# Chapter 47: The Nutella Ultimatum

Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 47 of *The Housemaid's Secret* — and oh, what a deliciously tense chapter this one is. We’re about to witness a private moment between Wendy and Douglas that reveals just how fragile their relationship truly is. There’s a party to attend, a fiancé who doesn’t want to go, and a late-night visit from a lawyer that changes everything. So grab your favorite snack, settle in, and let’s dive right into the story.

It was supposed to be a perfect evening. Wendy had it all planned: she would slip into her brand-new Prada dress, her auburn hair perfectly styled and highlighted, and walk into Leland’s party on the arm of her handsome, impossibly wealthy fiancé. Everyone would see her. Everyone would finally understand that the girl who once had nothing had made it. And Douglas? He’d be wearing the Armani suit she had chosen specifically to hide the paunch around his middle. No more cheap, ill-fitting suits that showed off his gut. No more reminders of the man he used to be before she came into his life.

But Douglas had other plans.

There he stood in the kitchen, barefoot and unbothered, a jar of Nutella in one hand and a knife in the other, smearing the dark brown spread across the marble counter like he had all the time in the world.

“It got hungry,” he said, as if that explained anything.

Wendy’s patience was evaporating by the second. “Douglas, we are supposed to go in ten minutes. You’re not even dressed.”

“Go where?” he asked with infuriating innocence.

He was tormenting her. He had to be. Nobody could genuinely be this clueless. “Leland’s house! The party is tonight!”

Douglas groaned and rubbed his temples, as if the mere thought of socializing was physically painful. “Christ, do we have to go? We hate Leland and her husband. Didn’t we say that? Also, what kind of name is Leland? She definitely made that name up.”

Wendy had to admit—he wasn’t wrong. They *did* hate Leland and her husband. And Leland *was* a pretentious name. But that didn’t mean they could skip the party. Everyone would be there. And Wendy wanted them all to see her looking flawless, draped in designer labels, with the richest man in the room hanging off her arm.

“We have to go,” she said through her teeth. “I don’t want to hear another word about it. You need to get dressed—now.”

But Douglas, of course, didn’t take the hint. Instead, he grabbed Wendy’s arm and pulled her close, his breath smelling of hazelnut. “But Wendy. Come on, the party is going to be such a drag. Let’s just... I don’t know, let’s go see a movie, just the two of us? Like we used to when we were first going out? The new Avengers movie maybe?”

Wendy blinked. There it was again—the part of Douglas she hadn’t expected when she first met him. Behind the CEO of Coinstock, behind the crazy genius who had invented a piece of technology that every bank in the country now used, was a hopeless nerd who just wanted to watch superhero movies, veg out on the couch with his laptop balanced on his stomach, and eat Nutella straight from the jar. It was almost endearing. Almost.

“We are going to this party,” she repeated, her voice now carrying the weight of a final warning. “Now get dressed. Chop, chop.”

Douglas sighed and leaned in for a Nutella kiss, but Wendy stepped back, holding up her hands like shields. She was wearing Prada. There were lines. “You can kiss me after you change,” she informed him.

Grumbling, Douglas shoved the jar back into the cabinet and trudged out of the kitchen into their impossibly small living room.

And that living room, oh, it was a disgrace. The whole apartment was a disgrace. They only had three bedrooms, and one of them had been turned into Douglas’s office, so really it felt like two. Wendy could already picture it: the moment they got married, she’d demand a serious upgrade. A mansion. A dream house in the suburbs.

Well, it was really Douglas’s dream house. Because Wendy’s dream was certainly not to live in the suburbs.

She allowed herself a small smile, thinking about the life she was building. Her father had been a maintenance worker. Her mother had scraped by on minimum wage at a preschool. She’d grown up in a tiny house, sharing a bedroom with her younger sister, who wet the bed at night until she was eight years old. But Wendy had studied hard. She’d earned a scholarship to a snooty private high school—where the children had mocked her for not dressing like them. All she’d ever wanted was a pair of designer jeans like her beautiful, cruel classmate Madeleine Edmundson. And maybe a winter coat that wasn’t a hand-me-down with holes in it.

