# Chapter 5: The Scent of Tension

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 5 of *The Housemaid* — a chapter that smells like roasted chicken, but simmers with something far more uneasy underneath. So grab a glass of something nice, settle in, and let’s step back into the Winchester household together.

The clock is ticking closer to dinner, and Millie is already busy in the kitchen. It’s almost seven o’clock, and the house is filled with the kind of warm, savory smell that makes even a rough day feel softer. She found chicken breast in the fridge, already marinated with a bag of instructions attached — these people don’t even have to think about their meals, she notices. Somebody out there does it for them. All she has to do is follow the printed directions and slide the dish into the oven like she’s following a science lab manual. And honestly? It works. The kitchen smells incredible.

But just as she’s stirring a rich sauce on the stove, the garage door slams with a heavy declaration: Andrew Winchester is home.

And oh. Oh, wow. Millie nearly does a double-take as he strolls into the kitchen, loosening his tie with one thumb, looking like he just stepped out of a magazine she isn’t supposed to read. She’d forgotten just how handsome he is. The kind of handsome that catches you off guard, even when you’ve seen it before.

He flashes her a grin — and somehow, that makes him even more striking. “Millie, right?”

“That’s right.”

He breathes in deeply, letting the warm aroma of dinner fill his lungs. “Wow. That smells incredible.”

Her cheeks flush. “Thank you.”

He glances around the kitchen, visibly impressed. “You got everything clean.”

“That’s my job.”

He chuckles at that — a low, easy laugh. “I suppose it is. Did you have a good first day?”

“I did.”

Only she doesn’t mention the peanut butter mess. Not a word. She definitely won’t tell him about nearly killing his daughter with a sticky, nutty — actually no, it’s better to keep that little disaster buried. She does suspect Nina might mention it later, and the thought makes her stomach twist. Hopefully he won’t hear about it. She doesn’t need her first day to end with a lecture about how close she came to committing culinary manslaughter.

So instead, she pivots gracefully. “You have a beautiful home.”

“Well, I have Nina to thank for that,” he says warmly. “She runs the household.”

And as if this conversation was somehow scripted, Nina glides into the kitchen wearing yet another white outfit. A different one from just a few hours ago. She looks perfect, immaculate, like she’s never had a single strand of hair out of place in her entire life.

But Millie noticed something earlier, while cleaning, didn’t she? She took a few minutes to glance at the photographs on the mantel. And in one image from years ago, Nina looked almost like a different person. Her hair wasn’t as blond, her makeup was lighter, her clothes more casual — and she was at least fifty pounds thinner. Hardly recognizable. But Andrew? He looked exactly the same. Time seems to have made him even more handsome, while Nina seems to carry a different kind of weight — the kind that hides beneath the surface.

Then Andrew’s face lights up the moment he sees his wife. “Nina. You look beautiful — as usual.”

He pulls her close and kisses her deeply. Nina melts into him, gripping his shoulders possessively, as if she’s claiming him in front of everyone. When they finally separate, she gazes up at him with shining eyes. “I missed you today.”

“I missed you more.”

“I missed *you* more.”

Oh, please. They’re going to go back and forth like that forever, aren’t they? Millie looks away, busying herself at the stove. She feels like an intruder in a scene that wasn’t meant to have an audience — too close, too awkward, too aware of how their love seems to exist in a bubble she doesn’t belong in.

Nina is the one who pulls away first. “So. Are you two getting to know each other?”

“Uh-huh,” Andrew says. “And whatever Millie is making smells incredible, doesn’t it?”

Millie glances over her shoulder. And there it is — that dark, guarded expression flickering in Nina’s blue eyes. She’s watching Millie, not warmly, but with a quiet tension. She doesn’t like Andrew complimenting her. Millie doesn’t understand why, though. It should be obvious to anyone how completely nuts Andrew is about his wife. There was no competition. There never could be.

“It does,” Nina says, her voice just a touch too tight.

Andrew laughs, throwing an arm around Nina’s waist. He seems so relaxed, so completely unaware of the currents running beneath his own roof. “Nina is hopeless in the kitchen,” he teases. “We would starve to death if it were all on her shoulders. My mother used to drop by with meals that she or her personal chef made. But since she and my father retired to Florida, we’ve been subsisting mostly on takeout. So you’re a savior, Millie.”

Nina gives a tight smile. Andrew means it as a joke, but no woman wants to be compared badly to another woman in her own kitchen. He’s an idiot if he doesn’t understand that. Then again — plenty of men are idiots.

Millie takes a breath, hoping to defuse the tension. “Dinner will be ready in about ten minutes. Why don’t you go relax in the living room and I’ll call you when it’s ready?”

Andrew lifts his eyebrows, as if he’s just had a wonderful idea. “Do you want to join us for dinner, Millie?”

The sharp inhale of Nina’s breath slices through the kitchen like a cold draft.

Before Nina can say anything, Millie is already shaking her head. Vigorously. “No, I’m just going to go up to my room and relax. Thank you for the invitation though.”

“Really? Are you sure?”

But Nina isn’t going to let this linger. She swats Andrew’s arm playfully — or perhaps not so playfully. “Andy, she’s been working all day. She doesn’t want to have dinner with her *employers*. She just wants to go upstairs and text message her friends. Right, Millie?”

“Right,” Millie says.

But she doesn’t have friends. At least, not on the outside. Not anymore.

Andrew doesn’t seem bothered either way. He was only being polite, unaware that Nina didn’t want Millie at that dinner table. And that’s just fine by Millie. She has no desire to intrude, no ambition to make Nina feel threatened. She just wants to keep her head down, do her job, and stay out of the crossfire. Because if the looks Nina keeps giving her are any indication, that’s the safest place to be.

The kitchen smells delicious. The house glows warmly. The marriage appears perfect.

But Millie knows better than to trust appearances. She’s already seen the cracks — the old photograph, the tight smiles, the dark flash in Nina’s eyes. And she can’t shake the feeling that this beautiful house is not quite as safe as it seems.

### Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

What a tense, deliciously unsettling chapter! I absolutely love the slow-building atmosphere here. On the surface, everything seems picture-perfect: the handsome husband, the elegant wife, the beautiful home, the incredible-smelling dinner. But underneath? You can practically feel the electricity crackling between Nina and Millie. Andrew may be oblivious, but the reader knows something darker is simmering just beneath the surface. Millie is sharp, observant, and self-protective — you can't help but root for her while also feeling like she's walking a tightrope over a pit of secrets.

I also love the small but crucial details — the old photograph, Nina's changing appearance, the possessive way she grabs Andrew, the way she dismisses Millie with a single sentence. This chapter doesn't have explosions, but it doesn't need them. The tension is quiet, creeping, and absolutely gripping.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars**

### Next Chapter Prediction

I predict the next chapter will dive deeper into the history between Nina and Andrew — and into Millie's own secrets. That old photograph is a clue, and Nina's passive-aggressive behavior is only going to escalate. I wouldn't be surprised if Millie uncovers something disturbing about the household — maybe something hidden in the locked rooms, or something about Nina's past that explains her obsessive grip on Andrew. And of course, the peanut butter incident might come crawling back to haunt her. Something tells me Millie's "peaceful" new job is about to get very complicated.
