I stared at the articles on the screen. Paparazzi didn’t miss a single thing. It was like they were following Blair’s every step. I didn’t have to keep track on her, all I had to do was open my phone and there it was. Hundreds of articles about her every move.

I could see pictures of her and Olivia at the hospital entrance. Same coat she had worn at the Charity Cup. Same clothes. Timestamped after the game. The same building they had taken Holt to in an ambulance.

Lily had been the one to put the laptop in front of me.

“There it is,” she said. “Your confirmation.”

I felt sick.

She had touched my bruises like she was there for me. Asked why I was still fighting him. And then she had gone to the hospital to check on him.

Was that why she’d asked me that question? Why I was still fighting him? Did she want to ask me to stop hurting him?

How could I have been so stupid?

She had been worried about him.

She had come rushing earlier to see him, not me.

I dragged a hand down my face. Not sure how to deal with these new emotions.

Why was Blair allowing Chase back into her life after the horrible way he treated her? Did she already forget about all the things he’d done?

“It’s obvious they’re back together,” Lily continued, watching my face. “They’re just trying to keep it off the main cameras. He is still married to Sophie and stringing her along. But he really wants to get back with Blair. He is clearly waiting for the right opportunity to divorce Sophie before announcing his relationship with her. She left the arena and went to him. After you beat him up. And why exactly is it that you started a fight with Chase again? It’s because of her, right?”

“Can you drop it?” I asked her. “I am tired of this. I had a long week. I just want to rest.”

It was a lie. I wanted her to leave so that I could do more research on this hospital visit. I was driving myself crazy over this entire thing.

She folded her arms. “When are you going to marry me and finally put your feelings for Blair behind you? It’s been almost three weeks. I’m not sure. I’ve lost count. I just want you to forget about her now. It’s pathetic. She doesn’t want you. She wants Chase. When are you going to let her be?”

I could not answer her.

Marrying Lily had once been the plan but that plan changed when I fell for Blair. And even though she was clearly trying to get back with her ex-boyfriend, I still couldn’t imagine marrying someone else.

Lily didn’t know the truth. No one did. That I had not signed the divorce papers because signing them made the empty house permanent, and some coward part of me was not ready for permanent. It wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Blair for good.

I did not tell her that.

“I need more time,” I said.

Lily rolled her eyes. “Time is running out.”

She turned, and I knew what she was going to look at before she did. The wall in the hallway off the living room. The framed shots from the wedding and the first home game, the ones the publicist had sent over when the marriage still needed to look real.

Not only that. The ones from our honeymoon. There were photos of Blair all over the house and I’d refused to take them down. It’s not the first time she’s pointed them out to me. It bothered her every time she came to the house.

She pointed at then again. Making me stare at them. Unable to stop gazing at my beautiful wife. The same wife I’d asked for a divorce from.

“Why haven’t you removed those yet? You said you were taking them down a week ago.”

I swallowed hard.

The truth was that I did not want to.

The frames were still there because I walked past them at night like an idiot. During the day when I was home also. Because taking them down would be the same as putting my name on the papers.

Because some part of me still looked at Blair’s face on that wall and wanted to believe she wanted me…not Chase.

“Grayson.”

I did not answer.

Lily stared at me for a long second, waiting for an answer I would not give her. Then she made a short, disgusted sound and grabbed her bag.

“You can sit here and stare at a woman who ran to the hospital to check on her cheating ex-boyfriend who is currently married,” she said. “But I’m not going to do it with you. Call me when you’re ready to discuss the wedding.”

She stormed out.

I groaned and leaned back, eyes on the ceiling, jaw locked. This was getting worse as the days went by. This empty feeling.

I could not believe she had gone to see Chase in the hospital.

The articles on the screen kept refreshing under other people’s captions.

Monroe visits Holt after Charity Cup fight. Grayson’s ex-wife comforts rival captain.

Ex-wife? They simply assumed. There was no proof that we had divorced.

I dragged a hand down my face and tasted blood.

Fuck.

I was bleeding again.

I looked at the wall.

Blair laughing in a photograph I had promised to take down and never touched.

I left the pictures where they were.

I left the papers unsigned.

And I sat on the floor of my own hallway like a man who had lost everything.

I did not think asking Blair for a divorce would have left me completely ruined like this. I could not go a single hour without thinking about her.
