# Chapter 71: The Face in the Lightning
Hello everyone, it’s me again! How are you all doing? Today I will continue to walk with you and review Chapter 71 of "The Housemaid's Secret." This is the chapter where the shadows grow long, where a dark kitchen becomes a trap, and where the person holding the knife is not the one we feared. If your heart isn’t pounding yet, it will be very soon.

The storm outside was a perfect soundtrack for the nightmare unfolding inside. The lights had gone out, leaving the penthouse swallowed by blackness, and I stood with my back against the cold kitchen counter, trembling in the dark. I couldn’t see much, but I could feel Millie’s presence only a few feet away, a dark silhouette that had become my last hope. My own survival depended on her silence.
I was desperate. I had said things I never thought I’d say, offered things I never thought I’d offer.
“I can pay for your entire education,” I whispered into the darkness, my voice cracking. “Your rent. And then a bonus on top of that. You’ll never have to worry about money again.”
I knew how pathetic it sounded. But I would have promised her the moon if it meant walking away from this alive.
Millie’s silhouette did not move. Then, slowly, she shook her head.
My stomach dropped. I swallowed my pride and let the panic take over my voice.
“I’ll tell the police I got it wrong!” I said, almost hysterically. “I’ll tell them you weren’t there at all. I was mistaken about everything.”
The words were useless, and I knew it. The police already had videotapes. Those tapes showed that Millie had never been in the apartment at the same time as the real Douglas. But Millie didn’t know that. She didn’t know the truth was already the only weapon I had left. I told myself that if I could just get out of that kitchen, I might be taken into custody, I might even go to jail forever, and that was fine. Jail meant breathing. Jail meant waking up tomorrow. I didn’t care about freedom anymore. I just didn’t want to die.
But Millie was not moved by my pleas. She took another step forward, and I instinctively tried to back away, but my shoulders hit the counter behind me. There was no escape. The dark walls of the kitchen closed in around me like a coffin.
“Please,” I begged her, my voice a broken whisper. “Please don’t do this.”
And then the sky split open.
A bolt of lightning flashed through the window, illuminating the room with harsh white light. My eyes darted to the counter, searching for anything I could use as a weapon, but there was no time. In that fleeting brightness, I finally saw the face of the woman moving toward me.
She held a knife in her right hand.
The blade glittered like an accusation.
And then I realized something worse than death.
*Oh, Jesus Christ.*
It wasn’t Millie.
It never had been.
The silhouette I had been bargaining with, the woman I had been begging for mercy, was not the person I thought she was. The face I saw in the lightning was someone I knew. Someone I had underestimated. Someone whose secret I had carelessly trampled on without ever looking twice.
The face was proof that every choice I had made had led me to this exact moment. And now, in the darkness of the kitchen, with the thunder rolling outside and the knife in her hand, there was nowhere left to run.

### Reader’s Impressions & Star Rating
Oh my goodness. This chapter is a gut punch. The tension builds so slowly, pressing down on you until you can’t breathe, and then that final reveal hits like the lightning itself. I loved the way the author plays with shadows and silence to fool both the narrator and the reader. You think you know who is standing in front of you, but you don’t. The fear is raw, the desperation is heartbreaking, and the cliffhanger is absolutely cruel. This is exactly the kind of chapter that makes you refuse to put the book down.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars
### Next Chapter Prediction
Now that we know the woman with the knife is not Millie but the person the narrator truly betrayed, the next chapter is going to be a terrifying explosion of revenge. I predict Marybeth will reveal exactly why she killed Russell, how much she knows about the narrator’s lies, and why she came for her tonight. The question is whether Millie will appear in time to save the narrator, or whether the police will burst through the door just seconds too late. Either way, the truth is about to slash through this story like a blade.
