CHARLOTTE-

I woke up screaming into my pillow. I could not believe the nightmare that had happened to me last night.
Luca had rejected me.
The man who could not stop having sex had rejected me. Me? Charlotte? His best friend?
He’d rejected me?
How?
How could he say no like I was not good enough to have sex with? How could he turn me down so easily? I was sure he would have given in without a second thought. I mean, this was Luca. The man was always looking for women to have sex with. I said no strings attached. A one-night thing. And still he’d said no?
Last night I had been shocked and hurt. This morning I was just plain fucking mad. He had turned me down without a proper explanation, like he couldn’t wait to do it. Like saying no came so naturally to him.
I pictured him there. In his towel. Wet hair. Already naked. Clearly now out of the shower. All he had to do was drop the towel and give me one NIGHT.
He’d called it complicated. What was so complicated to him?
Then he’d turned toward the wardrobe and refused to face me while he rejected me. Like we hadn’t known each other for so many years. He couldn’t even look me in the eye. Couldn’t even do that much.
I packed the suitcase like it had been the one to reject me. Like it had been the one to call sex between us complicated. It wasn’t the only thing I’d been angry with. I’d been pelting things since I opened my eyes this morning. I could not help it.
I angrily shoved clothes. Charger. The dignity I had left. I dragged it down the stairs of Tenuta Santa Chiara and kicked it when a wheel caught on the stone, because if I did not kick something I was going to walk back into his room and say it again. Or probably throw a water bottle his way. Or demand how he could sleep with practically anyone but reject me?
Marco was at the bottom of the stairs, coffee in hand. He quirked a brow the second he saw my expression. I wasn’t exactly hiding my mood from anyone in the house. In fact, if their mother decided to be rude to me today, she would see a side of me she hadn’t seen before.
“You know, Luca is usually the one in a bad mood. Why is it you today? What did that suitcase do to you?” He asked as I kicked it for the fourth time this morning.
It was not my fault. It refused to go the way I wanted it to.
I rolled my eyes. “I had a frustrating night. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Then I blurted it anyway.
“As far as you know, Luca sleeps with every woman that throws herself onto him, doesn’t he?”

Marco looked surprised and amused at the same time, espresso paused halfway to his mouth, like I had served him a headline with breakfast. “Uh huh. Yep. He definitely does. Unless.”
“Unless?”
“Unless it’s a woman our mother wants to use to trap him.”
Well. I knew that much. That wasn’t new information to me.
“But everyone else, he just whips it out!”
“Wow wow wow.” Marco held up a hand, still half laughing, still a little horrified. “I don’t want to think about my brother whipping anything out. That’s a visual I didn’t order with the espresso
“I’m making a point.”
“Slow down. I’m not ready for that discussion. Though I am interested to know what’s gotten you this angry and why it has something to do with my brother whipping it out.”
He sipped, eyes bright with the kind of shock that wanted to become a joke. “Did he…whip something at you? Or something else? What exactly happened between the two of you?”
“Nothing.” I hissed.
Marco’s mouth twitched. “Ah. Sure. Nothing.”
“I don’t know why you chose to make him your best friend. I’m the charming one.”
He glanced at my bag, amusement fading into something more careful. “You know, I think I’ll be joining the both of you. I don’t have to stay a minute longer.”
“Sure.” I told him.
I could use a third person with us. It would help with the humiliation.
“Charlotte. What did he do?” He asked, leaning in closer, like he wanted all of the details and I was the only person that could give it to him.
“Nothing. That’s the problem.” I snapped.
He looked confused. “Okay. What the fuck is happening?”
I opened my mouth to tell him everything and Luca walked out of the corridor like he had been listening for his own name.
He saw us.
The suitcase. Marco. Mc.
His face did something unfriendly.
He crossed the foyer too fast and reached for my arm like I was a bag that might miss a flight.
“Car’s here. You should go. Traffic. Airport. Whatever. We need to move quickly.”

I narrowed my eyes and pulled my arm out of his grip.
Don’t hurry me.”
“I’m not-”
“You are.” I shoved the suitcase toward the door.
“Enjoy Valentina. Enjoy something that isn’t complicated:”
Luca paused and I didn’t get a good look at his expression as I heard his brother laugh.

Marco then looked between us, frown starting, the amusement gone. Like he realized this might be out first serious fight.
Luca’s frown was already there.
I rushed the last steps to the waiting car, face hot, dignity practically gone out the door.
Behind me the two brothers stood in the doorway, both frowning at my back, and I did not turn around to see which one looked more confused.
The driver closed the door.
I put my forehead on the seat and whispered that I was never asking my best friend for sex again.
What was I truly doing? It wasn’t like I was traveling alone. Both Luca and Marco were joining me in this car. I couldn’t exactly escape them.
