The soft glow of candlelight flickered across Olivia’s face as she sat across from Mason in the most exclusive restaurant in Maplewood. The private balcony overlooked the city skyline, the stars above twinkling like scattered sugar on a dark cake. She couldn’t help but smile, her fingers tracing the rim of her wineglass. “You’ve been spoiling me all week,” she murmured, her cheeks warm. “Movie nights, picnics by the lake, now this? I’m starting to think you’re trying to impress me.”
Mason’s grin was smooth, practiced, but his fingers tightened around his own glass. “Maybe I am.” He leaned forward, the candlelight catching the gold flecks in his eyes. “Or maybe I just like seeing you happy.” Olivia laughed, the sound light and carefree. “Well, mission accomplished.
Though I should warn you—my sisters are convinced you’re plotting something. Ava even said you looked ‘suspiciously perfect’ the other day.” A muscle twitched in Mason’s jaw, but he forced a chuckle. “Ava’s sharp. I’ll have to bribe her with extra desserts.” The waiter arrived then, presenting a delicate chocolate soufflé with a dusting of powdered sugar. Olivia’s eyes lit up. “You remembered my favorite.” “Of course.”
Mason watched her intently as she took the first bite—then froze when her fork hit something hard. Olivia blinked, pulling a small velvet box from the dessert. Her breath caught. Mason was already sliding from his chair, dropping to one knee.
The restaurant seemed to hush around them, the clinking of silverware fading into the background. “Olivia Carter,” he began, his voice steady despite the storm inside him. “I know this is fast. But from the moment I met you, I knew you were different. You’re kind, passionate, stubborn in the best way—” She let out a teary laugh. “—and I can’t imagine my life without you.” He opened the box, revealing a glittering diamond ring. “Marry me.”
