Wendy sat across from Millie, her pale face etched with exhaustion and fear. For the first time, she let the full weight of her misery spill out. She confessed something so dark, so chilling, that Millie’s heart nearly stopped.

“There was no possibility of ever escaping him,” Wendy whispered. “So I went to the bathroom and I thought about slitting my wrists.”

Millie gasped. “Oh my God, Wendy...”

But Wendy didn’t break down. Instead, she squared her jaw, and a flicker of determination appeared in her eyes. She explained that she hadn’t gone through with it — because for once, she didn’t feel entirely alone. She remembered Millie’s earlier advice: reach out to somebody Douglas doesn’t know. Somebody from her past that he had never met.

That’s when she thought of Fiona.

Fiona was one of Wendy’s closest friends from college, but they hadn’t spoken in years. No social media connections, no digital trail — completely invisible to Douglas. Wendy had tracked down Fiona’s phone number through another old college friend, swearing that friend to secrecy. That very morning, the two women talked for hours. Fiona lived on a farm just outside Potsdam, in upstate New York, mostly off the grid except for a landline. She listened to Wendy’s nightmare and didn’t hesitate: Wendy could stay with her for as long as she needed.

Millie silently applauded Wendy’s initiative, but her mind raced with worries. Hiding on a farm wasn’t a permanent solution. Wendy would need ID, a social security number, a job, a life. And with Douglas’s money and resources, he’d find her in a heartbeat if she ever used her real name. Going to the cops was pointless too — Millie knew from hard experience that incredibly rich, powerful men always know how to grease the right palms.

Wendy acknowledged the truth with a shaky breath. “I know it’s not a permanent solution,” she admitted. “But that’s okay. If I could just stay there for a little while and figure out my next move... Maybe I can find an attorney who can help me navigate the system while I’m hidden from him. Or maybe I can find somebody to help me start over. The important thing is that I won’t be with him anymore. And he won’t be able to get to me.”

Millie looked at her and said, “That’s amazing, Wendy.” And she meant it — even though it meant losing a very lucrative job. Still, she had saved that bracelet Wendy forced on her the other day; she could probably pawn it for a month’s rent. And after tomorrow’s conversation with Brock, she might be moving in together with him... or breaking up forever. One or the other.

But Wendy wasn’t finished. Her voice turned serious. “But here’s the thing — I need your help.”

Millie didn’t hesitate. “Of course! Anything you need.”

Wendy’s hand trembled as she tugged at her collar. “I need a ride.”

Her plan was bold, risky, and terrifying. Douglas was going out of town the next day — flying all the way across the country. It was the perfect window. Wendy would slip away while he was too far away to do anything about it, at least not immediately. Fiona couldn’t leave her farm for the whole day, but she agreed to pick Wendy up at Albany. All Wendy needed was a ride to get there.

She couldn’t rent a car herself — that would require her ID, and Douglas would trace it instantly.

“I’ll do it,” Millie interrupted. “I’ll rent the car. I’ll drive you to Albany — no problem.”

Tears welled in Wendy’s eyes as she clasped Millie’s hands. She promised to pay her in cash, but Millie brushed the money aside. “You need it more than I do.”

Then Wendy threw her arms around Millie, and only then did Millie feel just how fragile Wendy’s body truly was. She could crush her with a slightly too-tight hug.

When Wendy pulled away, tears glistened in her eyes. Her voice dropped to a grave whisper. “You have to know — if you help me, you’re putting yourself in danger.”

Millie nodded. “I understand that.”

But Wendy shook her head, licking her cracked lips. “No, you don’t. Douglas is an extremely dangerous man. I’m telling you, he will do whatever it takes to find me and bring me back to him. Whatever it takes.”

“I’m not scared,” Millie insisted.

But in the back of her mind, a small voice whispered something else: maybe she should be scared. Maybe it would be a grave mistake to underestimate Douglas Garrick.

**Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating**

This chapter is a masterclass in tension and emotion. Wendy’s vulnerability is heartbreaking — she was pushed to the edge of despair, and yet she found the courage to reach out and fight for her life. Millie’s loyalty is inspiring, but it also makes us nervous. We know how dangerous Douglas is, and we feel the storm gathering on the horizon. The writing pulls you right into the moment, making your heart pound as the plan begins to take shape. A powerful, gripping chapter that sets the stage for something explosive.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction**

Millie will follow through on her promise and rent a car, but the escape won’t go smoothly. Douglas might return earlier than expected, or someone close to Wendy may reveal the plan. I predict Millie will find herself caught in a terrifying game of cat and mouse — with Douglas closing in, and the truth about her own past threatening to surface at the worst possible moment.
