Chapter 192

I woke up to a body under mine, which was the first problem, and I opened my eyes slowly and looked down to find Luca fast asleep with his mouth slightly open and my cheek still printed on his chest, my entire body over him.
I covered my mouth with my hand. I did not want to scream but I was very close to it.
What was I doing on top of Luca?
I shifted, and that was the second problem, because I gasped when I felt him hard beneath me, long and obvious through a dress that put me directly against him, the press of him against my panties so clear my eyes went wide.
I should move.
I really should.
But why did it feel so good? Why did I want to rub on it?
The thought arrived uninvited and unhelpful, because he enjoyed sex and the whole floor had proof, and for one stupid second I wondered whether sex with me would be so wrong when we were adults and we were here and he was-
I gasped. My hand on my mouth helped to cover the sound.
Last night hit in pieces: the wine, Marco, Luca carrying me, the couch, my face in his neck, and something after that I could not quite believe actually happened.
I screamed.
Luca jerked awake, voice sleepy and rough-“What? What’s wrong”-and then he registered the weight, the angle, my face, and I fell off the couch in shock, not a graceful slide but a full disaster of elbow and carpet with my dignity leaving the building.
“Shit.” He twisted away so fast he almost joined me on the floor. “Just give me a second.”
My cheeks were on fire. The coffee table had a front-row seat to my embarrassment. This could not be happening to me.
“Why was I on you?” The words came out too fast. “Why was 1-Luca. Why was I sleeping on you?”
“You climbed on the couch.” He kept his back to me, voice still rough from sleep. “I didn’t put you there. Just so we make that clear. I don’t want to give you any reason to slap me. I was the perfect gentleman. Maybe not perfect. But you get the point.”
“I have a room.” I sat up and pointed at the door as if I needed witnesses. “Did I talk? Oh my goodness, did I talk and embarrass myself last night? What did I say Luca? Tell me everything!”
He made a sound that was not quite a laugh. “You talked. Yes.”

“What did I say.”
Shar
“What did I say.”
He rubbed his face with his hand. “You said I smelled good.”
I wanted the ground to swallow me. “No. I did not.”
I denied that even though I had a vague memory of it.
“You said I looked for you first. That you liked that. Whatever that meant.”
I put both hands over my face, I felt like I might faint. “I will never say such a thing.”
Now he looked amused.
“This is not funny.” I snapped.
“It is a little funny.”
I peeked through my fingers and found him sitting up, still angled away, jaw tight and ears red.
There was more. Again, I had that memory but wanted to believe it was just a dream.
Still, I asked again.
“What else.”
Silence.

“Luca.”
“You were drunk.”
“What else?”
He stared at the glass like the yachts might answer for him. “Well, I don’t know if you’ll be happy to hear this. But, you kissed me. And I just want to make it clear, I did not kiss you back. You did all of it. So don’t say I took advantage-”

I had kissed him.
1
I had kissed Luca, and I had woken up on top of him with his body doing what bodies did in the morning, and I had no plan except panic.
“No no no no no.” I said.
“Will you relax-”
“I-what? No. I did not. Tell me I did not.”
“You did. I mean, I could lie to you if that’s what you want.”

“How. Like a peck? Like a thank you? Like I missed your cheek and hit your mouth by accident?” I demanded. I did in fact want him to lie to me at this point.
Why did I even ask? Why couldn’t I have done what any ordinary person would have done in this situation and pretended it didn’t even happen? That I had no memory of it. That would have been the smarter thing to do.
He glanced at me then, and something flickered through his face that was not a joke. “Not a peck.”
I made a noise I did not recognize. “I assaulted your mouth.”
“You didn’t assault anything.”
My voice went high. “I am never drinking again.”
“You said that in Bahrain.”
“Bahrain I sang like an idiot and embarrassed myself. Bahrain I did not put my mouth on you.” I stood up too fast and had to grab the table.
“We have to pretend this did not happen. We have to burn the couch. We have to-”
“Char.” He turned enough that I could see his profile, still careful with the rest of him. “It was just a kiss. No big deal. You really don’t have to worry about it. People kiss each other everyday.”
The words were meant to be kind. They hurt anyway.
Just a kiss.
No big deal.
To him it was nothing, just a little kiss. To me it was the thing I had been trying not to want since I realized
I loved him. To me it was a big deal, and he had said it like it wasn’t important
That hurt and he didn’t even realize it.
“Right,” I said, and heard how disappointed it came out. “No big deal.”
“I mean it. You were drunk. I’m not going to make it weird.”
“Good.” I walked toward my door on shaky legs. “I am going to shower.”
“Char-”
I hated when he called me like that. It always made it harder to resist him.
I stopped.
He was still on the couch, still dealing with a problem I could still feel against me if I let myself remember
“We can pretend last night didn’t happen,” he said. “If you want.”
I should have said yes. I chose to ignore it.

Instead I said, “I need the shower,” and shut the door before my face could confess that it had been a big deal, that it still was, and that pretending was going to be a full-time job.
Behind the door I leaned my forehead against it and whispered to no one in particular that I could still feel him, that I wanted to kiss him again. Only this time, I wanted to be sober.
