Chapter 191

Charlotte had fallen asleep.

I had stayed on the floor until my legs went numb, then moved to the couch in the living room.

Her door was open. I kept it open in case she called for me at any point in time. I knew Charlotte better than anyone. I knew how she got when she had alcohol. Tomorrow she’d spend most of the day in the toilet puking her life out. I’d have to go out and get things to help with her hangover.

I opened my eyes when I heard footsteps and was shocked to see her wide awake and moving towards me

“Char-”

All of a sudden she threw herself into my arms. I went back against the couch with her on top of me.

What the fuck?

I caught her so she would not hit the floor. Hands on her waist. Her knees either side of my hips.

Hair in my mouth.

“Char-”

She buried her face in my neck and sniffed.

“You smell so good,” she murmured, like she had been waiting to say it.

I froze.

My heart started to race.

That was not normal for me. Hearts did not do this. Not for a girl who was your best friend.

My heart never beat like this for any of the girls I’d slept with. And if I was being honest, not even for Olivia.

That little detail terrified me. This was Charlotte. My best friend. I never looked at her like a girl, not really. She was just Charlotte, the girl who meant a lot to me.

The person who checked on me every minute of every day and threw water in my face when I upset her, roasting me every chance she got.

And now she was the girl I had just carried away from Marco because drinks made her someone I had to protect from my own brother.

That was stupid. I knew Marco would never take advantage of her. My brother was more of a gentleman than I was. Still, for some reason, I hated seeing the two of them together. I felt like my brother should have known not to cross that line with her.

She nuzzled closer.

I held still because moving felt like a decision I was not qualified to make at this hour, in this city, with her breath on my throat.

“You looked for me first,” she said against my skin. “I like when you do that.”

I froze.

She liked when I looked for her? I swallowed hard. Charlotte has never spoken to me like this/before. It felt strange…in a good way.

It also made me nervous for some reason. Fuck? Why was I nervous? I’d had many girls this close to me. None of them ever made me feel this way. What the fuck was going on with me today?

First I thought I just needed sex. That’s why I looked for a girl right after the win. Because hugging Charlotte had felt too good and suddenly I was imagining squeezing her boobs and her ass and knew something was wrong. I thought sex would fix that. Clearly, I was wrong.

“You’re drunk.”

“Mm. Not really. Your scent is so good it makes me dizzy.”

I froze.

Fuck.

Why was she making my heart race this much?

I should have set her back. I should have put her in the bed and sat in the kitchen until morning.

Instead, I kept my hands where they were so she would not fall.

The shock did not want to leave me. This was all very new. Charlotte and I never had moments like this. Then again, I never let her get this drunk around me. I always took the alcohol away before it got to this point.

“Charlotte, I think it’s time to go back to your bed,” I whispered gently. “You need your rest. You’re not going to like yourself in the morning.”

“No.” She pouted as she leaned back to look at my face.

Damn it.

Since when did she look this irresistible?

I was trying to figure out my own thoughts when she did the one thing I never expected.

She leaned forward and kissed me.

I froze. Immovable as stone. Unable to get my body to react in time to the kiss.

It wasn’t a peck. Not at all.

She had her mouth on mine like she had been starving for it and the alcohol had finally given her permission.

The Hockey Captain’s Unwanted Wife

A small sound formed in her throat that I felt more than heard.

cock reacted to it. The damn thing was ready again.

She’s your best friend, you idiot. Your drunk best friend. Stay the fuck down.

I kept my hands on her waist. Felt her weight in my lap.

Charlotte was kissing me in a Monaco suite after I had carried her away from my brother and shut the door.

My brain went blank, then too loud.

It was suddenly replaying our day. The hug in the garage. The empty room. The corridor with her and y brother.

All of it stacked under her mouth and I still could not move.

Kissing her back felt wrong. Because she was my best friend. My drunk best friend.

I did not push her off. But I did not deepen the kiss either.

Then another thought entered my head.

Did she think she was kissing my brother? She’d just came back from what seemed like a date with him. I heard her say for herself that she wouldn’t mind dating him.

Did she think it was him?

That thought pissed me off as I finally stopped the kiss.

I sat there with my heart pounding for a different reason now, staring at her swollen lips.

Her eyes were bright and unfocused and happy in a way that made my chest hurt. She definitely thought it was him.

“Char,” I said again, trying to hide my anger. “Sleep.”

She tucked her face into my neck like the kiss hadn’t happened.

I held her close and listened for any signs that she’d finally fallen asleep. When she did, I still held her against me.

I did not sleep. Not even for a second.

I stared at the harbor and held her so she would not slide off the couch, and I knew with certainty that my body was going to ask me a question I had been avoiding since she mentioned Marco’s name in a parking lot.

I still did not have an answer.

I only had her weight in my lap, and a win that no longer felt like the biggest thing that had happened in Monaco.
