Brock has no idea what's hiding inside the woman he's dating. Millie can barely look at his handsome face without feeling a heavy pang of guilt. He's movie-star gorgeous, kind, patient, and so clearly ready to build a life with her. But he doesn't know the truth about her past. And that, she realizes with a sickening twist in her stomach, isn't fair to him. It isn't fair to her either. Because someday he *will* find out—and when he does, he'll kick her to the curb.

She's still working for the Garrick family—for now. Douglas Garrick has no idea how much she knows. That afternoon she caught him with his mistress, she assumed he was watching her, maybe threatening her. But the more she turns it over in her mind, the less certain she is. He was way too busy whispering sweet nothings to another woman to pay any attention to the housemaid. She jumped to conclusions. And really, is discovering your boss is having an affair a good enough reason to walk away from a paycheck? In her world, jobs are hard to come by. Even though Brock would love to support her, Millie knows she can't afford to depend on anyone. She needs her own income, her own exit door, her own safety net. Just in case Brock eventually opens his eyes and throws her out with everything else she's afraid to confess.

As they stop at a red light, Brock reaches over and rests his warm hand on her knee. He smiles—that dazzling movie-star smile—and all Millie can think is: *This is a bad idea. He's making a terrible mistake with me.* She almost wishes he'd take his hand away. Since that lunch at the restaurant, he hasn't said the words "I love you" again, but his eyes scream them every single time he looks at her. He's said it twice now. She's said it exactly zero times. And if he says it a third time, she'll have no choice. She'll have to say it back or watch their relationship collapse like a house of cards. There's no question about that.

But before she can drown in that guilt, Brock pulls his hand away. They've turned onto her street. "What's going on here?" he asks, frowning ahead.

There's a police car in front of her building, lights flashing and swirling. Millie's stomach drops hard. In this neighborhood, police cars are a common sight. But she can't help wondering if this time they're here for *her*. What if Xavier changed his mind about pressing charges? What if they're about to slap handcuffs on her and drag her away in front of her boyfriend? In a panic, she urges Brock to turn around, to leave, to come back another time. Brock just crinkles his nose. "I'm not driving back to the Bronx again tomorrow. Come on, it'll be fine."

And just as Millie is on the verge of a full-blown panic attack, the building door swings open. An officer is escorting a man onto the street—handcuffed, head down, defeated. It's not her. It's just a drug bust. Millie exhales a shaky breath.

Then she sees the scar above the man's left eyebrow. *Xavier.*

She rolls down her window just in time to hear Xavier shout desperately at the officer: "You've got to believe me! Those drugs... I never even saw them before. They aren't mine!"

The officer rolls his eyes—a practiced, weary roll. "Yeah, that's what everyone says when we find a shitload of heroin in their apartment."

Xavier panics. Right before they reach the patrol car, he does something incredibly stupid—he shakes off the cop and bolts down the block, his hands still cuffed uselessly behind his back. He doesn't make it far. The officer catches up in seconds and throws him to the ground.

Millie watches it all, and for a moment, she feels a dark, delicious thrill. *This is the best show I've seen in months.* The man who assaulted her is finally getting what he deserves.

Brock's eyes are wide with shock. "Jesus Christ. You're lucky you're moving out of here."

"That's him," Millie breathes. "That's the man who assaulted me."

"Wow. So he was on drugs too? I guess that's no surprise."

But Millie doesn't think Xavier was on drugs. He always seemed sober, clear-eyed, deliberate. But if the police found heroin in his apartment—enough to suggest dealing—he's not coming back anytime soon. And in that instant, a thought bursts out of her mouth before she can stop it: "I don't have to move."

"What?" Brock's mouth falls open.

"He won't be living in the building anymore. So I don't have to leave."

There it is. The words hang in the air like smoke. Brock's lower lip juts out like a disappointed child's. "I don't understand. Don't you want to live with me?"

It's a question with no easy answer. Sure, Brock's place has extra space, air conditioning, and a doorman to keep burglars out. But those aren't reasons to share your life with someone. Millie tries to soften the blow: "I do. Someday. But... not yet."

"I see." His voice is icier than the wind outside.

She reaches out and squeezes his hand. He doesn't squeeze back. "I'm just the sort of person who needs my own space. That's all."

His blue eyes search hers, sharp and uncertain. "Is that really all?"

Millie wants to tell him the truth. She imagines Brock's wealthy parents running background checks on any woman their son might live with. Maybe they already have. They probably looked up "Millie Calloway"—and that was her saving grace. But it's only a matter of time before someone digs deeper and discovers that her real first name is actually Wilhelmina. Then Brock will learn everything—the past she's run from, the name she changed, the secrets she's buried. She has to come clean before that happens.

But with that asshole Xavier in jail, she's bought herself a short reprieve. For now, the truth can wait. But secrets like hers always claw their way back to the surface. And upstairs in the Garrick penthouse, a different kind of quiet is gathering—one that Millie won't be able to ignore for long.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter gave me so many feelings. The anxiety in the car with the police lights flashing was absolutely nerve-racking—I could feel Millie's panic right through the pages. And watching Xavier get dragged off in handcuffs? That was a deeply satisfying moment. But then Brock and Millie's conversation broke my heart. He's so ready to love her completely, and she's so terrified of being found out. The emotional tension is just as strong as the thriller tension, and that's what makes this series so addictive. The pacing is perfect, the dialogue feels real, and the ending leaves you desperate for more. I am thoroughly impressed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Now that Xavier is in jail, Millie can finally breathe—but that just means her mind will turn back to the Garrick house. With an unfamiliar woman hiding in the guest bedroom and that bloodstained nightgown still haunting her thoughts, I predict Millie is about to discover something even more disturbing in that penthouse. Maybe it's in the main bathroom, maybe it's in Douglas's private study—but it will prove that the blood wasn't innocent after all. And with Brock already suspicious of her excuses, Millie's carefully balanced double life is about to shatter. Watch out; the next chapter is going to be a storm.
