# Chapter 13: The Stairway Down

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? I hope you’re ready for another intense ride, because today we are walking through Chapter 13 of **_The Housemaid’s Secret_** — a chapter that starts with a terrifying attack and ends with a decision that could change everything.

A sickening crack splits the air, followed by a heavy thud. The man who just tried to assault me lies sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, completely still. For one agonizing moment, I stand frozen at the top, staring down at his body. Is he dead? Did I kill him? My heart is pounding so hard I can barely breathe. Then my legs move on their own — I sprint down the steps, skidding to a halt beside him.

The can of mace is still clenched in my right hand as I bend down. His chest is rising and falling. A low groan escapes his lips. He’s alive. And honestly? A dark, furious part of me is disappointed. This man attacked me in the hallway of my own apartment building. If anyone deserved a broken neck, it’s him. But then I catch myself. No — it’s probably better that he’s not dead. I spent ten years in prison. I am not going back there.

But the rage doesn’t just disappear. Impulsively, I pull back my foot and kick him as hard as I can in the ribs. He moans louder. Definitely still alive. I kick him again — and a third time for good measure. Every time my sneaker connects with his ribs, a bitter smile tugs at my lips. It feels wrong. It feels right. It feels like the only power I have left in this moment.

Then my eyes drift to the next flight of stairs. A horrible thought creeps in. He survived one fall… what would happen if he went down a second flight? Or a third? He doesn’t look that heavy. I could roll him over and…

No. God, what am I thinking? I can’t do this. I won’t. I spent ten years in prison, and I refuse to let this monster send me back. Justice will not come from becoming a killer.

So I take out my phone and dial 911. My hands are shaking, but my mind is clear. I’m going to get my justice — the right way. And with that, Chapter 13 slams shut, leaving us breathless, shaken, and desperate to know what happens next.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating:**

Wow. Just wow. This chapter is a raw, gut-punching rollercoaster of fear, fury, and moral conflict. You can feel every ounce of the protagonist’s pain — the instinct to survive, the temptation to take revenge, and the hard-won strength to walk away from violence. The writing is tight, intense, and impossible to put down. My heart was racing from the first line to the last. This is exactly the kind of chapter that makes you want to hide behind your hands and keep reading at the same time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars**

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

In the next chapter, the police and an ambulance will swarm the apartment building. Xavier will be taken away with a broken arm, a concussion, and possibly a few broken ribs — battered, but alive. Brock will rush to the protagonist’s side, and she’ll have to explain the chaos without revealing every dark secret lurking inside her. But the bigger question remains: will Xavier talk? And is there someone even more dangerous waiting in the shadows? I have a feeling the danger is far from over.
