Enzo had not left his chambers since the day he was wounded during the attack on the kingdom of Cosset. The physical wound was still healing, but it was a different kind of pain that tormented him now — the gnawing, relentless fear of his own sister. Cira was like a hyena circling her wounded prey, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Enzo knew her nature all too well. Every creak of the palace floors, every distant footstep, every sudden silence made his body tense and his hand instinctively close around the hilt of the sword he always kept tied to his waist. Sleep refused to visit him, because in the darkness of his own room, he could almost feel the shadow of her betrayal creeping closer.

Then, the knock came.

Before he could even steady his racing heart, he heard her voice — sweet, mocking, and sharp as a knife — through the door.

"Enzo, I'm Cira. Can I come in?"

His entire body stiffened. His fingers curled around the sword. He did not want to open that door. Every instinct screamed that this was a trap, that his sister had finally chosen her moment to finish what she had started long ago. Still, he forced his voice to remain steady.

"What do you want?"

Cira, of course, did not wait for permission. She pushed the door open, and the smile on her face was nothing short of venomous.

"Don't think I came here because I'm worried about you. Our father sent me to fetch you."

"For what?"

"I don't know, and I didn't ask. I'm only following his orders. So come along... or do you want me to tell him you refused?"

Enzo narrowed his eyes. How could he trust her? How could he know this wasn't a carefully laid trap meant to lead him to his death? He demanded answers, and Cira responded with the same infuriating calm: "Believe me or not, that's your decision. I only do what I've been told."

But one thing puzzled him even more. Why had no servant come to summon him? Why would Cira, his treacherous sister, lower herself to playing errand girl? Her answer came with a sly, knowing look that made his blood run cold.

"Because where I'm taking you, only the royal family is allowed to enter."

Enzo understood immediately. There was only one place in the entire kingdom of Laios that matched that description: the Venobich. A forbidden, ancient, and terrifying place that even the bravest in the palace whispered about in fear. He had no way of verifying her words. If he refused, he would be disobeying his father, and that alone could doom his claim to the throne. His instincts begged him to turn away, to ignore the trap, but the weight of duty and ambition pressed down on him hard. With a heavy heart, Enzo followed his sister.

As they walked through the cold, twisting corridors of the palace, Cira threw a smug remark over her shoulder.

"I knew you weren't so stupid as to disobey our father. Come on, you don't want to keep him waiting. You know how little patience he has."

Every step felt like walking deeper into a web. Enzo stayed a few paces behind her, his eyes fixed on her back, his mind filled with dark thoughts. He was terrified of turning his back on her, terrified that at any moment she might whirl around and sink a blade into his flesh. The journey led them to the deepest, darkest part of the palace, until they stopped before a massive black door, locked and foreboding.

"The door is closed. How do you plan to open it?" Enzo asked, his voice tight.

Cira pulled out a key hanging from a chain around her neck, and an irritating smile touched her lips.

"With the key, of course."

Enzo frowned in disbelief. "Where did you get that? Only our father is supposed to have the key to this door."

"That was true until yesterday. Father decided to entrust it to me."

"Why would he trust something so important to you?" Enzo demanded, his suspicion growing with every word.

"Maybe because Father considers me his true heir."

"I am the heir!" Enzo snapped, his voice rising. "I am the next king of Laios!"

"If you're so sure, why are you so upset?" Cira taunted as she slid the key into the lock. "Are you afraid it might not turn out that way?"

"What nonsense. I am the eldest. The throne is mine."

"I wouldn't be so sure. Our older sister was cast aside as heir once. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens to you."

Enzo was about to unleash a furious retort when Cira pushed the door open. A wave of cold air crashed over them, carrying with it the scent of damp stone and ancient decay. Beyond the threshold, the darkness was so thick and so deep it seemed almost alive — an ink so black it swallowed all hope of light. Both of them felt an involuntary shiver run down their spines, but neither would admit that the place terrified them.

Cira, desperate to appear brave, stepped forward first. A flicker of fire danced in her palm, casting a feeble glow against the suffocating shadows. Before them stood a spiral staircase, descending endlessly into the unknown. Enzo hesitated at the threshold, and of course, Cira noticed.

"What's wrong, brother? Don't tell me you're scared."

"Of course not. Walk."

They descended together, their footsteps echoing against unseen walls. The deeper they went, the heavier the air became, pressing down on them like a physical force. At the bottom, the darkness seemed to pulse — as if something in the shadows was silently watching them, waiting.

