Married Before Midnight

Chapter 35: Justice Served

The Carter household hummed with nervous energy as the family gathered in the living room, Ava Taylor sitting stiffly between Lillian and Emily. The recording device lay on the coffee table, a small but damning piece of evidence against Nathan Reed. Lucas leaned forward, his expression grim but determined. “Tomorrow, we end this,” he said, his voice steady. “I’ll play the recording over the school’s PA system during morning announcements. Everyone will hear exactly what kind of man Reed is.”

Ava twisted her hands in her lap, her knuckles white. “What if they don’t believe me? What if he—” Eleanor reached across and gently squeezed Ava’s trembling fingers. “No one will doubt you, sweetheart. Not after they hear his own words.”

Hannah, ever the strategist, crossed her arms. “We need to make sure the school board is there. If we just blast it over the speakers without the right people listening, Reed could spin it before they take action.” Charlotte nodded. “I can get a message to Principal Harris. Anonymous tip—something vague enough that he’ll show up but not suspicious enough to warn Reed.” Olivia, usually the peacemaker, surprised them all with the steel in her voice. “Good. And if the school doesn’t act, we go public. Newspapers, local news—whatever it takes.” Ava’s breath hitched. “I don’t want everyone knowing—” Emily wrapped an arm around her. “You won’t be alone. We’ll stand with you every step of the way.” Lillian nodded fiercely. “And after this is over, you’re staying with us.

No more going back to that house.” Ava’s eyes welled with tears, but for the first time, they weren’t from fear. “You’d really do that?” Eleanor smiled softly. “Consider it already done.” --- The next morning, Maplewood High buzzed with the usual chaos of students shuffling to class. Lucas lingered near the PA system in the administrative office, pretending to fix a loose wire while the secretary stepped out. His pulse hammered as he slipped the recording into the system. Principal Harris’s voice crackled over the speakers first. “Morning announcements will begin shortly—” Then, abruptly, the recording played. Nathan Reed’s oily voice filled every classroom, every hallway. “You know how this works, Ava. Good grades don’t come for free.” Gasps rippled through the school.

Teachers froze mid-lecture. Students exchanged wide-eyed glances. In the principal’s office, Harris shot to his feet, face purple with rage. “What the hell—?” But it was too late. The entire school heard Reed’s threats, his manipulation, the sickening way he preyed on vulnerable students. --- By noon, Nathan Reed was escorted out of the building by security, his career in ruins. The school board convened an emergency meeting, and by the end of the day, he was not only fired but barred from ever teaching again. That evening, back at the Carter house, Ava sat at the dinner table, surrounded by the family who had fought for her. Eleanor placed a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies in front of her—the same ones she’d baked for her daughters in their hardest moments. “It’s over,” Lucas said quietly. Ava picked up a cookie, her hands steadier than they’d been in months. “No. It’s just beginning.” Eleanor rested a hand on her shoulder. “Welcome home, Ava.” And for the first time in a long time, Ava believed it.
