Chapter 82

-BLAIR-

One second Grayson and Chase were set across the faceoff dot. The next, Grayson was through the circle and they were on the ground. Olivia’s hand grabbed my wrist. I could not look away. I couldn’t believe this was happening again. I thought since Grayson made it clear that he didn’t want to be with me anymore that he wouldn’t have a reason to attack Chase again.

I was not expecting this. Not even a little.

Seeing him out there, fighting so aggressively, it was hard to look at. I was scared that he would get himself hurt. He was already in so much trouble for past fights like this one with Chase.

What could have caused this? It’s been weeks since I signed the divorce papers, he couldn’t still be upset about

that kiss.

“They’re fighting over you,” my sister said, stunned and certain at the same time.

Over me? That was simply impossible. Chase probably said something to mess with Grayson but I didn’t think it would be about me.

“No.” I quickly diagreed. “It can’t be. He already moved on. He told me he loved Lily. Why would he fight Chase over me?”

Olivia rolled her eyes without taking them off the ice. “It’s clear he was lying that day. Look at him.”

I did.

There was nothing controlled in the way Grayson hit him. It was almost as though he didn’t even care about the rules anymore. There was no restraint.

Fighting like this constantly would surely end in a lot of serious consequences. For a captain like him, how could he not care about that? He acted like someone who’d lost the most important thing in his life and didn’t care about anything else because of it.

And then it happened. Chase stopped moving. Stopped fighting back.

I gasped.

“Is he?”

“Unconscious.” Olivia answered for me. “Damn. Grayson didn’t hold back today.”

Unconscious.

The word did not feel real until I saw the trainers rushing to get to Chase who was bleeding and still not moving.

I could not believe it.

People stood. Phones went up. Security rushed onto the ice. Olivia said my name. I was already moving.

I did not go toward an unconscious Chase.

I went in the direction that I knew Grayson would be.

I did not know why I was rushing. All I saw was the blood and I could not hold myself back. I had to make sure he was okay. Maybe after that I would try to regain control of my feelings.

Right now I needed to get to him.

“Ma’am-officials only-”

“Blair Monroe,” I said, and the security guard’s expression changed the second he heard my name.

He stepped aside. My father’s building. My father’s event. He would be stupid to not let me in.

I spun the corner into the corridor.

Grayson was on a bench while two trainers worked at his face. He looked up after hearing my gasp.

We both froze. This was the closest we’d been in a long time.

I missed him so much it physically hurt to stay standing here and simply stare at him.

There was so much tension in that look it felt like I could not breathe.

He swallowed hard.

“Give us a minute,” he told the people tending his wounds.

They hesitated, then left.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “If you’re looking for Chase, he’s in the ambulance. They’re taking him to the hospital. His injuries are worse than mine.”

He sounded almost pleased with himself that he had put Chase there. But I could also hear the irritation in his tone, thinking I was here because of Chase. Not him.

I stayed just inside the doorway. “Why did you do it?”

“Blair.”

“Why are you still fighting him?” I demanded. “We are no longer married. You asked for the divorce. You told me you wanted Lily. So why are you beating Chase unconscious at my father’s charity game? Are you looking for attention? What reason could there possibly be Grayson?”

The expression on his face said that he was hiding something.

But what?

He looked away first. “You shouldn’t be here.”

I walked over anyway.

Up close the damage was worse. Swelling along his jaw. Blood. Hands bruised. I lifted my fingers and touched the cut at the edge of his mouth before I could stop myself.

His eyes went wide.

He had not expected it. He wasn’t the only one.

Why was I touching him? Was I so desperate to be near him again? He made it clear that he was in love with another woman and yet here I was playing nurse.

For a second he let me touch him.

Then his hand closed around my wrist and stopped me.

He still held my heart, a secret Grayson would never know he possessed. I never intended to tell him because I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Why put myself through that pain? Showing him my feelings only to have him shatter my heart again and remind me he was only ever going to have eyes for his childhood sweetheart. I simply couldn’t go there; it would be too much to bear.

Despite what I already knew, I was still here, touching his face like I had the right.

“Blair,” he said again, quieter.

The corridor door banged open.

“Shaw!” The coach’s voice echoed.

I winced.

He was angry. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him use that tone before.

“What the hell was that? This is a charity cup, not a parking lot, and you just put a man on a stretcher in front of an entire crowd with some of them being kids!”

I pulled my hand free.

This was not a conversation Grayson would want me in the middle of. I did not want to stay for this.

I stepped back, and quietly excused myself before the shouting could get louder.

In the hall, Olivia was waiting, eyes wide.

“Well?” she whispered.

I shook my head once and kept walking, because if I opened my mouth I was going to say the truth out loud.

I was deeply in love with Grayson Shaw. Still, despite everything. These weeks away from him have only

made it clearer. I loved him. I loved him so much. And I wasn’t sure how to pretend I didn’t.

I closed my eyes to hide the tears. He had looked at me like whatever we once shared, was over. For good.