She thought college would change things, but no. There had been that awful incident—the accusation of cheating—and she hadn’t been allowed to return for her junior year. Every career prospect had disappeared the moment she was escorted off campus.

But now? Look at her. Just look at her.

Maddeningly, the doorbell rang.

Before Wendy could even tell Douglas she’d handle it, he called out from the other room, “That’s probably Joe. He’s dropping off some papers I need. It’ll just be a minute.”

Joe Bendeck. Douglas’s lawyer. Part of the reason Douglas was so rich, no doubt. But Joe was not Wendy’s favorite person in the world. And the feeling was mutual—the man had a barely concealed distaste for her, and she could feel it every time he looked at her.

Still, it was strange for him to stop by so late in the evening. Not completely unprecedented, but unusual. Wendy’s curiosity prickled. What did he want?

While Douglas went to talk to Joe at the door, Wendy lingered nearby, her ears straining to catch every word. Douglas never involved her in his business, but she knew it was smart to stay informed. Knowledge was power. And Wendy was not about to be left in the dark.

“Is this everything?” Douglas’s voice drifted toward her.

“Yes,” Joe replied. “And I also have something else for you...”

She heard the shuffling of paper. The sound of Douglas opening an envelope.

“Aw, Joe. I told you, I can’t ask her to do this...”

“Doug, you have to. Your wedding is in only a few weeks, and you can’t marry that woman without a prenup.”

Wendy’s blood ran cold.

“Why not? I trust her,” Douglas said.

“Big mistake.”

Wendy held her breath. She could feel the temperature of the room drop. Or maybe that was just the ice forming in her veins.

“Look, I can’t... it’s like starting a marriage on the wrong foot,” Douglas protested.

“Let me give you some free legal advice, Doug. If this falls apart on you, she is going to get half of everything you worked for. This document is the only thing protecting you. You would be a complete idiot to marry her without making her sign one.”

“But—”

“No buts. You don’t marry that woman unless she signs this. If she truly loves you and cares about staying married to you, then it shouldn’t matter to her, right?”

Silence.

Wendy waited, her heart hammering against her ribs. She waited for Douglas to tell Joe to go to hell. She waited for him to defend her. To say that their love was more important than some stupid legal document.

But Joe Bendeck was not just Douglas’s lawyer. He was his oldest and closest friend.

And so, in a voice that felt like a betrayal, Douglas finally spoke.

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll get it done.”

## Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter is a slow-burn gut punch. At first, it almost feels like a lighthearted domestic squabble—Nutella kisses, grumpy fiancés, party dress drama—but underneath all of it, Wendy’s ambitions are clearly running the show. She loves the idea of Douglas more than she loves Douglas himself, and the backstory about her childhood, the scholarship girl with holes in her coat, explains so much about her hunger for status. And then that final scene... hearing Joe hand Douglas a prenup and watching Douglas cave in? It’s chilling. Wendy is not the kind of woman who forgets a betrayal like this, and you can just feel the explosion building. This is masterful tension, and it leaves you desperate to turn the page.

**Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.8 / 5 Stars**

## Next Chapter Prediction

Now that Douglas has agreed to have Wendy sign the prenup, the next chapter is bound to be explosive. I predict Wendy will put on the performance of a lifetime—tears, hurt feelings, accusations of not being trusted—but behind those crocodile tears, a dangerous plan will begin to form. She wanted security, wealth, and revenge on everyone who looked down on her. If a piece of paper threatens to take away half of Douglas’s fortune, she will not go down without a fight. Expect a battle of wills, a marriage on the brink before it even begins, and maybe a clever move from Wendy that Joe Bendeck never saw coming.
