My hand trembled around the mace in my purse as I stood before the penthouse door. Douglas had summoned me here—me. Why? To punish me for helping Wendy escape? That seemed exactly like something he would do. I could picture his cold smile, the way he toyed with people like chess pieces. But I wasn’t going to be caught off guard. I gripped the little canister, my phone tucked deep in my jeans pocket, ready to call for help if everything went sideways.

I stepped inside, and the silence hit me like a wall. Every footstep echoed through that vast, empty apartment like gunshots in a cave. My eyes darted around the living room, searching for movement, searching for danger. Then I saw it. A crimson stain soaked into the carpet. And then—my heart stopped.

There was a body.

It lay sprawled across the sectional sofa, motionless and horrible. Wendy. I cried out her name. All those worst-case scenarios flooded through my mind: Douglas had found her, hurt her, killed her. I rushed over, my chest heaving, bracing myself to see a knife wound or blood staining the front of her dark blue dress. But there was nothing. No wound. No blood.

And then she opened her eyes.

I nearly collapsed right there. My heart went into some wild, irregular rhythm—I honestly could have used one of Brock’s medications. “Oh my God! I thought you were—dead!” I gasped.

Wendy sat up slowly, and that’s when the crimson on the floor finally made sense. It was red wine—spilled from a tipped-over glass on the coffee table. She laughed, a bitter, hollow laugh. “Oh, I wish.”

My relief lasted only a second before I noticed the fresh bruise blooming on her left cheek. The last one had almost faded, but this new mark was raw, angry, unmistakable. I winced. “Your face,” I breathed.

“That’s not the worst of it,” Wendy muttered. She shifted, trying to prop herself up, and flinched hard, grabbing her rib cage. “He definitely broke my ribs.”

“You need to go to the hospital!” I urged.

“Not a chance,” she said, shooting me a sharp look. “But I could use an ice pack.”

I ran to the kitchen, found one in the freezer, wrapped it in a dish towel, and brought it back to her. She took it gratefully, hesitated, then pressed it carefully against her chest.

Then she began to explain, her voice barely a whisper. “He was waiting for me. When we got to Fiona’s farm in Potsdam. He was already there. He knew.”

I shook my head, unable to process it. I had thought Douglas might find her eventually, but so fast? It made no sense.

“I don’t know how he found me so quickly,” Wendy said, closing her eyes as if trying to block out the pain. “I thought I had more time…”

“I know,” I whispered.

Then her eyes snapped open, and she turned to me with a new kind of sharpness in her gaze. “Millie. Did you tell anyone where we went?”

“Absolutely not!” I said immediately. But even as the words left my mouth, a flicker of guilt passed through me. I had told one person. Enzo. But Enzo would never say a word. If anything, he would try to protect her. Telling Enzo was as good as telling nobody—I was sure of it.

Wendy adjusted the ice pack and let out a defeated sigh. “I was stupid to think I could ever get away from him. This is my life. It’s easier if I just… accept it.”

“You shouldn’t accept it!” I reached out and squeezed her hand. “Wendy, I’m going to help you. You do not have to spend the rest of your life putting up with him.”

“I know you mean well…” she trailed off, doubt heavy in her voice.

“No.” My jaw twitched. “Listen to me. I’m going to help you. I promise.”

Wendy said nothing. She didn’t believe me anymore. But I meant every word. I was going to make this right somehow. I would not let Douglas Garrick get away with hurting her like this.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

This chapter hit me right in the chest. Watching Wendy battered and broken, yet still guarded and defeated, broke my heart. And Millie’s fierce promise felt like a turning point—there’s steel in her now. The red wine scare was brilliantly cruel, making us feel the absolute terror of walking in on what looks like a murder. I loved the tension, the raw emotion, and the quiet strength in Millie’s vow. The writing pulls you in and doesn’t let go.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

Millie is still working for the Garricks, which means she’s walking a razor’s edge. I predict she’ll finally come clean to Brock about her past—just when he’s getting ready to introduce her to his family. Meanwhile, Wendy’s silent defeat suggests she might be planning something desperate. Douglas is lurking, dangerous, and watching. I think the next chapter will bring Millie’s double life crashing down, and someone’s going to get caught.
