# Chapter 6: The Folded Laundry and the Eye in the Crack
Hello everyone, it's me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 6 of *The Housemaid's Secret*. And oh, what a chapter this is! If you thought the strange locked room and the mysterious Mrs. Garrick were unsettling before, just wait until you see what Millie discovers in the laundry hamper. Trust me, you are not ready.
When Millie steps back into that breathtaking penthouse apartment, she still can't get over the sheer wealth on display. Every surface gleams, every piece of furniture looks like it costs more than everything she has ever owned in her entire life. As she takes it all in, she feels a little out of place. Most of her own furniture came from the curb outside her apartment building, so standing in this palace of marble and polished wood is a jarring contrast.
Her eyes fall on the mantel above a fireplace that must be a faux one. There, lined up neatly, are half a dozen photographs. Each one features the same couple: Douglas Garrick and a stick-thin woman with long auburn hair. There they are on a ski slope, in formal attire, in front of a cave. Millie studies the woman, guessing this must be Wendy Garrick. She wonders if she'll ever meet her, or if Wendy will stay locked up in that room every single time she comes over. To be honest, Millie doesn't really mind either way. She's cleaned for plenty of clients she never once laid eyes on.
But then, a loud thump echoes from upstairs.
Millie jumps away from the mantel, her heart pounding. She doesn't want anyone to think she's been snooping. That would be a terrible first impression. She looks up at the stairs, but nobody is there. No footsteps. No movement. Just silence again.
She decides to get to work. Douglas had pointed out the wicker laundry hamper in the master bedroom, so Millie heads up the polished wooden stairs and into that massive, luxurious room. Inside the walk-in closet, she locates the hamper. She opens it, ready to toss a load of laundry into the washer.
And that's when she freezes.
In all her years cleaning other people's homes, she has seen a lot of crazy things. Clothes scattered in circles around a missed hamper. Stains of every kind: chocolate, oil, even a few she's pretty sure were blood. But this... this is something entirely new.
All the dirty laundry is folded.
Neatly. Precisely. As if someone took the time to fold every single item before tossing it into the hamper. Millie stares at it, trying to make sense of it. Maybe this is clean laundry that needs to be put away? But no, this is the dirty laundry hamper. Why would anyone fold dirty clothes? It's unsettling in a way she can't quite explain.
She grabs the hamper anyway and hauls it out of the master bedroom, heading down the hallway toward the washer and dryer. But as she passes the guest bedroom, she notices something: the door is cracked open. A sliver of light, a gap she hasn't seen before.
"Mrs. Garrick?" she calls out.
She squints through the crack. And there, just barely visible in the shadows, is a green eye. Staring right at her.
Millie's breath catches. She shifts the weight of the hamper and tries to smile. "I'm Millie. I'm your new cleaner."
She sets the hamper down and starts to walk toward the door, hand outstretched, ready to introduce herself properly. But before she can get even halfway there, the crack vanishes. The door snaps shut with a sharp click.
Okay, then.
Millie stands there in the hallway, awkward and alone. She tries to rationalize it. Some people aren't social. Some people especially don't want to talk to the cleaning staff. But couldn't Wendy have at least said hi? Just a quick greeting so Millie isn't left standing there like a fool?
Then again, it's Wendy's house. And Douglas told her Wendy has an illness. Millie doesn't want to bully her into meeting. Still, she considers knocking on the door and simply telling the woman her name. But no—Douglas was very clear. Don't bother her. So Millie won't. She'll finish the laundry, make dinner, and get out of there as quickly as she can.
But as she picks the hamper back up, she can't shake the feeling that something is very, very strange about this household. Folded dirty laundry. A wife hidden behind a closed door. An eye, watching her from the shadows. This is no ordinary cleaning job. And Millie can't help wondering what she's just walked into.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**
Okay, I have to say, this chapter gave me the chills! The image of all that dirty laundry folded so neatly is absolutely creepy and bizarre. And that green eye peeking through the door? I literally gasped. Freida McFadden knows exactly how to build suspense with small, ordinary details that suddenly feel terrifying. Millie's voice is so relatable and grounded, which makes the strange events even more unsettling. I loved the way the chapter makes you feel her discomfort and curiosity growing at the same time. This is masterful domestic suspense.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars
**Next Chapter Prediction:**
I predict that in the next chapter, Millie will uncover more strange rules and obsessive instructions that suggest Wendy has been controlling every aspect of the household—even from her hidden room. Perhaps Millie will start to suspect that something darker is going on, like Wendy not being ill but trapped, and that green eye was a silent cry for help. I also think the folded laundry might be a clue that Wendy's meticulous touch is still everywhere in the house, or perhaps that someone is trying to hide something far more sinister.
