# Chapter 44: The Breaking Point
Hello, my dear readers, it’s me again! How are you all doing? I hope you’re ready, because today’s chapter is an emotional gut punch. Chapter 44 of *The Housemaid’s Secret* brings us into the cold, harsh reality of an interrogation room—where the truth gets twisted, hearts get shattered, and Millie finds herself more alone than ever. Grab a tissue, because this one hurts.

The interrogation room was small, gray, and suffocating. Every second stretched into an eternity. Millie had called Brock, her boyfriend, desperate for someone to stand by her side while Detective Ramirez threw accusation after accusation at her. She had expected support. She had expected trust. What she got instead was a slow, agonizing unraveling of everything they had built.
When Brock finally walked in, he didn’t greet her with concern. He didn’t rush to her side. He sat down in that hard plastic chair and stared at the table as if he couldn’t bear to look at her. Twenty minutes. That’s all it took for her world to collapse.
“Brock?” she whispered.
He slowly lifted his eyes—and those eyes were burning with pain and anger.
“Are you okay?” she asked gently.
“No.” The word came out like a blade. He gave her a seething look. “What the fuck was that, Millie? Seriously?”
Her heart hammered. “Brock, you can’t possibly believe—”
“Believe what?” He snapped, cutting her off. “Up until a few hours ago, I didn’t even know you had been in prison for murder. And now I find out that you’ve been cheating on me with that rich asshole you’ve been working for—”
“I wasn’t cheating!” Millie burst out, her voice cracking. “I would never cheat on you!”
“Then what the hell were you doing last Wednesday night?” he demanded. “What were you doing last night? And all the other nights we were supposed to be having dinner but you blew me off? You must see how this all looks pretty damn suspicious. Especially since, you know, you apparently killed a guy once.”
She wanted to tell him it wasn’t like that. That there was more—so much more. But every word she said seemed to dig her grave deeper. She tried to explain: “I told you, I was trying to help Wendy.”
“You were trying to help the woman who is now accusing you of having an affair with her husband and then murdering him?”
Millie’s throat tightened. When he said it that way, it sounded impossible. “I don’t know why she’s telling the detective that. Maybe she panicked. But trust me, he was abusive to her. I saw it with my own eyes.”
Brock shook his head, his handsome face twisted with anguish. “Millie. I called you last night, and you sounded really upset over something. Obviously, you didn’t have a stomach bug. That was a lie.”
“Yes,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “That was a lie.”
And then came the question she had been dreading.
“Millie.” His voice cracked on her name. “Did you kill Douglas Garrick?”
Almost everything Detective Ramirez had accused her of was untrue. But one thing was absolutely true. She had shot Douglas Garrick. She had killed him. And even if she denied everything else, that fact remained.
She didn’t answer. She couldn’t.
“Oh Christ,” Brock muttered. “Millie, I can’t believe you would…”
“It’s not what you think though,” she pleaded.
But it was too late. His chair scraped against the hard floor as he rose to his feet. His face was pale, his hand running obsessively through his hair. “I can’t represent you, Millie. It’s not appropriate, and… I can’t.”
Fear clawed at her chest. He was her lawyer. He was her boyfriend. He was the only anchor she had left. “You know I don’t have any money for a lawyer…”
“So you can use the public defender,” he said flatly. “Or borrow money, or… I don’t know. But it can’t be me. I’m sorry.”
Her chin wobbled as she looked up at him, tears welling in her eyes. “So that’s it. You’re breaking up with me.”
“I guess?” He shook his head, his voice hollow. “Honestly, I don’t even know who you are.” He pulled at his hair, his composure crumbling. “I can’t believe this is happening. I really can’t. I wanted you to meet my parents. I really thought that you and I…”
He didn’t need to finish. They both knew what he imagined—a future. Marriage. Children. Growing old together. He never imagined it would end in a police station, with her being interrogated for murder.
And so, as the door shut behind him, Millie burst into tears. She couldn’t blame him. How could she? But that knowledge didn’t make the pain hurt any less.
The real miracle came afterward. Detective Ramirez, for reasons Millie couldn’t understand, did not arrest her. When he told her she was free to go, she actually asked, “Are you sure?” She was certain they were about to shove her into a cell. But he let her leave with only a warning: do not leave town.
As if she could. She had no money. No car. Now, no boyfriend. She wasn’t going anywhere.
Outside the station, she reached instinctively for her phone. Then she realized she had nobody to call. Ordinarily, she would have called Brock to tell him she had been released—but she had a feeling he didn’t care anymore.
Of course, there was one person who would care. Enzo.
Enzo would help her. If she called him, he would believe every word she said without question. But she didn’t know if she wanted to go down that road again. She had made that whole big speech about not needing his help. She couldn’t crawl back to him a week later begging to be saved.
No. She could save herself. She wasn’t even under arrest. Maybe this whole thing would work out.
After debating her options for a moment, she selected Wendy’s number.

## Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating
Oh, this chapter stung. Millie has been through so much already, and watching Brock—the one person she thought she could trust—walk away was absolutely heartbreaking. You can’t entirely blame him, but still, as a reader, you feel the unfairness of it all. Millie’s decisions have put her in a corner, but the way she still refuses to give up is inspiring. The interrogation room tension was masterfully written, and the chapter leaves you desperate for answers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars
## Next Chapter Prediction
Millie is about to confront Wendy directly—and that conversation is going to be explosive. With Wendy accusing Millie of murder, and Millie the only one who knows the truth about Douglas’s abuse, the next chapter promises lies, confrontation, and probably a shocking confession. Will Wendy crack under pressure, or will she double down and ruin Millie for good? And with Enzo still out there, waiting in the shadows, Millie might be forced to swallow her pride and ask for help after all.
