I watched Charlotte rush past me and get into the waiting car like she had planned to leave without me.
She was clearly mad.
At me.
I was not used to her looking at me like that. It bothered me enough that I stood on the steps speechless for a long time. The engine idled. Her profile in the window was pissed.
What the hell was going on? What did I do to get her to behave that way in front of me?
“What the fuck did you do to piss Charlotte off that bad?” Marco demanded. “I have never seen her act that way before. She’s usually calm and making jokes. Being funny and sweet.”
Sweet? Why was he calling my best friend sweet? I felt like punching him in the mouth for saying that.
“I really do not know.” I said instead of hitting my brother in the face.
I was confused…worried. Both.
She had mentioned Valentina. It felt like a reference. She could not be mad about last night.
That had been me doing the right thing. It had to be something else.
Was it my mom? Or Valentina? Did someone say something to her that I did not know about?
“I don’t know about you,” Marco said, “but I would fix it as soon as possible. You practically rely on Charlotte to breathe. I wouldn’t want someone who did everything for me staying mad at me for long.”
It was true. Charlotte did everything for me. And she always did it with a smile. I didn’t like that she was angry at me. I wanted to fix this. As quickly as I possibly could. I could not breathe properly knowing she was upset. I’d clearly done something to offend her.
I frowned when I saw him loading his suitcase into the car.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
He smiled. “I’m going with the both of you. What does it look like I’m doing?”
We had chosen to leave while the family was at the market. Busy. They would be pissed when they got back and found the house empty. They wouldn’t expect us to leave without saying a proper goodbye.
I could imagine their anger when they returned and didn’t see us here.
Especially mom. She wanted me to take Valentina along. I was not staying long enough for that trap. We were leaving. Quickly. And I did not want the brother Charlotte thought was cute joining us on this long drive. He could find another way out of here. He didn’t need to come along with us.
“Get your own car,” I snapped.

“Fuck no.” He said. “I want company. And I definitely want to know what caused the argument. I’m coming. Try and stop me.”
I could have stopped him. I could beat his ass even though he was the older brother.
Unfortunately, I was also the man who had said no to Charlotte and then watched her kick a suitcase down our stairs. I did not have a spare fight in me. All I wanted was to fix whatever it was that had her acting like this.
I also did not want Marco in a back seat with her for two hours. I would not be able to stand/it.
Marco took the seat behind the driver like a tourist. Charlotte was already buckled, staring at the hills as if they had personally done something to her. She was the same one staring at those same hills just yesterday with love in her eyes.
What the hell had happened? I needed to know and my brother in the drive with us was not helping my situation at all. I did not want him in our business.
The car pulled away from the estate.
No one spoke for a kilometre.
Then Marco had to stir the fire: “So. About Valentina.”
Charlotte’s laugh was short and unkind. “Wouldn’t Luca love to have her join us.”
“You just had to bring her up.” I growled.
“Charlotte, please tell me,” Marco practically begged. “What is it that my brother did or didn’t do to have you this way on this lovely morning?”
“Marco.” I turned enough to glare. “Stop.”
Charlotte still would not look at me. I wasn’t even sure why she was angry. The last thing I needed was her complaining to my brother about it.
Marco stretched his legs. “Relax. I’m not going to push her while you are around. The second I have her alone, I’ll know everything.”
“And who told you she’s going to ever be alone with you again after that night you got her drunk?” 1 snapped.
Charlotte glared at me as though I shouldn’t have said that.
Marco blinked at me for a few seconds before he burst out laughing.
What was so funny about this? Why was he fucking laughing? Did he want me to give him something to laugh about?
I was irritated as fuck and he was not helping the situation at all.
“Marco and I can have as much alone time as we please.” Charlotte snapped. “You do not get to tell us what we can’t or cannot do.”

Marco looked amused that she was practically scolding me now. I couldn’t believe this shit.
