-GRAYSON-

Every time Chase tried to cut through the middle, I was already there. Stick in the passing lane.

The crowd thought it was rivalry intensity for the charity. It was not. It was two weeks of an empty house and the photograph of his mouth on my wife, replaying every time he touched the puck.

He had kissed her. This fucking asshole had kissed her knowing we were married. I wanted to end his life. His

career.

I told Blair I wanted a divorce because I could not stand the way that picture had made me feel. And now he was here, in front of me, skating around like he’d won.

He thought he’d gotten his way. That he’d succeeded in breaking us up. He did not know I hadn’t signed the divorce papers. How did no one realize yet that the divorce hadn’t been filed? That would be available for public records and everyone would have posted it by now if it was real.

I took the puck off him at the blue line and sent him into the glass hard enough that the crowd made a sound. The referee’s arm twitched. Still, no call. I kept moving.

“Easy, Shaw,” Callum muttered on the bench when I came off. “It’s a fundraiser.”

I did not answer. I knew I wanted to fucking end him.

Midway through the second period we met at center for a draw. Captains. Cameras. Chase leaned in across the dot with a smile that did not belong at a charity event.

“Me and Blair will be getting back together soon,” he said, low enough for only me. “You know that, right?”

My hands tightened on the stick.

The official said something. I barely heard it.

Chase’s smile widened. “She always only wanted me. You were just the rebound. She came running back into my arms as soon as she got the chance.”

The puck had not even dropped cleanly yet.

“Say another word,” I told him.

He did.

“I had her first,” he murmured. “And I’ll have her last. Funny, isn’t it? You were never that important to her. I can’t wait to spread her legs-”

I lunged.

There was no captain’s discipline in my actions. I dropped the stick and went straight through the circle,

hands in his jersey, and put him down on the ice.

The crowd instantly went into an uproar at the sight.

I could hear the whistles. Chase hit back, got a fist into my jaw, and then I was on him properly-short, ugly punches, the kind that had nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with the sentence he should never have put in his mouth.

He tried to roll. I did not let him.

Someone grabbed my arm. I shook them off and hit Chase again. Blood on the ice, on my glove, on his face. He stopped answering with the same force. His head snapped to the side and his body went slack under.

“Shaw!”

Callum and Marcus hauled at my shoulders. A Southbay player drove into my ribs. Security rushed over the boards, hands everywhere, voices barking out orders. I was still trying to get to him when they finally ripped me backward and he came into focus.

Chase was unconscious on the ice. I’d beaten him until he’d knocked out.

I watched as officials started kneeling next to him, trainers already running. The charity banners hung over the scene like a fucking joke.

People were on their feet. Phones were up. The referee’s hands were in the air, the game dead around a body that was not moving.

“Get off him,” someone shouted, even though I was already off him, held by my own teammates and two security staff who looked shocked.

Medical staff rushed through the ice. I could hear the sound of an ambulance.

Callum got in my face, helmet to helmet. “What the fuck did he say?”

I did not answer.

If I opened my mouth, I was going to say it out loud and make the night even worse.

They walked me off. Not to the bench. Toward the tunnel. Game misconduct. Behind me, they were still working on Chase. I looked back once, against every instinct that said not to, and saw them stabilizing his head.

I had wanted to hurt him.

I had done it.

The tunnel swallowed the noise and replaced it with my own racing pulse and the coach’s incoming anger, my father’s warning from a few days ago repeating in my head.

Somewhere above the glass, Blair was in a seat with her sister when she saw the man who had asked her for a divorce beat her ex-boyfriend unconscious at her family’s charity game.

Security kept a hand on my arm all the way to the locker corridor. It was like they were scared if they let go. I would finish the job.

Chase never should have used Blair’s name in his

filthy mouth.

I sat down on the first bench I reached, gloves still on, knuckles throbbing.

I knew I’d done something that would cost me a lot. The punishment would not be simple.

“Fuck.”

All because I couldn’t forget my wife. Because I couldn’t let her go even though I was the one who asked for the divorce.

I inwardly groaned. What was wrong with me? Chase had succeeded in getting me to attack him which would in turn affect my future games.

He had said he would have her last. And I wasn’t prepared for the rage I felt at hearing him say that.

For one black second on that ice, I had wanted to make sure he could not say anything else.

Now Chase was being taken to the hospital in a stretcher and I had no defense that would sound like anything other than what it was.
