I had only meant to scroll back far enough in my phone’s gallery to find an old team event, and instead the camera roll opened on Blair’s face from months ago. She was flushed from the cold arena, my hoodie drowning her frame, a cup of coffee in her hands as she waited for me.

Another swipe and it was the two of us on a balcony the summer before I made captain. Another and she was in the stands in a Vipers shirt with my number, on her feet, shouting herself hoarse.

Back then, she was always there to support me, never missing a game. She’d show up every time, often wearing disguises because I asked her to-she never complained and went along with it for my sake. Blair was always willing to agree to my every request, no matter how silly it seemed. She listened and did her best to make me happy. Thanks to her, I could focus solely on my game without any worries.

That version of her was gone. Long gone. I couldn’t find it anymore

Now when I looked up into the stands during a game, I got Blair in Blackridge jerseys, Grayson’s name big and bold. She no longer screamed my name, she screamed his.

Then she’d have interviews where she spoke about their marriage with a smile, despite what I already knew. Her marriage with Grayson would never last. She was only fooling herself.

Still, it hurt knowing that the same woman who used to belong to me, was publicly attached to the one captain I hated most, and every time the cameras found her, I felt it in my chest.

It made me sick.

I was still staring at a photo of her asleep on my old couch when Sophie’s voice cut across the room.

“Ew.”

I locked the phone too late. She was already close enough to have seen the screen, nose wrinkled, arms crossed over one of my shirts.

‘Why are you even looking at pictures of you two together?” she asked.

‘I wasn’t. I was looking for something else and I just happened to come across these pictures.”

Sophie’s eyes narrowed. I could see the suspicion on her face, she did not believe me.

‘You were looking for something else in a camera roll full of your ex? Cute. Why are those photos even there? It’s time that you delete it and make new memories with your actual wife.”

‘Drop it, Sophie.”

‘No.” She stepped closer. “If you think you can crawl back to her, or cheat on me the way you cheated on her, you can kiss your career goodbye. I mean that. I will do everything in my power to get you off the team. My father is the coach. One conversation about our marriage problems and you’ll lose your spot. In case you haven’t realized, the Monroes are no longer on your side. That means you depend solely on my father. Don’t test me.”

My jaw clenched.

Was that a fucking threat?

How could she use her father’s position against me like that? And he was simply the coach.

Blair had the real connections to end me.

Monroe-level connections. And yet, after everything-after the public marriage to Sophie, the humiliation, the accusations, Blair had never once tried to take the career away from me. She could have made a call. She could have let her father make the decisions to kick me out the team. She could have punished me in the exact language Sophie was using now.

Still, she hadn’t,

She had simply walked away, married Grayson that very week, and completely forgotten about us. She never tried to use her power to win me back, to get me to listen, or even to take revenge. She just stepped away with her head held high and moved on. But Sophie…shit. She wanted to destroy me if I didn’t do exactly what she demanded! What had I done? How could I have chosen her? I let fame and money go to my head, and now look at me.

I felt sick in a completely different way.

Sophie was still watching me, waiting for submission or a fight she could win. “Do we understand each other?”

“Yeah,” I said. The word came out rough. “We understand each other.”

She held my gaze a second longer, then scoffed and turned toward the kitchen. “Good. Delete the pictures. It’s pathetic.”

When she was gone I unlocked the phone again and stared at the fast image-Blair in the stands, my number on her chest, smiling and looking at me with so much love.

I had traded someone who loved me for someone who loved what I had to offer. And now, I was dealing with those consequences.
