Millie is sitting with Enzo, trying to make sense of the chaos swirling around her. The police are saying terrible things about her—things that make her blood boil. Wendy told them Millie was having an affair with Douglas. Can you believe that? Millie can’t. It makes no sense at all, and yet the police twisted every little detail to make it look like she was sneaking into that apartment for a secret rendezvous. She’s furious, but she tries not to take it out on Enzo. He’s the only one on her side right now.

Enzo nods slowly, his dark eyes steady. “I told you they are dangerous.”

“You said Douglas Garrick was dangerous,” Millie counters.

“Same thing,” he replies.

But Millie shakes her head. “Not the same thing.” And then she drops the bombshell that’s been rattling around in her brain since she watched the news. “When I was watching TV just now, I realized something. The man who hired me—who called himself Douglas Garrick—he’s not the same man on the news. He is somebody entirely different.”

Enzo stares at her like she’s just told him the sky is green. And honestly, Millie doesn’t blame him. She knows how insane it sounds. But the more she thinks about it, the more certain she becomes. That man in the apartment, the one she worked for, the one who terrified her and made her feel so uneasy—that was not the real Douglas Garrick. So then… who was he? And where was the real Douglas while this imposter was walking around his penthouse? Who is the man she murdered?

Enzo is quiet for a moment. Then he speaks slowly, like he’s testing the waters. “So I will tell you something interesting. When you told me about the Garricks, I went to look them up. And you know what? That penthouse in Manhattan is not listed as their primary residence.”

Millie’s jaw drops. “What?”

“Yes, it is true. This apartment is just extra for them. Their primary residence is a house on Long Island. Well, they say it is a house. It is probably more like a mansion.”

And suddenly, the puzzle pieces start clicking together. If the real Douglas Garrick actually lived on Long Island, then it would be so easy for two other people to pretend they were living in the Manhattan apartment. The real Douglas would never even know. Millie feels a rush of hope—maybe she isn’t crazy after all. She looks at Enzo, her voice trembling. “So… you believe me?”

Enzo looks almost offended. “Of course I believe you!”

But Millie knows she still has to tell him the rest. She wipes her sweaty hands on her jeans, her heart pounding. She has to admit what she did. “The night that Douglas was killed—or whoever that man was—I saw… well, I thought I saw him trying to strangle Wendy. Someone was trying to strangle her in the apartment. And he wouldn’t stop. So I got their gun and I… I shot him. To make him stop.”

The words hang in the air like smoke. Millie has never been much of a crier, but today she’s already broken down once, and now the tears are coming again. Enzo reaches for her, and she sobs into his shoulder. He holds her for a long, long time, letting her cry it all out. When she finally pulls away, there’s a damp stain on his T-shirt.

“Sorry I ruined your shirt,” she mumbles.

He waves a hand. “It is just a little snot. No big deal.”

Millie drops her eyes. “I just don’t know what I’m going to do. The police think I killed Douglas Garrick, and even though I know I didn’t… I shot somebody that night. Somebody is dead because of me.”

But Enzo doesn’t agree. “That is not certain.”

“Of course it is!” Millie insists.

“You think you killed someone,” he points out gently. “But after you shot him, you went home. Did you check and make sure he is dead? Not breathing? No pulse?”

Millie hesitates. “I… Wendy said he didn’t have a pulse.”

“And we believe Wendy?” Enzo’s voice is calm, almost dangerous.

Millie blinks at him. “There was blood, Enzo.”

“Was it blood though? Is easy to fake blood.”

She frowns, thinking back to last night. It all happened so fast. The gun fired, the man went down, and then there was all that blood spreading under his body. But she never actually checked him. She’s not a paramedic. After she shot him, all she wanted to do was get out of there as fast as she could. And now, for the first time, she has to ask herself: was any of that real?

“She tricked me,” Millie gasps. “She completely tricked me.”

All that time, she was feeling sorry for Wendy. She was trying to protect her. And meanwhile, Wendy was telling anyone who would listen that Millie was having an affair with her husband. That’s why Amber Degraw was grinning at her when she brought up Douglas Garrick on the street. That’s why the doorman kept winking at her. Nobody knew that Millie was never alone with Douglas—because he was coming in through the back entrance, where there is no doorman and no camera. No, not Douglas. She never even met the real Douglas Garrick. She has no idea who that other man was.

