Grayson had been attempting to contact me since yesterday. I had been intentionally avoiding him, especially after the recent bombardment of articles featuring him and his childhood sweetheart. If he truly wanted to reconcile with her, why was he reaching out to me? Was it because he’d seen me break down and cry that day? But then, why wait so long to get in touch? Perhaps it was related to the divorce-maybe it had finally been finalized after months of legal proceedings. I wasn’t certain, but I knew I was too overwhelmed by the failure of our marriage to answer any of his calls or messages.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to come in with you?” Olivia asked me.

She had several crucial meetings scheduled for the day that required her full attention. I was careful not to disturb her during this busy time.

“It’s fine,” I assured her gently. “As soon as the appointment concludes, I will send you videos and photos.”

“I hate missing your appointments,” she sighed deeply, a hint of frustration in her voice. “Especially since you don’t have someone in there with you. Grayson should be there.”

I rolled my eyes, responding dryly, “Grayson is too busy dating little Miss Perfect to care about this.”

She smiled softly, reminding me, “don’t forget to send the videos.”

I nodded in acknowledgment, opened the car door carefully, and stepped out before heading inside the hospital building.

I saw him before I reached the desk.

I froze.

What was he doing here unexpectedly? Did he come seeking someone else, or was he here because I had been ignoring all of his calls? I didn’t just ignore his calls-he had also tried pulling up at the house, but I refused to let him in. I instructed the security to tell him I wasn’t home and that I wouldn’t be back until next week.

Now here he was, standing inside the hospital like he had every right to be there, hands in his jacket pockets. jaw locked, the ultrasound corridor stretching behind him. I could not let him anywhere near the doctor’s office. I couldn’t let him find out this baby was his. Not right now.

For a second I thought I had imagined it. I thought he wasn’t truly here and my body was imagining things. Then a nurse passed him, said Mr. Shaw, and the floor felt like it was moving.

He ignored her entirely, his gaze fixed intently on me with a penetrating, almost confrontational stare. The intensity of his eyes was undeniable, and it made my muscles tense involuntarily, anchoring me firmly to the spot. I knew this was dangerous; I had to steady my racing heart. I should not be allowing myself to feel this way for him, especially after everything he had done to me.

I frowned. “What are you doing here?”

He pushed off the wall. “Tell me the truth.”

“What truth?”

I held my breath. Did he somehow find out? He knew about the pregnancy for some time now. But did he now realize the baby was indeed his? I did not want to deal with this today.

“Is the baby mine?”

My heart started racing.

I tried to play it off.

I rolled my eyes and walked past him.

Of course. Of course that was the question. Not how are you. Not I should not have kissed her in front of you. Not I handed you divorce papers the morning after I took your virginity and I’m sorry for hurting you like that. Not, I never should have trusted those stupid articles. None of those things. And he just expected me to answer him like things were fine between us.

“Blair.”

I kept walking toward check-in.

He followed. “Tell me the truth. I have seen the ultrasound. The date on it is the night of the blackout. Not the night Chase claims you slept with him.”

I froze.

Then I spun around so fast I almost fell.

What? Surely I hadn’t heard that correctly. Was that what Chase had told him? That the baby was his?

“Chase told you that?” The words came out too sharp. “That we slept together?”

Grayson nodded. I could see the hesitation in his gaze. Like he was trying to figure out how much of it was

true.

“And you believed him?”

“Yes.”

For a moment I could only stare at him. He’d said it without a second thought. I couldn’t believe he would actually take Chase’s word for it.

“You believed him,” I repeated.

“He said you went to him the same day you signed the papers.” He said. “No protection. All night. That you brought him to the ultrasound. That’s why you came to the hospital he was in that day I beat him unconscious. His words.”

“And that made sense to you.”

His silence was an answer.

I took a step closer, close enough to keep it between us. “I waited six years, Grayson. Six. I did not give that part of myself to Chase when he asked. I did not give it to him when he got angry. I did not give it to him the night I found out he married someone else. But for you. I did. I gave you my virginity. When you asked to consummate our marriage, I gave it to you. And still, you believed him. Chase who has lied to you already.

Color hit his face. “The pictures-”

“Can we forget about the pictures.” My voice shook and I hated it. “You did not ask me what happened that day at the park, you saw the pictures and immediately asked for a divorce. That’s what happened. You never considered that I didn’t want him to kiss me that day. You never asked.”

A nurse at the desk cleared her throat politely. I did not look away from him.

“You asked for a divorce the morning after we had a special night, the morning after I gave you my virginity,” I reminded him, unable to hide the hurt from my voice. “You told me you loved her. You needed me to sign so you could be with who you truly wanted. I signed. I left. This is where you got it all wrong. I did not go to Chase. I went home to my family and threw up for weeks and took a test because my sister realized something was wrong and I’d missed my period. Found out I was pregnant…and yes, for you. Not for Chase. Because I have not slept with Chase not once. You’re the only person I’ve ever slept with. That one time. Which is ironic that I got pregnant on that same day. Then I came here after the charity cup because I was in pain and I needed to know our baby was okay. Chase overheard a doctor in a hallway. And he must have decided to cause more problems between us by telling you that the baby was his.”

Grayson looked like he had been hit by a truck. I’d never seen that broken look on his face before.

I took a deep breath, “in case you haven’t noticed, Chase wants me back and have been trying really hard to get me. He obviously told you that to keep you away. And clearly, it worked. Because you seem to believe anything that comes out your rival’s mouth.”

“Blair-”

“Do not.” I held up a hand. “You spoke to me about pregnancy hormones. You did not ask me whose baby it was then. You already thought you knew. Chase told you a story and you bought it because it was easier than admitting you made a mistake by asking for a divorce.”

His eyes dropped, just once, to my stomach.

There was the faintest curve now.

“I saw the date,” he said. “That is why I am here.”

“You saw the date after you already believed him.” I let out a breath that hurt.

“Congratulations for finally realizing I’m carrying your baby and not his.”

He flinched.

My name was called from the doorway.

I stepped around him again. This time he did not grab my arm. He just said, more quietly, “It is mine. My baby.”

Not a question anymore.

I paused with my hand on the clinic door.

“Yes,” I said, without looking back. “It has only ever been yours. I have not slept with anyone else. I did not sleep with Chase the night I left you. I have not slept with Chase at all. It’s up to you if you want to believe the girl who was a virgin when she married you or the rival that loves to see you in pain.”

I didn’t understand why it was so difficult for him to believe.

I went through the door.

Behind me I heard him say my name again.

I did not stop.

The nurse took my file. I sat on the exam table with paper crinkling under me and my pulse racing.

Olivia would lose her mind when I told her he had shown up.

I stared at the ceiling and pressed my fingers to my side.

He knew now.

He knew it was his.

The doctor knocked.

I wiped my face before I said come in.

This day was not going the way I planned…
