I couldn’t believe she’d slapped me in the face; the shock still vibrated through my body.

However, I had achieved what I wanted from kissing her-an opportunity to manipulate the situation.

I had intentionally called those reporters earlier, informing them that we would be at the location to ensure maximum publicity.

My goal was to find an exit from my strained marriage with Sophie and simultaneously to sabotage Blair’s marriage with Grayson.

I was concerned because they were becoming increasingly close, and I suspected feelings were already developing between them. If I wanted to win Blair back, I knew I had to act swiftly, and today, I had succeeded, news of the scandal was everywhere, spreading rapidly across social media and headlines.

The only remaining obstacle now was how to confront my wife and manage the situation with her father once he saw the articles as well.

Sophie was waiting in the living room, her face red, like she’d been cursing me out for hours. I deliberately took my sweet time coming home.

Blair had told me to stay away from her, saying there was no chance for us to get back together. But I didn’t buy it for a second, nor did I have any plans to give up on us. I had too much at stake to let her go a second time, and I was determined to win her back. I wasn’t going to give up until she accepted me again.

The second I closed the front door, a stack of printed articles hit the floor at my feet.

I stared at them with a blank expression.

Blair’s face. Mine. The park. The kiss framed in the ugliest possible crop.

I was not expecting her to print the articles out like this.

“Explain that,” Sophie said, voice shaking with rage. “Explain how you get to embarrass me like that in public and walk back into this house like it’s a normal afternoon.”

I set my keys down slowly. “It isn’t what it looks like.”

“Oh, interesting.” She laughed once, sharp. “Because it looks like my husband kissing his ex-girlfriend in a park for half the city to photograph. It looks like you making me look disposable. It looks like you forgetting who the hell you’re married to. Do you think my father is going to be happy when he learns about this? Do you even care that you’re embarrassing my family?”

“She was going through a rough time.”

“Good for her.” Sophie stepped over the papers and jabbed a finger into my chest. “That doesn’t excuse your mouth on hers. Do you have any idea what my phone looks like right now? What people are already saying? The coach’s daughter can’t keep her husband’s attention. The Vipers captain is still chasing Monroe even

though she’s married. I look like a joke, Chase.”

“I went to talk to her.”

“With your mouth?”

“She was upset. The articles about Shaw and Lily came out and-”

“And you thought the helpful response was to put your hands and mouth on her?” Sophie’s eyes flashed. “Are you serious? You don’t comfort an ex with your tongue. You don’t meet her alone in a park when our marriage is already under strain. You especially don’t do it when her current husband just fought you on national television and everyone already assumes you’re having an affair with her!”

My jaw clenched. “I made a mistake with Blair. I have been trying to own that.”

“No.” She shook her head hard. “You have nothing with her anymore. You ended all connections with her the second you married me. This is pathetic how you’re still holding onto her even though she’s clearly moved on.”

“Sophie-”

“I am the coach’s daughter,” she snapped. “I have spent months making you look like a man who belongs at the top of this organization. I have stood next to you through every camera and every event while you cried over old photos and researched her family like a man in crisis. And this is how you repay that? By giving the press a free story about you still being in love with your ex?”

“I’m not ”

“Don’t insult me.” Her voice broke. “I saw the picture. Everyone saw the picture. You looked hungry. Not confused. Not accidental. Hungry. Like you finally got close enough to take something back.”

Sophie bent, snatched one of the pages off the floor, and shoved it against my stomach. “You are going to fix this. Publicly. You are going to look like a husband who made a fleeting error, not a man caught in an affair. And if you go near her again, I will make the rest of your season a nightmare. My father already has enough reason to question your judgment after the fight. Do not give him more.”

I stared at her. There was that threat again.

“You done?” I asked quietly.

“Not even close.” She pointed at the mess of articles on the floor. “Clean that up. Then stay away from Blair Monroe. I mean it, Chase. If you want to throw your career and this marriage into the same fire, keep testing

me.”

She walked out of the room before I could answer.

Fuck!

I looked down at the photograph near my shoe. I missed her. Blair. I never should have let her go. Now I was stuck with a horrible wife who was trying to control my every move.

Sophie wanted a public fix.

Blair wanted me gone.

No. I could still fix this. I could still get Blair to forgive me. I had to.
