Richard had asked me to come.

That was the only reason I let Olivia drop me at the gate.

A gift for his grandchild, he said. Nothing that required me to stay. Nothing that required me to move back in. I told myself I could walk in, be polite, and leave.

Grayson was already there when I got out of the car.

He had pulled up only a minute before me, still in the aftermath of the game, hair damp. The second he saw me, something in his face loosened. Almost like he was relieved I was here.

“I’m happy you came.”

“I only came because your father asked,” I said. “He said he has a gift for his grandchild.”

Grayson nodded. “Nevertheless. I’m happy to see you.”

I almost answered. But then I heard an engine roaring.

Another car shot up the driveway. I frowned. Whoever it was, they were driving like they were pissed.

Lily got out of it like the vehicle had personally offended her.

Suitcase. Airport clothes. Phone still in her hand. She started shouting before the door had fully shut.

“Do you take me for a joke?” Her voice ripped across the yard. “You wait until I was out the country to tell the world she is still your wife? You have been mistreating me for her since the day she walked into this house-”

She fell silent when she realized I was also present, a look of resentment crossing her face. I could see the anger in her eyes. She hated me.

She pointed in my direction. “You need to leave. Now. This is between Grayson and me. In case you haven’t noticed he loves me. While you were gone, we’ve slept together every day—”

My heart squeezed tightly at her words. I could not pretend that did not hurt.

Grayson stepped in front of me so fast I only saw his back.

“That’s a fucking lie.” He growled then turned to me wide-eyed. “I swear, we didn’t.”

I didn’t know if I could believe him. They’d been seen kissing everywhere. Why wouldn’t he have slept with

her?

“We need to talk,” he told her. “I know you’re upset but please don’t take this out on Blair. Be angry with me. Not her.”

Lily chuckled. “So, Grayson, how’s this going to work? Are you planning to keep me as your secret fling while Blair is the wealthy girl you parade around in public? Honestly, I can’t see why you’d be interested in someone like her-it’s got to be the money.”

“I’m sorry I hurt you,” his voice was weary. “I feel terrible about how I handled everything, but my heart belongs solely to Blair. It has nothing to do with money or the debt I owe her father, even if that’s how it started. I love her-I truly do-and I can’t change that. She’s the one for me, the only one. It wouldn’t be fair to everyone involved if I kept pretending I wanted to be with you. I only want Blair. I don’t want to hurt you, Lily, but I can’t keep pretending. I’m sorry. Please, after all our years together, try to understand.

Lily let out a loud, piercing scream that echoed around us. I winced and instinctively covered my ear.

Something left her hand-phone, keys, I did not see what else, and Grayson caught it out of the air before it could reach me.

Another thing followed. He knocked that aside too, arm thrown out, body still blocking mine.

“Be careful!” he shouted. “Blair is pregnant with my baby.”

Lily froze mid-motion, chest heaving, staring at my stomach as if the jersey at the game had been hiding a weapon underneath.

Her eyes widened in shock. “Pregnant? She’s actually pregnant. Grayson? How could you do this? Now it all adds up. You’re only with her because you knocked her up. You probably think she’d keep the baby from you if you divorced her. You feel like this is your only option, but that’s not the case.”

Then she burst out laughing hysterically, saying, “I get it now. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We can work with this. She can be our surrogate. When she gives birth, we’ll keep the baby and raise it as our own. We can make it work.”

I stared at her in horror and disbelief. She couldn’t be serious. Take my baby and raise it without me? Was she crazy?

“Are you freaking insane?” I asked her, finally speaking up.

I didn’t think it was my place to say anything since it was between her and Grayson, but I couldn’t stay quiet when she said stuff like that.

Without warning, she suddenly began shouting a series of harsh insults at me, her face flushed with anger. As she lunged towards me, attempting to harm, I instinctively raised my hand and slapped her hard across the

face.

Grayson grabbed her before she could try to hit me again.

“Are you just going to let her get away with slapping me?” she demanded from him. “Let me get to that whore! She thinks she can steal you from me by intentionally getting knocked up. She can think again!”

“I can’t do that.” Grayson growled, I could see he was getting impatient now. “Did you hear the part that I said she is pregnant? Stop trying to harm my wife!”

“She’s the reason my life is falling apart!” she screamed. “Let me go!”

Grayson glared intently at her, his jaw clenched with restrained fury. “I hate to do this to you, but I’m trying to stay very fucking calm. However, you’re making it exceedingly difficult by attempting to harm my pregnant wife. If you continue down this path, we’re going to have a serious problem,” he warned sharply.

Her eyes widened, “so you’re threatening me for her now?”

He sighed deeply. “Lily, I can’t see you anymore. I’m truly sorry, but you need to leave-completely out of my life. For good. I also need you to return the keys to my house.”

She gaped at him, her eyes wide with horror and disbelief, her breath catching as shock flooded her face. “So you’re not just leaving me for her, but you want me out of your life for good? All those years we shared, and you simply want to cut me out completely? Is that what this is?”
