Brock freezes mid-sentence, a tiny blob of tahini sauce at the corner of his mouth. "What?"
"I think we're ready," she says. But that's another lie. Millie doesn't feel ready to move in with Brock. But she has absolutely no intention of returning to her apartment in the South Bronx while Xavier still lives there. She's not even sure she'd feel safe anywhere else in that neighborhood. Coexisting in the East Village feels safer, though certainly not safe. But moving in together is the right thing to say, and his face lights up with a beautiful smile.
"Okay. Sounds good to me." He reaches for her hand across the table. "I love you, Millie."
It's the critical moment. She needs to say it back. She opens her mouth, knowing these words matter, knowing she's at a crossroads. But just then—that creeping sensation at the back of her neck becomes unbearable. She whips her head around one more time, certain she'll see Xavier standing just feet away, staring at her with cold, predatory eyes.
Her eyes narrow as she scans the street behind her. *Where is that asshole?*
But she doesn't see Xavier anywhere. Either he ducked behind a mailbox, or he was never there. Instead, she sees one person she hadn't expected at all.
