Everly looked at him. "Sonny, you really are amazing.”
She could not blame her grandfather for insisting on him and doing his utmost to matchmake her and Sonny.
He was simply too amazing, so outstanding that even Everly did not dare covet him. "Everly, you're really amazing too, truly. To me, you're really incredible.”
They dropped the formal forms of address and instead called each other by name like friends.
After locking eyes for a moment, Everly suddenly laughed. "Sonny, let's stop gushing praise at each other. We know our worth. You're the first man to praise me like that.
"I came here to apologize to you and to treat you to a meal for that. If I didn't come, Grandpa would be nagging away. This morning, he went on and on for two hours.
"It has seriously affected my work. If he weren't my biological grandfather, I would have asked security to chase him out so I could finally have some peace and quiet.
"I never knew he could be so naggy. He was basically preaching at me. It was unbearable."
Sonny could not help but laugh.
“If that's the case, if I had rejected your invite, wouldn't it be hard for you to tell him because you'd be nagged at for the whole afternoon?"
"Exactly. It's exhausting. I'm so embarrassed he won't stop trying to set us up. We don't even know each other that well, and we only have a business relationship, but my grandpa... I just feel so sorry about this."
Sonny looked at her admiringly, appreciative that Everly did not beat around the bush or try to hide her grandfather's intentions.
It was also a way of hinting at him that if he did not have such intentions, he should maintain his distance from her and avoid meeting up. He could delegate the work to someone else instead of handling everything himself as the CEO.
Well, to be fair, a very large sum of money was involved in this project they were working on together. It was important; that was why Sonny personally oversaw it. The same went for Everly.
"We can't stop him from doing what he wants to do, so we should just do what we want to do."
Everly was taken aback by Sonny's statement. After a pause, she stared straight at him.
Was he trying to say that he did not mind coupling up with her?
"Everly, why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?"
"It's not just something. I think it's glittering like gold, and it's attracting my gaze." Sonny smiled. “You're really funny when you're not being all serious."
Everly was silent. She was used to putting on a stern face and being all serious.
Before Sonny, in the face of his gentle demeanor and smile, she slowly shed her stern mask and revealed another side of her.
She was not a naturally cold and serious person.
As she grew older and with more pressure on her, she learned to mask herself with a stern face. This was especially true at work, maintaining the image of an iron lady, which allowed her to deepen her authority in the company.
This was intentional on her part. She felt that only by accumulating power, she would be able to
maintain control once her
grandfather stepped down completely.
Those old fogies in the company, were not easy to manage, and she was young, so they had differing opinions. Because it was difficult to have the best of both worlds, show had to put in more effort.
"Where are we going to eat?"
"Huh?"
Sonny chuckled, “Didn't you say you wanted to treat me to a meal as an apology?
Where are we going for lunch?"
"Let's go to Clearfield Hotel. I'm used to going there."
"Sure," Sonny replied easily.
