She had honestly believed she could earn two months' worth of living expenses in just seven days.
And now, she had worked herself to the bone for absolutely nothing?
Did she work day and night shifts just for the fun of it?
She hadn't actually been making an exorbitant amount each day, but Lex was incredibly frugal.
By scrimping and saving, that money would have easily lasted her two months.
"Just because he says he's out of town doesn't make it true. Have you tried asking your union president about the situation?"
Lex wasn't naturally social. It had taken all her courage just to message that recruiter privately in the first place.
She had eventually reached out to the president. The president checked and relayed that the guy was indeed out of town.
"Let's go find your president again."
"Let's see where he is right now."
"We'll go with you to talk to him."
Claire offered the suggestion.
Skye and Zara quickly agreed. "Yeah, we'll back you up."
Skye was furious. "This president is way too irresponsible! Someone is scamming people in his group, and he's just ignoring it?"
Lex hesitated. "But it's not really the president's fault. He even warned everyone to be careful about scams."
"I'm the one who wasn't cautious enough. If I had demanded to be paid daily, I wouldn't have lost so much."
"We still need to talk to him and explain what happened. We need to see where he stands on this."
"And what about the guy who scammed you? Has he tricked anyone else? Is he really out of town, or is that just an excuse?"
Lex pulled at her hair in frustration. "I honestly don't know if he's lying or not."
"Ask around in the group chat. See if there are other victims, and arrange to meet the president together."
Claire gave her instructions.
"Okay."
Lex sent a message in the group chat, and soon enough, someone privately messaged her saying they had been scammed too.
With Claire's guidance, Lex arranged to meet the other girl.
go
This girl's situation was somewhat similar to Lex's. Her family also held sexist views, telling her she could to college only if she paid for her own living expenses.
However, she was slightly better off than Lex. She had demanded the guy pay her
for the first day's work upfront.
After that, the guy claimed he would
pay the rest in a lump sum at the
end. Since he had paid the first day so readily and was an
upperclassman at Cabinda
University, she assumed he was trustworthy.
Because of that, she hadn't insisted on daily pay.
Who could have guessed he was a scammer?
"Let's go find the president together."
Thankfully, they managed to track him down.
He was a senior student.
He was also incredibly busy. Facing grad school applications this semester, he was already on his way out of the presidency.
When Claire and the girls found him, he was studying in the library.
"I'm really sorry about this. It's a failure on my part. If I had noticed the problem sooner you wouldn't
have been scammed." Net
"However, I did post a warning in the group telling everyone to be cautious when taking jobs and to watch out for frauds."
"You just joined the union and don't really know anyone here yet. You shouldn't have trusted someone so easily."
The student wore glasses and looked highly educated and polite.
He spoke logically and smoothly.
Even though he apologized right off the bat, his underlying message was that Lex and the other girl had been far too gullible.
If they hadn't been so careless, how could they have been scammed for so many days?
Everyone else demanded daily pay, but these two had miraculously agreed to wait a full seven days for a lump sum.
Besides, while Lex was a freshman, the other girl certainly wasn't.
"You're a sophomore now. Are you really still this naive?"
He didn't sound like he was reprimanding her, but to anyone listening, it was clear
he loved lecturing people.
A guy like this was practically built for a career in corporate management.
Anyone who could run a student union of this size was no simpleton.
But his ability to shift the blame was also top-tier.
