Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? I hope you're ready for another emotional, nail-biting ride, because today I'm going to walk with you through Chapter 56 of *The Housemaid's Secret* — a chapter that takes a dark and cunning turn. Here, we see a woman pushed to her absolute limits, and worse — she starts to believe the only way out is to make someone else pay. So sit tight, because this chapter will leave your heart racing.

It all began with that crushing, bitter conversation with Russell, the man I've been seeing behind my husband's back. I stood in front of him, my hands shaking, my whole world collapsing in slow motion. Douglas — my wealthy, controlling, utterly heartless husband — had cut me off completely. He was threatening to sell the apartment, the very roof over my head. And if he sold it? I'd have no choice but to go live with him, a man who clearly wanted nothing to do with me.

"Who knows what he wants?" I snapped at Russell, throwing my hands up in sheer frustration. "He's just trying to punish me."

And he was. The lie he'd latched onto — the absurd accusation that I was trying to get pregnant — had pushed him over the edge. Douglas wanted me to suffer for my sins, as if I was some criminal locked in a cage of his making. The thought made my stomach churn.

"But what can I do?" I whispered, feeling smaller with every passing second.

Russell looked at me, his eyes soft but determined. "You could divorce him anyway. And then you could be with me. I'll leave Marybeth."

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it. "But we'll be destitute!"

"No, we won't." He seemed genuinely offended by the suggestion. "I have my store. And you could find something as well. We won't be destitute."

Sometimes I believed Russell and I were made for each other, two broken souls tangled together in a forbidden embrace. But other times, he said things like that — so naive, so practical — and I felt a cold distance between us. He didn't understand what it was like to taste wealth and then have it ripped away. He didn't understand the life I deserved.

So for now, I was waiting. I was biding my time. Once Douglas and I divorced, that was it — I would have no claim to his money. None. So every single day, I crossed my fingers and silently prayed for a miracle. Not the good kind. The kind where Douglas, while walking down the street, gets hit by a bus. These things happen all the time in the city. Why not to him? Why not to my husband?

"If only he would die," I muttered, almost to myself. "You'd think with the amount of greasy food he eats, he would have dropped dead of a heart attack by now."

Russell frowned. "He's only forty-two."

"Men die from heart attacks all the time in their forties," I pointed out. "Douglas even takes medication for his heart. It could happen."

"Hoping Douglas has a heart attack isn't a solid plan for the future," Russell said, and I could hear the doubt creeping into his voice.

He didn't enjoy fantasizing about Douglas's death the way I did. But that was only because he didn't know Douglas like I did. He hadn't endured the ice-cold cruelty, the manipulative games, the years of feeling like I was dancing on the strings of a puppet master. If he had, he would've understood: death was the only mercy Douglas deserved.

"There must be a way out of this prenup situation," I said, my voice turning firm. "Douglas is being a sadistic asshole, and he needs to pay for the way he's been treating me. There should be some way to punish husbands who treat their wives this way. Cutting off my money, threatening to take my home away... That's basically abuse."

As soon as the word *abuse* left my lips, something tugged at the back of my mind. A memory, half-buried in the dusty corners of my brain. My friend Audrey had told me a story ages ago, something about a housekeeper — a woman who advocated for women who were treated badly by their husbands. "She's hardcore, believe me," Audrey had said with a knowing smile. "If she thinks a guy is hurting a woman, she will do pretty much anything to make it stop."

I closed my eyes, trying to summon the woman's name. It hovered just out of reach, teasing me, until finally it surfaced like a cold, glistening stone:

*Millie.*

My heart began to race. Douglas wasn't terrible in the same way as Ginger's husband — I vaguely remembered that story now. That man had been physically abusive, a monster in every sense of the word. But Douglas? He was evil and manipulative nonetheless. He was strangling me slowly, financially, emotionally. Abuse wasn't necessarily only physical, was it? Wasn't my husband throwing me out of my own home and leaving me penniless just as abusive as breaking a bone? In some ways, it was worse — it was a slow, agonizing death.

Would this cleaning woman agree? I didn't know. She might need a little persuading.

But what if she saw a man treating me terribly, and she believed him to be my husband? Of course, it couldn't actually be Douglas, because he was actively avoiding me. And Douglas would never physically lay a hand on me, even if I provoked him, no matter how much he despised me. But this Millie person didn't know who my husband was. Douglas had meticulously swept the internet clean of any photographs of himself. If Millie saw a man slapping me around, she would be motivated to help me. If what he did was bad enough, I wouldn't even be able to stop her.

Slowly, a plan began to form in my head. A wicked, dangerous, brilliant plan.

**A few weeks earlier**

When I look at myself in the mirror, I almost scream.

My face is a nightmare of blossoming purple bruises, angrily blooming across my cheekbone, my forehead, my jaw. Some are already fading into sickly yellows, while fresh ones still glow with deep crimson and violet. It is painful to gaze upon — but that's the point.

Russell watches me put the final touches on my cheekbone, and a small smile tugs at his lips. He seems genuinely impressed.

"You're a magician, Wendy," he tells me, stepping closer. "It looks real."

I spent hours practicing. I watched several YouTube tutorials, endlessly rewinding and pausing until I mastered the art of shading and blending. Now, I am one of the world's experts on creating realistic-looking bruises. And truly, this masterpiece looks like somebody gave me a substantial beating.

I hope Millie appreciates the work that went into this.

For the most part, she does. Millie seems to be truly buying into our little act. She looks at me with those worried, empathetic eyes, and I can see the pity swimming in them. It's almost too easy. And aside from that, she's an excellent cook and housekeeper. She's even managed to find me some cucamelons — my favorite. What a sweet thing.

It's a shame what's going to happen to her.

But there's no other way. I've made my choice. I've set the wheels in motion.

And soon, Millie will do what she does best — she will try to save the poor, abused woman in front of her.

She just doesn't know that when she acts, she'll be walking straight into my trap.

What a chapter, right? The sheer cold calculation here is chilling. Wendy is no longer just a victim of a cruel husband — she's becoming a puppeteer, twisting reality and using an innocent woman's kindness as a weapon. The fact that she feels only a flicker of guilt before shrugging it away makes her transformation all the more terrifying. And that final line — *there's no other way* — sends a clear signal that once Wendy sets her mind on something, she will follow through, no matter the cost.

Watching this plan unfold, knowing how it's going to end, is both fascinating and horrifying. I give this chapter **⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars**.

Now, what's next? Well, Millie is walking right into Wendy's trap, and the stage is set for a shocking confrontation. But will Millie truly become the fierce, avenging housekeeper Wendy hopes she'll be? Or will she see through the disguise, or perhaps surprise Wendy with a plan of her own? I have a feeling Millie is not as naive as she seems — and when she finds out she's been used, the tables might turn in a way Wendy never expected.