"You said our father was here," Enzo said, his sword hand twitching. "I don't see him anywhere."

"I only followed his orders. I know nothing more than you do."

They pressed on. Enzo summoned a flame in his own hand, but the fire seemed useless here; the darkness did not shrink away. It only thickened, mocking them. Then, a sound — sharp and scratching — echoed from somewhere ahead. The sound of claws dragging across the ground.

"Did you hear that?" Enzo whispered.

"As if I were deaf," Cira muttered.

Enzo drew his sword in one swift motion and dropped into a defensive stance. Cira, too, pulled out two daggers from her waist, and her voice turned cold and fierce.

"You'd better not attack me, or I swear you won't leave this place alive."

"I'm not stupid enough to attack you in this situation."

Cira hurled a ball of fire into the darkness, illuminating a horrifying shape. A grotesque creature, something born of nightmare, with jagged sharp claws and a mouth full of gleaming teeth, charged straight at them.

"I think we should get out of here!" Enzo shouted.

"Didn't you say our father sent us here?" Cira shot back.

"Do you see him anywhere?! I suggest we leave before we both end up dead and neither of us gets the throne!"

But it was already too late. The creature lunged at Cira with terrifying speed, slamming her to the ground. She screamed, using her daggers to hold the monstrous jaws at bay, her arms trembling under the beast's weight. Desperation cracked her voice as she cried out.

"Enzo! Help me!"

Enzo froze. Every bitter memory, every whispered threat, every moment of hatred between them flashed through his mind. Why should he save the woman who wanted him dead? Why shouldn't he let the monster finish what she herself had planned for him? But even as the dark thought took root, he could not do it. He couldn't stand there and watch her die.

With a roar, Enzo rushed forward. He channeled his flames into his sword, turning it into a blazing blade of fire, and swung with all his might. The creature's head was severed in a single, scorching blow. The body collapsed, twitching, before dissolving into the shadows.

Cira scrambled backward, shaking nearly uncontrollably. She stared at her brother with wide, uncertain eyes.

"Enzo... I didn't think you would save me."

"The truth is... I didn't either." Enzo extended his hand to her. "Come on. Let's go before more of those things show up."

Cira took his hand, and together they hurried toward the spiral staircase. Enzo led the way, his sword still burning. Cira followed close behind. They had climbed only two steps when something cold and powerful seized Cira's leg and yanked her backward with brutal force.

"Enzo!" she screamed, grabbing desperately at his hand.

Enzo was nearly pulled down with her, but he grabbed the railing, his muscles straining as he fought to hold onto his sister. The darkness below seemed to rise like living smoke, swallowing her whole. He pulled, he struggled, he shouted her name — but the shadows were merciless. Inch by inch, she was torn from his grip.

Cira's scream echoed into the void.

And then, she was gone, devoured completely by the darkness.

Enzo stood at the edge of the spiral staircase, staring into the bottomless black, his hand still outstretched where his sister had been a moment before. His breath came in ragged gasps. His heart pounded in his chest. He had just saved her life. But in the end, he had lost her to a darkness far more terrible than any enemy he had ever faced.

What had his sister lured him into? What monstrous secret did the Venobich hold? And what had truly happened to Cira?

The questions hung in the air like the cold of that cursed place, unanswered and haunting.

What a chapter! I can't lie — my heart was racing the entire time. This chapter was a masterclass in tension and atmosphere. The relationship between Enzo and Cira is so beautifully toxic: siblings who hate each other yet are bound by blood and duty. Enzo's internal conflict when deciding whether to save his sister was so real, so painfully human. And then the twist — just when you think she survives, the darkness swallows her in the most horrifying way. It's chilling, thrilling, and emotionally devastating all at once. The eerie setting of the Venobich, the thick living darkness, the monstrous creature, and the constant fear of betrayal created a perfect storm of suspense. I loved every terrifying second of it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rating: 4.8 / 5 Stars

As for what happens next? I predict that Enzo will have to face the terrifying truth of what happened to Cira — and that she may not be dead at all. The darkness seemed almost intelligent, almost deliberate. Maybe Cira's so-called "trap" was never meant for Enzo, but for herself, or perhaps their father has been hiding something far darker beneath the palace. I also suspect that Enzo will be blamed for her disappearance, and his enemies will use it to strip him of his claim to the throne. A storm is coming — and no one is safe.
