The courtroom was thick with tension, every soul holding their breath as Judge Ruth Lycus’s cold gaze swept across the room like a winter wind. She was a woman carved from law and steel, and when she spoke, the very walls seemed to listen.

"How does the defence plead?"

Her voice, calm and unhurried, cut through the silence. Across the room, Carmela sat with a smirk curling on her lips — a woman so drunk on her own schemes she thought she was untouchable. Beside her, the hired lawyer from a neighbouring pack, Donald Rex, stood with the careful poise of a man who knew he was dancing on a knife’s edge.

"Not guilty," he declared.

Judge Ruth Lycus let the words hang in the air. Her eyes lingered on Leila and Kelvin for a moment, then finally settled on Carmela’s smug face. A brief, knowing pause — then she turned to her clerk.

"Enter a plea of not guilty for the accused. We will adjourn until 12 pm, a fortnight from today, at which time this court will reconvene. The accused will also be placed under mandatory house arrest for the period that this case will—"

"What?!" The word exploded out of Carmela like a shard of glass. She lurched to her feet, her eyes wild and wide with disbelief. "You can't possibly mean that! I had nothing to do with the death of the witch, and I'm not a threat to anyone!"

Leila couldn’t stop the smirk that tugged at her lips. How delicious it was to watch Carmela squirm beneath the weight of her own lies.

Judge Ruth frowned, slowly pushing her glasses down the bridge of her nose, her gaze pinning Carmela to the spot.

"Until that is proven, you are a suspect and have been charged with the crime. The nature of the crime is gruesome, and the mood of the pack members is an agitated one. This is also for your safety," she said, her voice unnervingly calm, before casting a pointed glance at Donald Rex — a silent order to keep his client in line.

"Nonsense!" Carmela spat, slamming her hands on the table. Her voice rose, sharp and venomous. "I will not stay under house arrest! I am the fiancée of the Alpha! There are laws that protect me! How did you even become a judge if you don’t know this?"

Donald grabbed her arm and yanked her back down into her chair, just as Judge Ruth’s gavel slammed against the bench with a thunderous crack.

"Defence," the judge declared, her eyes glowing with restrained fury, "you would do well to inform your client that she has just been held in contempt of court. She will be charged a fine of fifty thousand — and if she dares to address me or my court in such a rude and disrespectful manner again, her house arrest will be changed to full detainment. This case is adjourned."

The gavel fell again, sealing the verdict.

Leila stood, a quiet satisfaction blooming in her chest. Carmela had miscalculated. The law she was so desperately clinging to protected the Alpha’s mate — not his fiancée. The pack’s law only recognised official, blood-bound marriages. And Carmela was nothing more than a woman with a ring she didn’t deserve.

"This is your doing," Carmela snarled, her voice shaking with rage as Leila rose to leave.

Leila paused, then let out a cold, bitter scoff. She walked slowly toward the exit — and then stopped. Turning on her heel, she strode back to Carmela, her eyes burning with all the pain and fury she had swallowed for so long.

"For everything you did to my family, I'll pay you back every cent. This is just the beginning."

Her voice was ice, but behind it was a consuming fire — memories of that night, the blood, the false accusations, and the witch she never killed. A grief that had been weaponised against her by the very woman who now cowered before her.

When Leila stepped outside the courthouse, she was met by a roar.

A crowd had gathered, their faces twisted with anger and hate. Placards and cardboard signs thrust into the air, each one a knife to Leila’s heart:

**JUSTICE FOR THE PHOENIX LUNA**

**LEILA IS THE MURDERER**

**JUSTICE FOR CARMELA**

**FREE CARMELA**

"Get back inside, Leila. I'll take care of this," Kelvin said, pushing her behind him protectively. But Leila didn’t move. She couldn’t move.

"Leila is the murderer!"

"She’s a killer!"

"She did it! Yes, she did it! She killed the witch!"

The words hammered against her skull like stones. Her heart pounded — a frantic, drowning rhythm. This was the exact same scene. The exact same crowd. The exact same hatred that had flooded the village square that night — the night Tatum had given her up, thrown her to the mob like a sacrificial lamb to be beaten, molested, and locked away.

Her hands began to shake. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. The memories clawed their way up her throat, suffocating her.

The crowd pressed closer, their chants growing louder and more violent, even as a handful of warriors tried desperately to hold the line. But they were outnumbered — what felt like the entire pack was surging forward, hungry for blood.

And then—

A single, powerful voice rent the air like a blade cutting through silk. A command so absolute, so commanding, that no soul could refuse it.

**"ENOUGH!"**

Tatum.

He appeared from among the crowd, his presence instantly silencing the noise. He stepped up in front of Leila, shielding her with his own body — just as Carmela walked out of the courthouse, a smug smile curling her lips as she watched the scene unfold.

"You have disobeyed me as your Alpha," Tatum said, his voice low and threatening, each word dripping with venom. "Every single one of you. And there will be consequences. You can count on that."

A murmur of fear rippled through the crowd. Some of them stepped back, remembering the Alpha’s original order — that Leila’s name was never to be mentioned in connection with the witch’s murder. They had defied him. And the punishment for defying an Alpha was never gentle.

"Why would you say that? They’re only here to defend the truth," Carmela said, her voice suddenly soft, pitiful, practising the same fake innocence that had fooled so many.

Tatum’s eyes snapped to her like a wolf locking onto prey. He gritted his teeth, a growl peeling from his throat.

"The truth?"

He closed the distance between them in three furious strides, grabbed Carmela’s arm, and yanked the engagement ring from her finger. His movements were violent, decisive — as if ripping away a poison.

Then he turned to the crowd, holding the ring up like a trophy of victory.

"As of this day," he declared, his voice echoing across the stunned silence, "my engagement to Carmela Easton has officially been called off. There will be no wedding. I cannot have a Luna with a stained soul."

Carmela’s smug expression shattered. Gasps swept through the crowd. The pack looked on in shock, their world tilting as the woman they had believed to be their future Luna was publicly humiliated in the very moment she thought she had won.

Leila stood behind Tatum, her heart still racing, her body still trembling from the ghosts of the past. But she watched as Carmela’s face twisted, a silent promise of retaliation burning in her eyes.

And Leila knew — this was far from over.

**Reader's Impressions & Star Rating:**

Oh, this chapter was an emotional rollercoaster! Watching Carmela’s downfall in that courtroom gave me such satisfaction, but seeing Leila relive the trauma of the crowd’s hatred broke my heart all over again. Tatum stepping in and publicly calling off the engagement? *Chef’s kiss.* That moment was absolutely iconic. The tension, the raw emotion, the power shift — everything was beautifully written. I’m gripping the edge of my seat for what happens next!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 Stars

**Next Chapter Prediction:**

I predict Carmela won’t take this humiliation lying down. She’s going to retaliate with something even more desperate and dangerous — perhaps trying to sway the pack against Tatum, or plotting to visit Leila under house arrest to taunt her further. The real question is: how will Leila protect herself now that she’s trapped in her home? And more importantly, will Tatum’s renewed protection be enough to shield her from the storm that’s coming?
