I stood in the hallway after the door shut and tried to make my brain catch up.

I could not believe I had fucking believed Chase.

The motherfucker had looked me in the eye at a party and created a night that never happened. He had lied straight to my face. To my fucking face? Told me Blair was carrying his child. His child? And she hadn’t even slept with him?

All this time, it was my baby? MY BABY?

He had told me Blair left my house and went straight into his bed. No protection. All night. He said it was his baby. That she wanted him there for the ultrasound appointment.

And I had believed it because the park photo hurt and the hospital photos looked like proof and I had been too much of a coward to ask her. I chose to believe Chase. I could have asked her. I could have done my own research. Just like I chose to do yesterday.

And the photos from the park? She made it sound like I’d mistaken those as well.

How much had Chase lied about? How much had the sites that posted those pictures and articles lied?

She was right, I’d chosen to believe my fucking rival. And I knew he was out for me. I knew he wanted Blair back. I knew how desperate he was to have her again. Even though he didn’t deserve her.

Clearly, I didn’t deserve her either. She’d said it herself. She’d chosen to give me her virginity and I’d served her divorce papers the day after.

Fuck.

What was wrong with me?

“Fucking Chase.”

He had known she was pregnant with my child.

He had used that knowledge against me.

He had made me believe my wife had gotten pregnant by her ex.

I hated him. Hated Chase even more than I did before. But, I hated myself even more for believing him and letting his words and actions take Blair away from me.

I was still the only one she had ever slept with.

And now she was in another ultrasound appointment without me. I’d already missed so many of them.

What was I doing standing here?

I went through the door without bothering to knock. Worried she would lock me out.

The nurse started to protest. I did not stop. “I’m her husband.”

Blair was already on the table, sheet over her lap, the doctor turning toward the interruption. Blair’s eyes narrowed the second she saw me. I winced at the look she gave me.

“Grayson.”

“I’m staying.”

The doctor looked at Blair, not at me.

Professional. Waiting.

Blair held my gaze for a long, furious second.

Then she looked back at the ceiling and said, tightly, “He’s the father. He can stay.”

I took the chair beside the table before she could change her mind. My hands were unsteady. The screen was dark until the doctor moved the probe and the image bloomed into view.

I had seen the still image on my kitchen counter.

This was different.

This was moving.

A small, insistent flicker.

Then the sound.

A fast, living rhythm filled the room, too quick to be hers.

My throat closed.

That was my baby.

Mine and Blair’s.

I could not believe it. My baby’s heartbeat.

Tears formed at the corners of my eyes before I could stop them.

I blinked hard and failed. One slipped anyway. I did not wipe it. I was afraid if I moved I would miss a second of the screen.

“Strong heartbeat,” the doctor said. “Growth is consistent with the weeks. Everything looks as it should.”

Blair’s profile was still, mouth set, but her hand had curled in the paper sheet. I wanted to take it.

I did not. She had let me in the room. That was already more than I had earned.

The sound kept going.

I had sat four games for putting Holt on a stretcher. I should have done it again for the lie. I should have driven past her security when I saw the date on the report instead of waiting for this appointment like a man who still needed permission to see his baby.

Why was she even allowing me in here? I didn’t deserve to see our precious baby after the way I’d treated her.

“That’s-” My voice broke and I had to start again. “That’s our baby.”

Blair did not look at me.

“Yes,” she said.

The doctor printed images. Wiped the gel. Spoke about vitamins and the next visit and warning signs I only half heard because the heartbeat was still echoing in my head. When she left us with a moment, the room felt

too small.

“I believed him,” I said. “I thought he was telling the truth, Blair.”

“I know.”.

“I should not have.”

Blair sat up slowly, pulling her shirt down over the faint curve I had only just been allowed to understand. “You should not have asked for a divorce the morning after either. You should not have kissed that woman in front of me. You should not have needed a hospital file to realize Chase was lying.” Her eyes were teary now too, but angry as well. “You being here today does not erase the weeks you spent treating me like I had gone back to him. Treating me like an outsider. You divorced me based on articles and words out of your rival’s mouth. I cannot simply forget what you’ve done.”

“Blair,” I whispered. “We are still married.”
