The CEO and the Country Wildflower

Chapter 78: Hidden Eyes

Emelly froze in the doorway of her apartment, her breath hitching as she stared at Tony standing in her living room. His back was turned, his shoulders tense as he rifled through a stack of papers on her coffee table. "Tony?" she called out, her voice sharp with suspicion. He spun around, eyes wide. "Emelly! I—uh—was just looking for the project files you borrowed. Jane said you wouldn’t mind." Her instincts screamed that something was off. Jane would never send Tony into her apartment alone, not without warning her first. Before she could press him, her phone buzzed—Lucas’s name flashed on the screen. "Where are you?" Lucas’s voice was clipped, urgent. "At my apartment. Tony’s here—" "Get out. Now." The command was absolute. "David’s downstairs. Don’t ask questions. Just go." Her pulse spiked. She didn’t argue. "I have to run an errand," she lied smoothly to Tony, grabbing her bag. "Help yourself to whatever you need." The moment the elevator doors closed, she texted Lucas: What’s happening? His reply was instant: We found a camera in your room. Someone’s watching you. Her stomach dropped. --- Lucas’s penthouse was a fortress of tension when she arrived. Bruno and Serritary were already there, the latter pacing like a caged tiger. "Tony was in my apartment," Emelly blurted. "He was acting weird." Lucas’s jaw clenched. "He’s been acting weird for weeks. But the camera wasn’t his doing." He pulled up a security feed on his tablet—a shadowy figure slipping into her building late last night. The face was obscured, but the build matched no one she knew. Bruno crossed his arms. "Brown Group’s remnants are getting bold. First the car chase, now this?" Serritary scoffed. "Or maybe it’s your darling Linda. She’s been glaring daggers at Emelly since day one." Lucas shot her a warning look, but Emelly’s mind was already racing. If someone was watching her, they knew about her routines, her weaknesses. And worse—they knew about her connection to Lucas. --- Meanwhile, Jane cornered Tony in the office break room. "What were you really doing in Emelly’s apartment?" Tony’s usual easygoing charm was absent. His fingers tapped restlessly against his coffee cup. "I told you—files." "Bull. You’ve been jumpy for days." She stepped closer, lowering her voice. "Are you in trouble?" His hesitation was answer enough. --- That night, Lucas insisted Emelly stay at his penthouse. She expected him to be overbearing, but instead, he was eerily quiet, his migraine no doubt raging without her touch. She reached for his hand, threading their fingers together. His tension eased slightly, but his eyes remained stormy. "We’re ending this," he muttered. "No more threats. No more running." Emelly nodded, but unease coiled in her chest. Whoever was behind this wasn’t just targeting her—they were playing a larger game. And the next move was theirs.
