It was barely eight in the morning, and Millie and Enzo had already been camped out across the street from that mysterious brownstone for two long hours. Their eyes were glued to the building’s entrance—the only way in or out, they hoped. The problem was, there were plenty of residents coming and going, but no sign of the mystery man. That man Millie supposedly killed. And no sign of the blond woman either.

Millie was a nervous wreck. She was terrified that any moment a police car would pull up and she’d be arrested for a murder she didn’t commit. Even though Enzo believed her—really believed her—he didn’t know what the mystery man looked like. The only person who could identify him was Millie herself. That was the weight pressing down on her chest.

Around ten minutes ago, Enzo had announced he was hungry. He slipped into a Dunkin’ Donuts across the street, and when he came out, he was juggling two cups of coffee and a small brown paper bag. He handed Millie a cup. She took it gratefully, even as her stomach churned at the thought of food.

“What’s in the bag?” she asked.

“Is bagels,” Enzo replied in his charming, broken English.

“Ugh,” Millie groaned. Just thinking about chewing made her nauseous. “I’ll pass.”

“You must eat at some time,” he insisted gently.

“Not now,” she whispered, peering through her sunglasses at the brownstone. “Not until we find him.”

She couldn’t take her eyes off that building. If she blinked, she might miss them. If she missed them, she would never find the mystery man. And then her life would be over. Enzo would keep trying to help her, but he couldn’t do this alone. Only she could recognize that face.

The silence stretched. Then Enzo spoke, softer now. “So… last night... it was good, yes?”

Millie took a long sip of coffee, feeling heat rush to her face. “I can’t focus on anything right now, Enzo.”

His gaze dropped. “Oh. Yes. I know.”

But then she added, quietly, “But yes. It was good.”

A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Then his voice grew serious. “I missed you so much when I was gone, Millie. I am so sorry for that. I do not regret being back home in Italy for my mother, but I did not want to have to choose between the two most important people in my life. I wanted you to wait, but I could not ask that.”

Millie hung her head, guilt curling in her stomach. “I should have waited.”

Enzo opened his mouth to respond, but before any words could come out, Millie grabbed his arm. Her fingers dug in hard.

“That’s her! That’s the woman!”

Across the street, a blonde woman in a knee-length skirt and a blazer was exiting the brownstone. Millie’s heart slammed against her ribs. The face matched. The hair color matched, even if it was styled differently now. It had to be her.

“You are sure?” Enzo squinted through his sunglasses.

“Pretty sure,” Millie breathed. She hadn’t seen anyone else even close—but what if she was wrong? What if this was just some random woman going to work? There was no time to second-guess.

The woman adjusted her purse strap and crossed the street. Millie braced herself to run after her. But then, Fate took a strange turn. The woman walked straight into the Dunkin’ Donuts that Enzo had just left. Judging by the line inside, she’d be in there for at least ten minutes.

Enzo cracked his knuckles, a sly grin forming on his face. “I will go talk to her.”

“You?” Millie stared at him. “What are you going to say?”

“I will think of something.”

“So you think you’re going to approach her in Dunkin’ Donuts and she’s just going to tell you everything?” She rolled her eyes.

Enzo placed a hand on his chest, feigning offense. “Yes! I am very charming!”

Millie couldn’t help but roll her eyes again, but he ignored her skepticism. He squeezed her arm, handed her the paper bag full of bagels, and said, “You watch, Millie. I will find out everything.”

Then he was gone, crossing the street with the confidence of a man who had faced down death itself.

Minutes crawled by. Enzo was taking forever. Millie paced on the sidewalk, her anxiety shooting into overdrive. He’d told her to stay across the street, but after ten minutes of standing there, she couldn’t take it anymore. She had to know what was happening.

She crossed the street to Dunkin’ Donuts. The storefront was all glass, so she could easily peer inside. At first, she didn’t see them at all. Her eyes scanned the crowd, panic rising. Then finally, she spotted them at the far end of the store, near the pickup counter.

They were talking together, deeply, intently. Enzo’s dark eyes were completely focused on the blonde woman’s face. Something about that gaze—that absolute focus—made Millie’s stomach drop.

Just for a moment, a twinge of misgivings twisted inside her. She had always trusted Enzo. But there were times when she wasn’t entirely sure he deserved that trust. After all, Enzo had left Italy in the first place because he beat a man half to death. He claimed he had a really good reason. But the fact remained. Then he had taken off overseas again, claiming the bad man who was after him had met with an untimely demise—without ever giving Millie any further explanation.

Standing there, watching him lean in close to another woman, Millie couldn’t fight back the uneasy feeling that maybe—just maybe—Enzo had secrets darker than she knew. And she was about to find out exactly what kind of man she had trusted with her life.

Alright, readers, that’s where this chapter leaves us—hanging on the edge of a very dangerous moment. Millie is watching Enzo talk to the blond woman, not knowing if he’s charming her for information or seducing her for reasons less pure. The trust that Millie and Enzo share is suddenly in question, and the stakes have never been higher. I honestly caught myself holding my breath while reading this. The tension between Millie’s desperate hope and her creeping doubts about Enzo is masterfully written. I have to give this chapter a solid **⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.7 / 5 Stars**.

So what happens next? My guess is that Enzo will return with some vital clues—but also with a few new mysteries of his own. The blond woman might drop a bombshell about the mystery man’s whereabouts, or she might turn out to be far more connected to Enzo’s past than Millie ever imagined. Either way, I predict the next chapter will put Millie back on the hunt, with the clock ticking louder and the danger closing in from all sides.
