Married Before Midnight
Chapter 65: A Bouquet of Promises
The Sunday morning sun streamed through the lace curtains of the Carter household, casting delicate patterns across the kitchen table where Olivia sat, absently stirring her coffee. The absence of a bouquet today had left her unsettled, though she refused to admit it. For weeks, Mason Lee’s daily floral deliveries had become as much a part of her routine as kneading dough at dawn. Hannah smirked as she slid into the chair across from her, flipping open a textbook with exaggerated nonchalance. "No flowers today? Maybe he finally ran out of roses." Olivia shot her a glare, but the tips of her ears burned. "I don’t know what you’re talking about." "Oh, please," Charlotte chimed in, twirling a lock of hair around her finger. "You’ve been sighing at the door every morning like some tragic heroine waiting for her knight."
Before Olivia could retort, the doorbell rang. The twins, Lillian and Emily, bolted from their seats like overexcited puppies, nearly colliding with Ava in their haste to answer it. A moment later, Emily returned, waving an ivory envelope with a flourish. "For you, Liv." Olivia’s fingers trembled slightly as she took it. The card inside was simple but elegant, the handwriting unmistakably Mason’s. Olivia, Meet me tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Wear something comfortable.
Mason Her heart stuttered. A date. An actual, planned, official date. Hannah snatched the card from her, reading it aloud before Olivia could protest. The kitchen erupted into chaos—teasing, squealing, and far too many unsolicited fashion opinions. "You should wear that blue sundress," Charlotte suggested. "The one that makes your eyes look like the ocean." "No, no, the lavender blouse!" Emily countered. "It’s soft and romantic." Olivia buried her face in her hands, laughing despite herself. "It’s not a ball, it’s breakfast. Probably." "With Mason Lee?" Lillian waggled her eyebrows. "It’s definitely a date." The rest of the day passed in a blur of nervous energy. Olivia tried to focus on prepping dough for Monday’s bakery orders, but her mind kept drifting to Mason—his quiet smiles, the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, the warmth of his hand brushing hers when he passed her a coffee.
By evening, Charlotte was packing her bag for the return to campus, the Walkman Jameson had given her tucked carefully between her sweaters. "You’re really taking that?" Olivia asked, leaning against the doorframe. Charlotte hugged it to her chest. "Of course. I need to figure out what to put on the other side." Olivia grinned. "So you are going to answer him." Charlotte’s cheeks pinked. "Maybe. If I can think of the right songs." The twins groaned in unison. "Ugh, romance," Emily said, flopping onto the bed. "It’s contagious." Ava, quieter than usual, toyed with the edge of her sleeve. "Do you think… Mason will take you somewhere nice tomorrow?" Olivia softened. Ava had been through so much—losing her parents, adjusting to life with the Carters. Her quiet curiosity about love was sweet. "I hope so," Olivia admitted. "But honestly? I’d be happy just sitting on a park bench with him." Ava smiled, small but genuine. "That’s how you know it’s real." The moment was broken by Hannah’s dramatic gasp. "Oh no. Olivia Carter has feelings." Olivia threw a pillow at her. Later, as Charlotte climbed into the car to head back to campus, Olivia leaned through the window. "Tell Jameson I said hi." Charlotte rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress her smile. "Shut up." As the taillights disappeared down the street, Olivia exhaled, pressing a hand to her fluttering stomach. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, she’d see Mason—not as the baker and the customer, but as something new. Something fragile and hopeful. She fell asleep that night dreaming of roses and whispered promises.
