"My parents have never blamed you either. Dad said that once we start our own families, we should put our own households first. They have people taking care of them, so we don't need to worry. It's not as if we've completely neglected them.”
They still returned home two or three times a month and stayed for several days each time. It was just that, compared with Duncan's brothers who lived in Wiltspoon, Liberty and Duncan naturally spent less time with his parents.
"Your parents are very understanding."
At first, Corey was adamantly opposed to her relationship with Duncan. After Duncan's accident, Liberty had cared for him and encouraged him to get back on his feet. Corey eventually changed her mind and stopped trying to separate them.
Over time, the two women had become as close as mother and daughter.
Now, when Liberty noted that her in-laws were understanding, she was acknowledging how much they had changed.
They had done exactly what they said they would.
"Duncan, once Jiggy takes over, let's retire in Wiltspoon. We've lived in Jensburg for over twenty years, but I still feel that Wiltspoon is our true home. When people get older, it's only natural that they want to return to their birthplace.
"Wiltspoon is our home and our hometown. When we're old, we'll go back there to retire. Many of our friends and relatives are in Wiltspoon too."
Duncan squeezed Liberty's hand. "Wherever you go, I'll go. We're husband and wife. We'll always be together."
Liberty exchanged a smile with him.
This was happiness.
Near noon, Sonny received a call from his secretary, Penny.
"Mr. Brown, Ms. Flemming is here. She just entered the office building."
The Lewis & Co. branch office was not as large as its headquarters in Wiltspoon, but it was still a major company in Clearfield and had strict security.
Information was passed along quickly.
As soon as Everly's car entered the building, the security guards sent word. The message was relayed through several levels until it reached his secretary.
Everly had only just arrived, and Sonny already knew she was here.
"Got it. Wait for Ms. Flemming at the elevator and bring her in when she comes upstairs."
"Yes, sir."
Penny hung up. Sonny quickly finished the work in front of him. When Everly entered his office, he put down his pen, closed the file, and stood up He walked around the desk toward her.
A warm smile appeared on his handsome face. Penny, who had been married for many years, still felt her heart race whenever she saw him smile. Her boss was simply too handsome and charming. Fortunately he rarely came to the branch office. Otherwise she would not be able to keep her feelings under control.
"What brings you all the way here, Ms. Flemming? You could've called me if you needed something. I would've gone to see you.”
Everly was invited to sit on the sofa. When Penny asked whether she wanted coffee or tea, she replied, "Just water, please. Thank you."
Penny brought her a glass of water. Then, she went to Sonny's desk, refilled it with water as well, and placed it in front of him. After that, she left the office without a word.
"It's not about business," Everly said.
Sonny smiled. “I thought another problem had come up with the project."
Everly also smiled. "Don't worry, there's no new problem. We can discuss the original issue and work out a solution over the next few days.
"Sonny, I came to apologize. You were implicated because of what happened last night. I had the PR department issue a clarification statement as soon as I found out."
She had come because of the trending topic that morning.
Sonny did not mind. "We both had guessed this would happen. If I cared, wouldn't have agreed to your grandfather's request to go with you. Since I went, I knew what was getting into.
"You already explained everything clearly. If people still want to talk, let them. Their
mouths belong to them. We can't exactly seal everyone's lips."
