"I'm sorry, President. I didn't mean to cause trouble."
The older girl was much quicker to back down than Lex.
Lex just stared blankly at him, completely unsure of what to do.
"What was your name again?" Claire couldn't stand watching this any longer.
"My last name is Quinn."
President Barnaby Quinn's tone noticeably softened when he spoke to Claire.
It was obvious-Claire was gorgeous, and she carried herself with a completely different aura than Lex.
She was clearly a beautiful, wealthy underclassman, which made Barnaby significantly more polite.
"President Quinn, doesn't every student in your group have their basic information registered?"
"Are there a lot of students who got scammed?"
"Have there been similar incidents in past years?"
"Do you personally know the guy who recommended the job?"
Claire fired off a rapid string of questions, immediately making Barnaby realize she wasn't someone to mess with.
"It's exactly because people have impersonated students in the group to scam others in past years that I specifically warned everyone to be on guard."
"And I am not responsible for jobs negotiated privately."
"Unless it's a job posted directly by me or the vice president after going through our vetting process. If you take one of those and don't get paid, we take full
responsibility."
Naturally, the president took a small commission for those vetted jobs.
But it wasn't a huge cut.
The main goal was to provide a safety net.
That way, people felt secure working, and the union could operate smoothly.
Unlike Lex's situation, where she made a private arrangement and came crying to him after it went south. He couldn't possibly police every single interaction.
"I see." After getting a clearer picture, Claire had to admit the president wasn't technically in the wrong.
He only served an organizational and supervisory role; basic common sense still had to come from the students themselves.
"Then do you know the student whose account was involved?"
"I'm not asking about the scammer, but the student whose account was allegedly hijacked."
"I know him," Barnaby nodded.
"The guy you're talking about is Gavin Hayes. He's a junior."
"But he went out of town with his girlfriend for the fall break. I reached out to him earlier when I heard people were getting scammed."
Claire looked thoughtful. "Could you give us Gavin's contact information?"
"Preferably along with his major, class, and dorm room number, not just his phone number."
Qu
"I can give it to you, but..." Barnaby hesitated. "Gavin's account was hijacked. It has nothing to do
him it won't wont
do you any with
good to
bother him."
"We won't know if it does any good until we find him." Seeing Barnaby's concern, Claire offered some reassurance. "Don't worry President Quinn. We aren't here to cause
trouble."

"If this really has absolutely nothing to do with him, we won't falsely accuse him, and
we certainly won't demand compensation from him."
"But if he's the one responsible for this, we won't let him off the hook either."
Claire's last sentence carried an undeniable edge of warning.
Barnaby suspected she was subtly threatening him too.
God as his witness, he genuinely had absolutely nothing to do with this!
When he first heard a freshman had been scammed, he had been speechless.
It was one thing for a freshman to fall for it, but an upperclassman too? How did these people even pass the entrance exams for cabinda University?
"You can go look for him. He should be back on campus tonight."
Since Claire had to attend a class dinner that evening and couldn't afford to waste time, she decided to contact Gavin immediately.
Gavin had already returned to campus. When he found out the scammed
underclassmen were coming to see him, his first instinct was to refuse.
"Look, I already told you, this has nothing to do with me. Someone stole my identity."
"I'm swamped right now. I don't have time to meet you," Gavin said, his tone thick with impatience.
Claire snatched the phone from Lex. "We're waiting outside the library. If you aren't here in ten minutes, we're calling the cops."
