# Chapter 37: The Sound of a Gun

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 37 of *The Housemaid’s Secret* — a chapter where the walls of a penthouse close in, where every shadow hides a secret, and where a single decision could change everything.

Let me take you back into Millie’s world — the maid who has seen too much, heard too much, and now carries a terrible weight in her chest.

---

The afternoon had been deceptively quiet. Millie stood in the master bedroom, folding a small load of laundry — undershirts, underwear, socks — nothing that seemed even remotely dirty when she tossed them into the machine. But her mind wasn’t on the fabric. It was on the gun. That gun. Hidden inside a hollowed-out dictionary in the bookcase down the hall. A loaded revolver that Wendy had shown her two days ago, dark and heavy with promise.

Millie’s thoughts raced in circles. She had made Wendy swear she wouldn’t do anything stupid. And Wendy had promised. But Millie didn’t believe her. Not really. She had seen the desperation in Wendy’s bruised face, the trembling hands wrapped around that cold metal. Wendy had reached the end of her rope — and the next time Douglas pushed her too far, she might just pull the trigger.

And honestly? Millie wouldn’t have minded if that asshole got what he deserved. But she knew the truth: if Wendy killed him, Wendy would go to prison. There were no medical records, no hospital visits, no documentation of the abuse. Millie could testify, but her word might not be enough against the polished, wealthy Douglas Garrick.

So Millie made a decision. She would call Enzo tomorrow. Let him handle it. He knew “the guys.” He knew how to make things disappear. It made sense when they were dating to work as a team, but being around him now felt like reopening a wound. Still, Enzo would help Wendy. Millie was sure of it.

She was just finishing the laundry when a crash reverberated from down the hallway.

That sound. She had heard it before. The crash of something heavy hitting the wall. The thud of a body. But this time, Millie knew exactly what it was: Wendy being hurt.

Her feet moved before her mind caught up. Out of the master bedroom, down the dim hallway. The guestroom door was closed tight, as always. And she could hear Douglas’s voice — booming, furious, unaware that Millie was still in the house.

“I just saw this charge on the credit card!” he roared. “What is this? Eighty dollars for lunch at La Cipolla?”

Millie’s blood ran cold. She had never heard him speak to Wendy like this. He must have thought she had already left. He thought he could say anything.

Wendy’s voice was frantic, desperate. “I... I’m sorry. I met my friend Gisele for lunch, and she’s between jobs, so I offered to pay.”

“Who told you that you could leave the house?”

“What?”

“Who told you that you could leave the house, Wendy?”

“I’m sorry, it’s just so hard to be inside all the time and...”

“Someone could have seen you!” Douglas ranted. “They could’ve seen your face, and then what would they think about me?”

Wendy groveled. Apologized. Swore. But Douglas wasn’t done. He twisted her words, accused her of lying, demanded to know if she had been with the same man who drove her upstate. And then came the accusation that cut deepest: “That restaurant is awfully romantic for you and a friend, isn’t it?”

Wendy sobbed, insisting it was Gisele. But Douglas’s fury only grew. “I’m not going to allow my tramp wife to go all around town with some other man! It’s humiliating.”

And then — a sickening crash.

Wendy screamed.

Millie’s heart slammed against her ribs. She couldn’t let him hurt her. She had to do something. But the room had gone completely silent.

And then she heard it — a gurgling sound. Like a woman being choked.

No more messing around. Millie had to stop this. Right now.

And then she remembered the gun.

---

She knew exactly where it was.

She raced to the bookcase, pulled out the dictionary, and there it was — nestled in the hollowed-out spot, waiting for her. Her hands trembled slightly as she wrapped her fingers around the cold steel. Staring at the revolver, she wondered if she was making a grave mistake. Bringing a gun into this could make things worse. Someone could get shot. Things could take a terrible turn.

But Millie wasn’t going to shoot Douglas. That was off the table. Her only intention was to scare him. Nothing was scarier than a gun. She was counting on the element of surprise to end this once and for all.

With the revolver nestled in her hand, she hurried back down the dark hallway toward the guestroom. The fighting had stopped. Everything was silent — and somehow, that silence was the scariest thing of all.

She considered knocking. Then she reached for the doorknob instead.

And turned it.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating

What a heart-stopping chapter! Freida McFadden knows exactly how to crank up the tension. The mundane act of folding laundry becomes the calm before a storm, and Millie’s internal conflict — wanting to protect Wendy but knowing that violence will only make things worse — is painfully real. The shift from Douglas’s verbal abuse to that gurgling sound is chilling, and the way Millie grabs the gun and races back is pure edge-of-your-seat thriller material. I love how Millie’s decision to call Enzo shows her growth, yet her instinct to intervene physically proves she can’t just walk away. This chapter is a masterclass in suspense.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

## Next Chapter Prediction

Oh, this is going to be explosive. Millie has the gun in her hand and she’s opening that door — but what will she find inside? Is Douglas actually strangling Wendy, or has something even more twisted happened? I predict Millie will burst in and confront Douglas at gunpoint, forcing a terrifying standoff. But knowing Freida McFadden, there’s a twist coming: maybe Wendy did something to Douglas first, or maybe the gun will change hands, and Millie will be forced to make an impossible choice. One thing is certain — someone is going to die, or everything is going to come crashing down.
