I should have left when she told me to get out.

Instead I stayed. Every time I shifted toward the exit, another broken sound came out of her and held me there.
She had a right to the anger. She had a right to hate me. After all the years she’d given to me, this was definitely not the life she deserved.
Leaving while she was still in emotional distress felt like one more act of cowardice on a list that was already too long. I could not do that to her. I owed her to at least look after her.
Then out of nowhere the sound changed.
The crying stopped and turned into laughter.
I frowned.
What the hell was happening?
I paused, hand still on the edge of the door.
“Lily?”
She wiped her face with the back of her wrist and looked at me, eyes bright as though she wasn’t just in distress. “You’re so quick to ask me for space because of Blair. So ready to rearrange your whole life around feelings for her. And she doesn’t care about you at all. Pathetic.”
I froze.
What the hell was she talking about?
My frown deepened. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh my, look at that.” She laughed again. “You haven’t seen the articles yet.”
I stiffened.
Articles?
“What articles?”
She crossed the room, unlocked her phone, and shoved the screen into my face so fast that I had to take it from her to keep it from hitting my mouth.
For a second, I wasn’t sure what I was looking at. But that soon changed.

Chase.
Blair.
His hands were on her while they…kissed.

I could not believe what I was looking at. Surely this had to be a mistake. I left Blair in our bed this morning. Why would she leave to meet Chase after the night we had?
And why the fuck would she kiss him?
I was fucking losing my mind the more I stared.
Chase’s mouth on my wife! How fucking dare he?
The more I stared, the angrier I got. I told him to stay the fuck away from her.
Lily watched my face change and stepped closer. I could tell that she was enjoying this. A little too much.
“That’s the woman you needed space for,” she said loudly, like she wanted the world to hear. “That’s the woman you developed feelings for. While I was sitting here keeping every promise we ever made, she was in a park with her ex-boyfriend’s tongue down her throat. And look at her, she’s really enjoying the kiss. I can’t believe that’s the girl you wanted a break from me for. Congratulations.”
“Enough.”
“No.” Her voice rose again. “I am the only one who has actually loved you through all of this. Me. Not her. You let Blair’s soft little act get into your head and now look, she played you. She’s been playing you all along. She wants Chase. She has always wanted Chase. The only reason she crawled into your bed was to mess with your head, keep you off balance, maybe even help him get under your skin before she ran right back to him. It was always just her plan to make Chase jealous and she clearly succeeded. Now that she has him back, I’m sure she wouldn’t want anything to do with you.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Think about it,” Lily pressed, relentless. “She marries you under pressure, performs the perfect wife when the cameras are out, gets you so confused you come to my door asking for space-and while you’re gone, she’s making out with the captain of Southbay in public. Your rival. Do you know how that looks? Do you know what every rival locker room is going to say? That Grayson Shaw got played by Monroe money and a woman who never left her first choice. They’re going to laugh at you. All of them. And in sure that’s exactly what Chase wanted. She’s doing him a favor because she loves him.”
“Stop talking.”
“Why? Because it makes sense?” She pointed at the screen still lit in my hand. “She used you. She got in your head. She made you doubt me, doubt the plan, doubt everything we built since we were kids. And the second she had you where she wanted you, there she is with him again. You were a detour. A tool. A way to hurt him or control him or keep herself relevant until he came back ready to beg.”
I didn’t want to believe this. I thought I was truly getting to know Blair. The Blair I was falling for.

Had it all truly just been an act this entire time?

I had left Blair asleep in our bed and driven here to do the honest thing. I had put my feelings for her above the plans I once had with Lily. And while I was standing in this living room trying not to be a complete bastard, a camera somewhere had caught her in Chase’s arms like last night had never happened.
Lily softened her voice, moving in as though she felt sorry for me. “Come back to me. Cut her loose before she humiliates you worse than this. I warned you she still had unfinished business with him. I warned you she would hurt you. And you didn’t listen because she got under your skin. Look what it cost you. Your dignity.”
I stared at the photo one more time, unable to think about anything else.
Lily reached for my free hand.
I didn’t give it to her.
I set the phone down on her table and stormed out of the house before I started smashing things. I had to see her. Had to find out for myself if any of this was true.
Behind me, Lily called my name, I could hear the frustration in her voice.
I didn’t stop.
If Blair thought she could spend the night in my bed and then wake up kissing Chase, she was about to find out what happens to those who cross me.
