.
"Yes...?"
"This is Donna Stanton from Munch Burgers."
Ah, yes. The greasy fast-food joint that offered her a faint hope: flipping burgers, working the register, maybe crawling her way up to something better. Anything to earn enough to crawl out of that car. But Donna Stanton's voice isn't carrying good news.
"I just wanted to let you know that we have already filled the position at Munch Burgers. But we wish you luck with your job search."
And just like that, the last door slams shut. Millie's stomach churns painfully. She had read online that Munch Burgers hired people with records. Even someone like her had a chance. But now, another rejection. Another dead end. She thinks of Nina Winchester—the beautiful, wealthy woman who interviewed her a week ago. The house was a dream. The job was a miracle. But Nina never called. It's safe to say she didn't get that job either.
Desperate, Millie blurts out to the woman, "I'm just wondering if you might be able to hire me at any other location. I'm a really hard worker. I'm very reliable. I always..."
Silence. The woman has hung up.
Millie clutches her sandwich in one hand, the dead phone in the other. Her chest tightens. Hopeless. Utterly hopeless. Nobody wants to hire her. Every employer looks at her the same way—with suspicion, judgment, fear. But she doesn't care about judgment. All she wants is a fresh start. She would work to the bone. She would do anything, absolutely anything, to change her life.
She tries to cry quietly, but why even bother? No one is watching. No one cares. Her parents washed their hands of her more than a decade ago. She's been alone in this car, in this world, ever since.
And then, the phone rings again.
Startled, Millie wipes her eyes with the back of her hand and accepts the call. "Hello?" she croaks.
"Hi? Is this Millie?"
That voice. It sounds familiar, soft, elegant. Millie's heart leaps.
"Yes...?"
"This is Nina Winchester. You interviewed with me last week?"
Millie bites down hard on her lower lip. Nina? After a whole week of silence? She was so sure she'd been forgotten.
"Oh. Yes, of course."
"So if you're interested, we would be delighted to offer you the job."
The words crash over her like a wave of warm light, making her dizzy. We would be delighted to offer you the job. Is this real? Could it possibly be real? It was one thing for a fast-food place like Munch Burgers to consider hiring her—but Nina Winchester? A wealthy, beautiful woman inviting a stranger into her home? To live? To work by her side?
How did she not check her references? How did she not run a background check? Maybe she was just that busy. Maybe she trusted her gut. Maybe she saw something good in Millie, something clean and hopeful.
"Millie? Are you there?"
Millie realizes she's been completely silent, stunned beyond words. "Yes. I'm here."
"So are you interested in the position?"
"I am." She tries to keep the eager trembling out of her voice. "I definitely am. I would love to work for you."
"Work with me," Nina corrects gently.
Millie lets out a strangled laugh. "Right. Of course."
"So when can you start?"
"Um, when would you like me to start?"
"As soon as possible!" Nina's laugh is light, easy, the laugh of someone who has never had to worry about a roof over her head. "We have a ton of laundry that needs folding!"
Millie swallows. "How about tomorrow?"
"That would be wonderful! But don't you need time to get your stuff packed?"
Millie can't exactly admit that everything she owns is already in the trunk of her car. "I'm a fast packer," she says simply.
Nina laughs again, delighted. "I love your spirit, Millie. I can't wait for you to come work here."
As they exchange details about tomorrow—the address, the time, the expectations—Millie feels a strange, unbidden thought creeping into her mind. A thought she can't escape.
She wonders if Nina would feel the same way about her if she knew the truth. If she knew that Millie spent the last ten years of her life in prison.

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating
Wow. Just wow. This chapter pulls every emotional string in your heart. The raw loneliness of Millie's world—eating sad sandwiches in the back seat of a car, crying alone with no one to comfort her—is heartbreakingly vivid. You feel every ounce of her desperation when Munch Burgers rejects her. And then, in a single phone call, hope arrives in the voice of Nina Winchester. The tension is incredible: should we be excited for Millie, or terrified? There's something just slightly off beneath Nina's gracious voice, and Millie's final thought about prison hangs over everything like a dark cloud. This chapter is a masterclass in suspense and emotional depth.