Millie looks up at Enzo with fire in her eyes. “Where is Wendy’s house? I need to talk to her.”

But Enzo shakes his head. “You think you can go over there? There are one million reporters around her house. And she will not talk to you anyway. If you go there, it will just be more trouble.”

Millie knows he’s right, but it’s still so frustrating. After everything Wendy did to her, she just wants to look her in the eyes and ask why. But nothing good will come from driving over there. So she listens.

Enzo rubs his chin, thinking. “This man who called himself Douglas Garrick… do you have any idea how we can find him? This man may be easier to access than Wendy Garrick.”

“No.” Millie clenches her fists. “All I know is that his name isn’t Douglas Garrick. I have no idea who he really is.”

“Do you have a photo of him?”

“No, I don’t.”

“Think, Millie. There must be something. Maybe a detail about him that is distinctive?”

Millie shakes her head. “No. He’s just a generic middle-aged white guy.”

“There must be something…” Enzo presses.

Millie closes her eyes, trying to conjure up an image of the man who called himself Douglas Garrick. There was absolutely nothing distinctive about him—and maybe that’s why Wendy chose him. He looks just enough like the real Douglas Garrick to pass. But Enzo is right. There must be something…

And then, like a spark in the dark, she remembers. “Wait,” she says. “There is something!”

Enzo raises his eyebrows. “Yes?”

“I saw him go into a building once,” Millie recalls, her voice quickening. “He was with another woman. A blond woman. I thought she was just some woman he was having an affair with, and maybe she was. But… it was an apartment building. Either he lives there or the woman lives there or…”

“This is good.” Enzo cracks his knuckles. “We will go there and find either him or the woman. Then we will get the truth.”

For the first time since Detective Ramirez was interrogating her at the police station, Millie feels a spark of hope. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance she’ll come out of this with her freedom intact.

Later, Enzo helps Millie clean up her apartment. It looks like a hurricane hit after the police search. Thankfully, it’s just two rooms, so despite the mess, it doesn’t take that long. Mostly, Millie is grateful for the company. It would be so depressing to clean this up all by herself.

“Thank you for doing this,” she tells Enzo for what feels like the hundredth time as they put back the clothes from her dresser drawers that are now flung all over the room.

“Is no problem,” he says.

As Millie drops a shirt into the laundry hamper, she notices something. The hamper isn’t as full as it seemed yesterday. She sifts through the clothing—something is missing.

They took the clothing she was wearing last night.

Millie chews on her thumbnail, trying to remember the shirt and jeans she stripped off before falling into bed. There wasn’t any blood on them—she’s pretty sure. But what if there were little microscopic particles that will be found on testing? That seems possible. Although, if Enzo’s theory is correct, there never was any blood at all.

The truth is still out there. And for the first time in a long time, Millie dares to hope that she might find it.

### Reader's Impressions & Star Rating

Oh, this chapter was an emotional rollercoaster! I loved seeing Millie finally piece together the truth—that the man she worked for wasn’t Douglas Garrick at all. The way Enzo gently challenged her assumptions about whether she actually killed anyone was brilliant. It gives us such a huge glimmer of hope, but also leaves us with so many questions. What really happened in that apartment? Was the blood fake? And who is the mysterious man pretending to be Douglas? McFadden keeps cranking up the suspense, and I am absolutely hooked. The ending with the missing clothes is such a clever little cliffhanger—just when Millie thinks she might be safe, the police might have evidence against her. Fantastic chapter!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

### Next Chapter Prediction

Now that Millie and Enzo are going to track down the apartment building where the fake Douglas was seen with a blond woman, I predict they’ll find the woman—and she might be the key to everything. Maybe she’s Wendy’s accomplice, or maybe she has proof that Wendy planned this whole fake murder scheme. Either way, I think this new lead is going to put Millie one step closer to the truth. But with her clothes taken by the police, time is running out. The next chapter could bring a major breakthrough—or another devastating twist!
