The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 39: Shadows and Secrets

The moment the power cut out, Emelly’s breath hitched. The only light in her apartment came from the dim glow of her phone screen, casting eerie shadows across the walls. The threatening message—"Stop digging, or you’ll regret it"—still burned in her vision. She wasn’t one to scare easily, but the silence was suffocating.

A faint tap against the window made her freeze. Her fingers tightened around her phone, thumb hovering over Lucas’s contact. She hadn’t spoken to him since their argument earlier—another clash of stubborn wills—but right now, pride was the last thing on her mind. Another tap, sharper this time. Heart pounding, she crept toward the window, peering through the blinds. A shadow shifted outside—too tall to be Jane, too deliberate to be the wind.

Then, a voice. “Emelly? You in there?” Tony. She nearly collapsed in relief, yanking the window open. “What the hell are you doing sneaking around like a burglar?” she hissed. Tony’s expression was grim as he climbed inside. “Because someone cut your power and probably bugged your door. I tried calling—no answer.” He held up a small device, its red light blinking ominously. “Found this near your fuse box. Leo’s playing dirty.” Emelly exhaled sharply. “Of course he is.” Tony’s phone buzzed. He glanced at it, jaw tightening. “Lucas is on his way. He’s… not happy.” She groaned. “Perfect. Just what I need—another lecture from His Highness the CEO.”

But when Lucas arrived minutes later, storming into her apartment with David at his heels, his usual icy composure was shattered. His gaze locked onto her, scanning for injuries before he snapped, “What part of ‘be careful’ did you not understand?” Emelly crossed her arms. “Oh, I don’t know—the part where you bark orders and expect me to cower?” Lucas’s migraine pulsed visibly at his temple, but before he could retort, David intervened. “We’ve got bigger problems. Leo’s men are tracking your movements, Emelly. This isn’t just intimidation—it’s a warning.” A tense silence settled. Then Lucas did something unexpected. He grabbed Emelly’s hand. The effect was instant. His rigid shoulders relaxed, the pain in his eyes fading. Emelly’s breath caught—not just from the sudden contact, but from the raw worry in his grip. “We’re leaving,” he said quietly. “Now.” She didn’t argue.
