Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 28 of *The Housemaid's Secret*. So grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let’s dive right into the story.

The rumble of the car engine was the only sound filling the space between Millie and Wendy as they sped away from the chaos they’d left behind. Millie’s hands gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles pale, her mind racing faster than the wheels beneath her. Wendy sat in the passenger seat, quiet, fragile, the weight of her secret pressing down on her shoulders. Neither of them spoke much. The silence was heavy, but it was better than the alternative—saying something they couldn’t take back.

Then Millie’s phone vibrated. The screen lit up with a name she didn’t want to see: Brock. Her stomach dropped. She had completely forgotten—tonight was supposed to be *their* night. He was expecting her at seven o’clock. And here she was, hours away, tangled in a web of secrets and lies.

She glanced at Wendy, who gave her a small, anxious nod. *You go ahead,* Millie croaked out, her voice barely a whisper. *I'll meet you inside.*

This was not going to be a quick conversation. Or maybe it would be. She had no idea.

As soon as Wendy was out of the car, Millie took a deep breath and answered the call. Brock’s voice came through, sharp and furious. “Where are you? I thought you were coming here at seven.”

“Um,” Millie stammered. “I had a change of plans.”

“Okay, so when will you be here?”

Her heart ached. She wished she could say she was just around the corner, but reality was brutal—she was hours away. There was no easy way to tell him the truth. “I don’t think I’m going to make it tonight.”

“Why not?”

More than anything, she wanted to spill everything. It would be such a relief to share this terrible burden with someone, to let the words tumble out and have him hold her. But Wendy had sworn her to secrecy, and for good reason. So she lied. “I’ve got work to do. Studying.”

The silence on the other end was deafening. Then Brock exploded. “Are you serious? Millie, we had plans for tonight. And not only did you not show up without telling me, but now you've got some bullshit excuse about studying?”

Millie flinched. She didn’t understand why studying wasn’t a valid excuse—she *could* need to study tonight. But she knew Brock wasn’t really angry about the studying. He was angry about something deeper. Something she had been avoiding for far too long.

“Listen, Brock—” she tried, but he cut her off.

“No, you listen,” he grunted, his voice low and strained. “I’ve been patient, but I’m running out of patience. I need to know how you feel about me and where this whole relationship is going. Because I’m ready for something more, and I’d like to know that I’m not wasting my time.”

Millie’s throat tightened. Brock was so ready to settle down. She knew it was partly because of his bad heart, the ticking clock that made him crave stability, and partly that indescribable hunger for something more that hits people in their thirties. He wasn’t messing around. She had to either take him seriously or cut him loose. It was the right thing to do.

“You're not wasting your time,” she murmured into the phone. “I promise. Things are just a little crazy for me right now, but I swear, I really care about you.”

“Do you? Because sometimes I’m not sure you do.”

She knew what he was looking for. She knew the words he wanted to hear. And she knew she had two choices: tell him what he wanted to hear, or break it off. And she didn’t want to break it off. Even if she didn’t mean what she was about to say, Brock was a really, really good guy. The life she had imagined with him—a house in the suburbs, kids running around, a normal, perfect life—was everything she had ever wanted. And she didn’t want to lose him.

“I do care about you,” she said, taking a deep breath. “I... I love you.”

She could almost hear the fight drain out of him. His voice softened, warm and relieved. “I love you too, Millie. I really do.”

“And we do need to have a talk,” she added, her heart sinking. She had to tell him everything about her—soon. She couldn’t stand waiting for the other shoe to drop any longer. She needed to lay it all out and make sure he still wanted to be with her. “As soon as things settle down, okay? Next week.”

“Okay,” Brock said, and she was pretty sure he would agree to anything right now. “And if you finish your studying, maybe we could have dinner tomorrow? And spend the night at my place.”

They always spent the night at his place. She didn’t even know why he bothered to keep a change of clothes and a bottle of his pills at her place. But his place was nicer and more convenient. “Sure.”

“I love you, Millie.”

Oh. They were apparently ending their conversations this way now. She swallowed hard. “I love you too.”

She hung up, her hand trembling. The conversation should have brought her comfort, but instead, it left a cold, hollow feeling in her chest. She still had her boyfriend—but for how long? He said he loved her, but sometimes she felt like he barely knew who she was. Maybe it would all be okay. Maybe he would find out the truth about her past and still love her. Maybe they could still be together, get that house in the suburbs, and fill it up with kids. Have a normal, perfect life together.

Except... she strongly suspected that could never happen for her. She had never been normal, never been perfect, and there had only been one man in her life who had ever truly understood that.

Her eyes drifted to the rearview mirror, to the dark road stretching behind them, and she pushed the thought away.

The drive to Albany was long and grueling. Under the best circumstances, it would’ve taken three to four hours. But with traffic, it stretched to nearly five, and that was before the extra thirty minutes they lost when they stopped at a McDonald’s—though Millie had to admit, it was worth it to see Wendy scarf down a quarter pounder and a medium fries with such joy. Now she still had to make the trip back, but it was after nine o’clock, and the roads were finally clear. She was sure she could make it in under three hours.

When they got close to Albany, Millie pulled off the highway at a rest stop that advertised a motel. It was exactly what they were looking for—a cheap-looking place with a flickering sign that screamed vacancies. The rooms opened to the outside, which meant Wendy wouldn’t have to walk through a lobby and draw attention to herself. Millie pulled into the sparsely occupied parking lot and put the car in park.

“Well,” she said, forcing a small smile, “here we are.”

“Yes...” Wendy’s voice trailed off. They had not talked much during the trip, mostly listening to music, and now the panic mounted in her eyes. “Millie, maybe this is a mistake.”

Millie reached out and gently touched her arm. “It’s not a mistake. You’re absolutely doing the right thing.”

But Wendy squeezed her hands together, her knuckles white, her face pale. “He’s smarter than me.”

The words hung in the air like a storm cloud. Millie knew that Wendy was terrified—terrified of the man who was chasing them, terrified of the truth that had driven her to flee. And as Millie looked at her, she couldn’t help but wonder if she was really strong enough to protect them both.

But there was no turning back now.

It’s absolutely impossible to read this chapter without feeling every ounce of Millie’s anxiety and guilt. The way she says “I love you” to Brock while her heart is elsewhere—torn between the life she wants and the life she’s trapped in—is heartbreaking. And Wendy’s fear is palpable. You can almost smell the stale motel air and feel the dread creeping in. This chapter is a masterclass in tension, and Freida McFadden keeps you glued to the page, desperate to know what happens next.

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Wendy is about to walk into that motel room, but I suspect this is not the end of their ordeal. The man Wendy is hiding from—he’s smart, and he’s not going to stop hunting her. Millie might think she has everything under control, but that motel is about to become the setting for something far more dangerous. Brock, meanwhile, is waiting for answers he doesn’t truly understand. And Millie’s past—that one man who knew her completely—is bound to resurface, turning this fragile plan into a deadly game of secrets, lies, and survival.
