# Chapter 3: The Night the Truth Almost Came Out

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 3 of *The Housemaid’s Secret* — a chapter bursting with humiliation, unexpected laughter, and a proposal that Millie absolutely cannot accept, no matter how perfect it sounds.

Let’s jump right back into Millie’s chaotic world.

After being fired by Amber Degraw, Millie is completely shattered. Her head is spinning, her pride is bruised, and all she wants to do is crawl into bed and disappear. She was supposed to meet Brock — her thoughtful, handsome, incredibly convincing lawyer boyfriend — for dinner at a restaurant in Chelsea after her classes. But after the disaster with Amber, she simply cannot face a nice evening out. She feels too raw, too broken, too mortified. So instead of heading to Chelsea, she goes straight home to her apartment in the South Bronx.

She knows she should text Brock to cancel. She knows it. But she keeps putting it off, wallowing in self-pity, and eventually — she completely forgets. By the time she realizes what she's done, Brock is already sitting at the restaurant, waiting for her like a fool. And that makes her feel like the worst girlfriend on the planet.

And as if the day couldn’t get any more embarrassing, there’s a sudden, deafening knock at her door. Actually, let’s be honest — it’s not a knock. It’s Brock. He’s standing right there in her doorway, looking deeply worried. He tells her he was terrified something terrible had happened to her. Millie feels a sharp stab of guilt. Not only did she stand him up at dinner, but now he’s traveled all the way to the South Bronx — a neighborhood where sirens blare past the window like background music — just to make sure she’s still alive.

She knows she owes him an explanation. So she drops the bomb: “Amber Degraw fired me.” Brock’s perfect eyebrows shoot up in surprise. He reminds her that she had told him Amber couldn’t function without her — that Millie was basically raising her child. And then Millie explains the absurd, ridiculous truth: Amber’s little girl, Olive, wouldn’t stop calling her “mama.” And Amber absolutely lost her mind.

Brock stares at her for a moment. And then, unexpectedly, he bursts out laughing. At first, Millie is offended. She just lost her job! How can he laugh? But then she starts laughing too. She throws her head back and lets the absurdity of it all wash over her. She pictures Olive reaching for her with desperate little arms, sobbing “mama” over and over while Amber’s face got redder and redder, until Millie seriously thought Amber might pop a blood vessel in her brain. The whole thing is insane. The two of them laugh until tears are streaming down their faces.

And just like that, the tension melts away. Brock wraps his arms around her and pulls her close. He’s no longer angry about being stood up — because honestly, Brock doesn’t get angry easily. Most people would call that one of his best qualities. Though Millie sometimes wishes he showed a little more passion.

But here’s the thing — Millie and Brock are in the perfect sweet spot of their relationship. Six months. Is there any better time in a relationship than six months? Millie genuinely doesn’t know, because she’s only reached that milestone twice in her life. Six months is that wonderful period when you’ve finally shed the awkwardness of early dating, but you’re still showing each other your absolute best side.

Brock is a handsome thirty-two-year-old lawyer from a well-to-do family. He seems just about perfect. Millie is sure he has bad habits — maybe he digs earwax out of his ear and wipes it on the sofa, or maybe he even eats it — but she doesn’t actually know his flaws. She only knows one imperfection: a heart condition he’s had since childhood. It doesn’t seem to slow him down. He takes a pill every day, he keeps a spare bottle at Millie’s place, and his uncertainty about his life expectancy has made him more eager than most men to settle down.

And that brings them to the moment Millie has been dreading. Brock looks at her with those warm, hopeful eyes and suggests she move in with him. He makes the most persuasive argument: a beautiful two-bedroom apartment overlooking Central Park, a building where you won’t get your throat slit during the night, and the freedom to focus on her college degree so she can become a social worker and do actual good in the world. It sounds like a no-brainer. It sounds like everything she could ever want.

But every time Millie considers saying yes, a voice in the back of her head screams: *Don’t do it!* Because there is one very good reason not to move in with Brock. He has no idea who she really is. His secrets — if he has any — are nothing compared to hers. Millie is carrying a past she can’t reveal, a truth too dangerous to speak aloud. If she tells him, he might leave her. But if she doesn’t tell him... someday, somehow, he’s going to find out everything. And she is not ready for that.

So she does what she hates doing. She lies. “I need my own space right now,” she says. Brock opens his mouth to argue, then thinks better of it. He knows her well enough to know how stubborn she can be. He settles for one final request: “At least tell me you’ll think about it.”

“I’ll think about it,” Millie lies.

But as the words leave her mouth, she knows she won’t. She can’t. Because moving in with Brock would mean letting him in. And letting him in would mean exposing the darkest parts of her life. The parts she has spent years trying to bury.

So the chapter ends with Millie trapped between two impossible futures: a perfect life with a man who loves her, and the terrifying secret she can never let him discover.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

Oh my goodness, what a chapter! I felt every single emotion right alongside Millie — the shame of being fired, the warmth of Brock’s laughter, and the heavy weight of her secrets pressing down on her chest. The way Freida McFadden blends humor with heartbreak is absolutely brilliant. One moment I’m giggling at the “mama” incident, and the next I’m aching for Millie because she’s so trapped by her past. This chapter gives us so much depth into her relationship with Brock, and the moving-in proposal creates a delicious tension that makes you desperate to keep reading. I honestly can’t get enough.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

I have a feeling Brock isn’t going to let this go easily. He’s in love with Millie, he wants a future with her, and he’s running out of time in his own mind. But Millie’s money problems are about to get desperate — she has no savings, no job, and nowhere to turn. I predict that in the next chapter, Millie will be forced into a risky decision, maybe even a new job that feels too good to be true. And with her criminal record lurking in the shadows, it’s only a matter of time before the past comes crashing back into her so-called perfect life.
