The CEO and the Country Wildflower
Chapter 56: The Sabotage Plan
The tension in Lucas York’s penthouse was thick enough to cut with a knife. Emelly Clus sat cross-legged on the plush sofa, her fingers drumming against her knee as she studied the blueprint of Brown Group’s headquarters spread across the coffee table. Beside her, Tony Bright adjusted his glasses, pointing out the security blind spots while Jane Claudias paced behind them, muttering about the absurdity of their plan. “We’re really breaking into Leo Brown’s office?” Jane hissed, her voice a mix of disbelief and excitement. “This isn’t some heist movie!” Lucas, leaning against the fireplace with his arms crossed, smirked. “No, it’s better. Because in movies, the villains don’t have migraines that disappear when they hold their enemy’s hand.” His gaze flickered to Emelly, who rolled her eyes but didn’t deny the warmth creeping up her neck.
David, ever the calm presence, cleared his throat. “The real question is—how do we get the flash drive into their system without getting caught?” Emelly grinned, tapping the blueprint. “Easy. We don’t break in. We let them invite us in.” Lucas raised an eyebrow. “Explain.” “Brown Group’s annual charity gala is in three days,” she said. “Leo loves showing off. He’ll have half of Lasmington’s elite there, including York Group’s biggest clients. If we get in, we can plant the drive in their server room while everyone’s distracted.” Tony whistled. “That’s… actually brilliant.” Jane groaned. “It’s also insane. What if we get caught?” Lucas’s smirk deepened. “Then we’ll blame it on the migraines.” Emelly threw a throw pillow at him. He caught it effortlessly, his fingers brushing against hers for a fleeting second—long enough for the tension in his shoulders to ease. She pretended not to notice.
Meanwhile, across town, Bruno Halthorn was having a very different kind of problem. Serritary Jonshon, his newly wedded wife—thanks to a marriage of convenience to save her family’s crumbling empire—was currently perched on his desk, swinging her legs like a child while flipping through his confidential files. “You know,” she mused, twirling a strand of her dark hair, “if you wanted me to stay out of your business, you shouldn’t have married me.” Bruno pinched the bridge of his nose. “I didn’t marry you so you could snoop through my contracts.” She grinned. “Then why did you marry me?” He leveled her with a glare. “Because your father begged, and I owed him a favor.” Serritary’s smile didn’t falter. “Liar. You like me.” Bruno exhaled sharply, but before he could retort, his phone buzzed. Lucas’s name flashed on the screen. We need your help. Gala infiltration. Bring your wife—we might need her charm. Bruno groaned. Serritary, reading over his shoulder, clapped her hands. “Ooh, a party! I’m in.” --- Back at the penthouse, the plan was set. Emelly would pose as Lucas’s date, Jane and Tony would handle the tech side, and David would keep watch.
Bruno and Serritary would provide the distraction—something about Serritary’s “accidental” wine spill on Leo’s suit. As the group dispersed to prepare, Lucas caught Emelly’s wrist. “You’re sure about this?” She met his gaze, the usual teasing glint replaced with quiet determination. “We don’t have a choice. Leo won’t stop until he ruins you.” Lucas’s thumb brushed over her pulse point. “I wasn’t worried about me.” The unspoken words hung between them. Emelly swallowed. “Then you should know by now—I don’t lose.”
He smirked. “Prove it.” --- The night of the gala arrived in a swirl of glittering gowns and sharp tuxedos. Emelly, in a sleek emerald dress that made Lucas’s jaw tighten, looped her arm through his as they stepped into the lion’s den. Leo Brown greeted them with a venomous smile. “Lucas. How… unexpected.” Lucas’s grip on Emelly’s waist tightened. “Wouldn’t miss it.” As the plan unfolded—Jane and Tony slipping away, Serritary “tripping” into Leo with a glass of red wine—Emelly seized her moment. But just as she reached the server room door, a hand clamped around her wrist. Linda Crow, her eyes gleaming with malice, hissed, “I knew you were up to something.” Emelly’s heart pounded. The chapter ended with Linda’s triumphant sneer and the distant sound of approaching security.
