I could not fucking believe it.

Blair was pregnant.

Pregnant? How the fuck could she have possibly gotten pregnant? It hasn’t even been that long since the breakup. First she got married, then pregnant? She was not slowing down and it was driving me crazy.

And she would not tell me who the father was even though I already knew.

She had not slept with me. I knew she had with Grayson. Blair was not the type to sleep around. She had wanted to wait until marriage. That had been the line for six years. Which meant that if she had finally crossed it, she had crossed it as his wife.

He was the father.

No doubt.

I felt sick. I felt like I was about to lose my grip on her completely, and I could not let that happen. I could not let Grayson slip back into her life. Not after everything I had done to pry him out of it.

And a baby would definitely drag him back. It would keep them joined for the rest of their lives.

Unless I got there first.

Before the news about her pregnancy spread, I was going to make him believe I was the father. I would do everything in my power to keep him away from her.

I would let him think she’d had sex with me the day she signed the divorce papers.

The door opened then, while I was in the middle of my plotting.

Sophie stepped in, took one look at me in the bed, and rolled her eyes. This was usually how she greeted me now. There was no longer the spark or joy when I first fell for her.

“You invited her here,” she said.

“What?”

“Blair.” She dropped her bag on the chair with a sharp little sound. “Do not play stupid. There are photos of her walking into this hospital in the same outfit from the game. You were already here. She came here. That is not a coincidence, Chase. You allowed your ex into this building while I was downstairs dealing with your coach and a media mess. All because you got into another fight because of her.”

“I didn’t invite her.”

“Sure.”

“I didn’t.” I growled. “I didn’t even know she was in the building until I saw her in the hall.”

Sophie laughed once, sharp and humorless. “You just happened to get out of bed, wander the halls, and run into her. After you got beaten unconscious by her ex-husband. After you kissed her in a park. After every article this month has had her name next to yours. Forgive me if I am not moved by the coincidence.”

“She was here for herself.”

“For you.” Sophie stepped closer to the bed. “That is what it looks like. That is what it will keep looking like if you do not shut it down. I am not spending another week as the wife who cannot keep her husband away from a Monroe.”

“Watch your mouth.”

Her eyes flashed. “No. You watch yours. You are in a hospital because you could not keep your pride on the ice and you still have enough energy to defend her. Do you understand how that sounds? She’s the reason all of this shit keeps happening to you and still you keep running after her like a lost pup!”

She did not know about the baby. She could not know. If she knew, she would use it, twist it, turn it into another threat about her father and my spot. The pregnancy was leverage I intended to point at Grayson, not a weapon I was handing my wife.

“I didn’t ask her to come,” I said again.

“Then why was she here?”

“I don’t know.”

“You always know when it comes to her.” Sophie folded her arms. “You looked her up for weeks. You met her in diners. You kissed her in public. Now she shows up at your hospital and you expect me to believe you are shocked that she did.”

“I was unconscious for a long time. When would I have gotten the time to ask her to come here?”

Sophie leaned down, voice low. “If you think you can crawl back to her while I stand outside this room smiling for cameras, you have lost your mind. I already told you what happens if you cheat.”

“I saw her,” I said. “That is all. She did not come into this room. She did not sit at this bed. You do not have anything to worry about. I told you that already. Can you drop the topic now? Instead of coming here to look after me, you’re speaking nonsense that didn’t even happen.”

Sophie studied my face like she was looking for the lie.

“Stay away from her,” she said. “I mean it. If another picture of the two of you in this building hits my phone, I will make the rest of your recovery the least of your problems.”

She picked up her bag and left without asking if I needed anything.

The door shut.

I let my head fall back against the pillow, jaw aching.

Blair was pregnant. I still couldn’t fucking believe it. I never should have let her go.

No matter what, I could not let Grayson find out the truth.

If he believed the child was mine, he would stay gone. He would let her go, move on. That’s all I needed. For him to believe the baby was mine.

Blair would have one less reason to run back to him.

I stared at the ceiling and started putting the lie together, piece by ugly piece.

I smiled. Once I got through with this plan, Blair would be mine again.
